I read Lotofpatience fast NVC method the thing I can't find anywhere is the part about the orignals of birthcertificates and marriage certificates. To request such things is crazy on the part of NVC it is much too easy for such important documents to be lost. So anybody know if they will accept certified copies??

NVC will accept certified copies from the respective agency too

So, certified copy of the birth certificate must be from birth registrar office...

You only have one original copy and you are not sending that. Most issuing authorities can issue copy of the original with a fee. What NVC requests is the copy of the original, from the respective issuing authority.

i.e. the birth certificate you have when someone report your birth is the only original birth certificate you will ever have. But, you can get an extract of your birth data on a "long" birth certificate from the issuing authority with a fee.

Here is the problem my wife and her son were born in different cities in Russia they now live in Ukraine it is extremely difficult to get documents from the issuing authority with traveling there to get them and even then it can be difficult. So any thoughts? How about a notary with apostille that says it is a true and complete copy of the original?

It's my understanding that a notary can't vouch for the validity of a document.

Being a devil's advocate, it is very easy to forge documents and the notary has no way to knowing that it is a true and legal copy of a document.

I certainly understand why people do not want to part with original documents. But if there is no way to obtain a certified copy from the office that issued the document, then I don't see any other way. You do get the documents returned at the interview.

For the DS-230 application, I made Xerox copies of all the original documents. I also put each original document into a plastic sheet protector and put the NVC case number in pencil on the document and in marker on the sheet protector. That should help with keeping the documents from getting lost or getting damaged.

I wrote a cover letter for the DS-230 stating what was included in the package and that I have xerox copies of all original documents.

Divi and Bgreed, you CANNOT notarize those documents for NVC purpose.

If you're ok to waste some time, I have a solution, but little risky. Normally, NVC will wait for the checklist (original/true certificed copies from the respective agencies) from you. If you send the wrong one, NVC will issue another checklist. Again, you can respond with wrong ones. After 2 attempts, they will forward your case to the consulate. Then at the consulate interview, officer wil ask the originals that you have. During this ball game, you may lose couple of weeks or months at NVC. But it may be possible.

Caution:- Please do not practise the above method by anybody unless consulted with your attorneys and unless it is REALLY required !

If you review the attached document's (interview letter) last page, you can read:

"You need to submit all the originals to the consulate that were requested by NVC, but were not submitted to NVC"

I don't think NVC really check original/certified copies validity, but the consulate will do. However, those are MANDATORY to NVC checklist.

My concern is not with NVC but rather with the Ukrainian mail service as things can just disappear for no reason. To give you an example My wife sent me a small present for Valentines day it never arrived four months later she was notified that it had come back because the post office didn't charge her enough postage.

In these type cases I think is is truly assinine of NVC to request originals when they have to know how easy it can be for such important documents to become lost.

As long is it is a certified copy issued by the issuing authority is fine. Just cannot be documents certified by public notaries.

Yes but when your literally hindreds of miles from the issuing authority which makes it nearly immpossible to get copies from them. And if the mail loses your only originals then your screwed. They should go back to the old method of bringing the originals to the interview. just too much risk involved this way.
