I know I'm still far far off from arranging the travel for my SO, but today we were talking about taking one of the freighter trips back to the US instead of flying.

Anyone use a K1 visa at a port or have thought about it?

Thanks!

A POE is a POE. No problem.

But the guy at the port might yell to his buddy, "Joe, what am I suposed to do with this brown envelope? I ain't never seen one of these before." I did read of a Canadian who crossed at a very small land crossing and then when they went to do the next steps like Social Security number, etc, they had to track down the envelope because the border people didn't know where they were to send it and it hadn't been forwarded to wherever it's supposed to go. But any POE is a POE and they are supposed to know what to do. However, not being a common thing, it could incur some delays they don't.

Well right now it's just a thought - he prefers to fly but once we get settled into a routine of work, family, etc I don't think we'll have another chance to travel like this again. The POE would most likely be New York City/Bayonne. I'm sure they get tons of ship staff coming and going but I'm guessing not too many K1s [if any!].

I think it would work, but maybe you should research what happens and where the brown envelope goes so if they act vague, he can "coach" them. You know, like say "you are going to send this file on to xxxxx, aren't you? Here's the address if you need it." hahahaha

Good luck!

It can't possibly be an isolated incident. I agree with Pshbrk, a POE is a POE.

Life's just a crazy ride on a run away train

You can't go back for what you've missed

So make it count, hold on tight find a way to make it right

You only get one trip

So make it good, make it last 'cause it all flies by so fast

You only get one trip

I came by ship and came in at New York. I came as IR1 not K1.

The Immigration people did not appear to be used to immigrants coming through the port, as once I stepped up to the desk the officer said to the next desk person, "huh I have an immigrant??"

Between the two of them they got me processed, no secondary inspection either it was all pretty painless for me at least, I dont know about the Immigration Office...lol
