If you book a lap seat or bassinett seat then you might have to pay around 20% of your ticket price, depending on the airline. If you book an extra seat, you pay full price. Lap seats or bassinetts (you will have to ask for a bassinett seat) are for kids up to 2 years but there are weight and lenght restrictions on the bassinett, so you might end up with your child on your lap the entire flight.

I paid about $1000 for my own ticket. When I added my daughter to my seat, they tacked on $300! If the baby is under 20lbs, they should provide a bassinet for you.

I think it's unfair that they charge for your child to seat in your OWN lap on an international flight. They didn't give any special treatment for that extra fee I paid. Absolutely nothing. They're not the ones who had to deal with a crying baby in their lap. They need to explain why we pay for that #######. At least make up a good excuse!

Do make sure you buy a bottle of water before the long flight...because sometimes even if you have a baby needing a bottle, those attendants still take their sweet time responding to the call button.

Rare is the airline that will let an infant fly for free. Most charge around 10%-20% of the adult's fare for a lapchild 0-12 months. After that, it is around 80%, if you get any discount at all. To be honest though, there is no way I would have a lap child above 10 months, particularly for a flight that long.

SAS had a special lap belt. US Airways had no idea what I was talking about at first and then were like...oh, we don't do those.

It's a business for them. Not alot of passengers like to travel with their babies on airplanes as I've noticed during my flights.

It's really your choice if you want to pay or not. If not, then, don't fly. The carrier don't give a rats ####### about your baby!

If your child is older than lets say 8 months or so, I wuoldn't want it on the lap but rather try to get a bassinett for it. You won't be able to strap your child into a seatbelt. There are contraption's like the baby air vest http://www.babybair.com/ but some airlines don't even allow those for takeoff and landing.

The bassinett is right behind those dividing walls in the airplane. http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3088/256201...91703af91_o.jpg It will be attached to the wall as soon as the airplane is all the way up in the air. I was glad my son had a bassinett so I could put him in there every now and then. He was 11 months old when we travelled. Eating while having a baby in your lap is stressful, especially when baby is trying to grab your food.

when we traveled with our then 8 mo. old daughter, they charged us $200. they did offer some bassinett but we refused. on the connecting flight (British Airways) they made her wear a little vest that i was supposed to connect to my belt (which was really uncomfortable, since she wanted to sleep). So, they always charge for international tickets, but domestic flight are free for under 2 y.o.

Baby tickets should be 3x the normal price to discourage parents from travelling with babies.

$1,000 for adults, $3,000 for infants sounds fair.

you should contact the airlines. I'm sure they would love this suggestion!

All airlines should do it at the same time for it to work ;)

My last 8+ hour flight I sat next to a 9 month old baby and she was an absolute delight, as was her mother.

Personally, I think adult passengers should be evaluated for girth, body odor, flatulence, understanding of personal space and general annoyances and pay extra for all areas where they may offend. Could help a number of airlines out of chapter 11.

Okay, that bassinett thing is really cute! it looks like it would make the flight alot easier as well. How much was the difference in price again?

We didn't pay anything for the bassinett, so I booked a lap seat for my son and then asked at the checkin for a bassinett. We were lucky to get one since they are limited. I rebooked my flight back to the US and called the reservation line from Lufthansa, they reserved a bassinett for me for no extra cost.
