I need some advice on the affidavit form which requires my fiance to provide the number of his cert. of citizenship. Problem is he doesn't have a cert. Hence, i am wondering whether we could use his US passport number as a proof of citizenship instead of applying and waiting to obtain the cert.

Has anyone been through this situation? Some advice would be much appreciated

Thanks!

What did he use for proof of citizenship for the I-129F petition? Use the same evidence.

YMMV

I agree with the previous poster, but you may want to contact the embassy directly with this question. That's kind of scary, your fiance not having their certification of citizenship in hand. Such documents belong in a safety deposit box or a secure safe, with copies kept in a separate location.

I am a US citizen by birth and DO NOT have a number, passport number is NOT what they are looking for.

To file I-129F US citizen provides (A compleate photo copy of passport all pages including cover, OR photo copy of US birth Cert, OR Photo copy of Naturalization Cert)

Yeah, we used his passport as proof of citizenship in the I-129F form. However in the affidavit form they require either the naturalization cert or cert. of citizenship number (ask you have discreetly pointed out). Have you applied for the cert of citizenship? If so, how long did it take? I am going to receive my NOA3 pretty soon hence i am wondering whether it is necessary to wait for the cert. of citizenship.

I also read in a previous posting on this forum dated about a year back that someone used his/her passport number instead of the cert. of citizenship number to fill the affidavit of support form and they passed their interview successfully.

Also, i have emailed my concern to the consulate in Malaysia. Hopefully i get to hear from them soon.

Thanks for your replies everyone! Hope to hear more from everyone.

I'm not sure what certificate you are referring to. A replacement of a Naturalization Certificate comes from the USCIS, takes a long time to get, and is expensive. If a person has a certificate of citizenship in their name because they were born abroad to US citizen parents, it comes from the Dept. of State. It takes less time to get and is less expensive.

It is a certificate of citizenship. He was born abroad to non-US citizen parents. His parents moved to the US and gained citizenship while residing in the US. So i am guessing he gained citizenship through his parents and he became a citizen at the age of 16. I am hoping the application would take about 1-2 months if we apply. Still waiting to hear from the consulate.

You can call the USCIS and ask how long it takes, not that they'll give an accurate answer. It would be nice if his parents happened to have it someplace. Most people have better uses for that chunk of change. I'd certainly get the paperwork in quickly. The form is N-565, and is available on the USCIS website. You have to scroll to the bottom of the forms page to find it. Even if he ends up not needing it for the I-134, he will need it at some point in the future.

The consulate just contacted me saying that it would be necessary to get the cert. of citizenship cause my fiance was not born in the US. However if he were, then he wouldn't need any certification.

Yeah i agree bout the big chunk of change part haha.

Anyway thanks!
