STEPHANOPOULOS: What is your position on gay adoption? You told the “New York Times” you were against it, even in cases where the children couldn’t find another home. But then your staff backtracked a bit.

What is your position?

MCCAIN: My position is, it’s not the reason why I’m running for president of the United States. And I think that two parent families are best for America.

STEPHANOPOULOS: Well, what do you mean by that, it’s not the reason you’re running for president of the United States?

MCCAIN: Because I think — well, I think that it’s — it is important for us to emphasize family values. But I think it’s very important that we understand that we have other challenges, too.

I’m running for president of the United States, because I want to help with family values. And I think that family values are important, when we have two parent — families that are of parents that are the traditional family.

STEPHANOPOULOS: But there are several hundred thousand children in the country who don’t have a home. And if a gay couple wants to adopt them, what’s wrong with that?

MCCAIN: I am for the values that two parent families, the traditional family represents.

STEPHANOPOULOS: So, you’re against gay adoption.

MCCAIN: I am for the values and principles that two parent families represent.

He wants to avoid the inclusion of a sound byte. If he came out and said, "I'm against the adoption of children by homosexual couples," his quote would be playing on every news channel across the country and probably used against him by the Obama Campaign. As it is, this interview didn't help him much, but at least he didn't out-and-out say it.

So, by this principal of avoiding adverse press coverage, a presidential candidate is allowed to say nothing while saying something about nothing so long as it doesn't make him look bad? That's reassuring.

Refusing to use the spellchick!

I have put you on ignore. No really, I have, but you are still ruining my enjoyment of this site. .

The Straight Talk Express seems to have found a series of sharp bends in the track (assuming it was ever on the rails in the first place). So let me get this straight:

He neither will answer or will not answer the question in the most basic mode that it requires (yes or no). However he will also neither answer or not answer the question in such a way as to facilitate a broader debate (yes/no but...).

He will however provide a veiled answer that implies his position passively - in the form of a textbook example of political double-speak.

Nice one McCain!

PH, you should know by now that politicians are experts at "saying nothing." ;)

Oh yes, I do understand that and for the most part they are very fluent at it. :P

I don't think this particular incident says very much about the candidate good or bad.

But when we turn to the Hebrew literature, we do not find such jokes about the donkey. Rather the animal is known for its strength and its loyalty to its master (Genesis 49:14; Numbers 22:30).

Nice one McCain!

He is decisive about one thing, being indecisive.
