Colin Farrell came across like a small queen rather than a big king in that movie.

Still quite a bit better than 300 though. Which isn't saying much of course. I can't believe so many people liked that movie...

i did not like either one...Sin City was more accurate of urban life than 300 of spartan/athenian and persian war

I did like it, and not because of the historical facts.. I'm a Frank Miller fan, and I think it was a good attempt to make a graphic novel-movie style..

I don't dispute the style - but that the subject material was full of blatant racism.

Leaving aside the historical accuracy entirely - I don't think its at all coincidental that the Greeks are shown to be perfect human specimens with straight backs, washboard stomachs and big muscles while the persians are barely recognisable as human, and the Greek who betrays the Spartans is a stunted, hunchbacked dwarf.

Its pretty easy to see what was being said there...

Homer took historical liberties too - but Troy was a $hit movie that gutted that particular story (only bit I liked was the duel between Hector and Achilles).

Other big offenders were Gladiator (whole list of accuracy problems with that) and King Arthur (supposedly based on "historical documents").

Also, Spartacus--which is based cent-percent on Howard Fast's (communist) propaganda novel which put a proletarian spin on the rebellion he led against the Roman Republic (plus a slough of other historical inaccuracies even without that spin).

Seriously though - I liked Sin City more or less but I have a problem with Miller's politics which pervades his work and which is especially apparent in 300. He was even involved in the production of that movie - so presumably he endorsed the orc soldiers, disfigured lesbians and the fat demon guy with the axes for hands that apparently passed for citizens of the Persian Empire.

Granted the Spartans were the closest thing the Greeks had to totalitarian fascism - but making a movie that plays up an idealised image of them that amounts to Nazi Aryanism is as defamatory to the Ancient Greeks (and their descendants) as the dehumanised Persians were to the Persian historical record and its descendants.

Mel Brooks is a comedian. You can't expect to watch his films and see history played out in a serious manner. His job is to make the audience laugh, so naturally he'll take "liberties" with historical accuracy. The real offenders are those who make so-called "historical dramas" and then change history as they direct the movie.
