Hi, we are currently filling out the G-325A for both myself and my partner. For the fathers details on my partners form we are a bit confused on who we put. His real father died just before he was born and his mum re-married when he was 7. His stepdad has no legal guardianship of him and as put by my partner 'just a dude my mom decided to marry.' Do we put his real father or stepfather on the form? I tried searching but didn't come up with much. Thank you.

I would put his real father on the form. Put down deceased.... Hope this helps!

I'd put down whoever is on the birth cert, as they will probably ask to see the birth cert at some stage- most likely the biological dad in this case.

Thanks everyone. We never even thought of the Birth Certificate. It's the simplest things that get you.

Then this may sound like a novel idea to you but here goes. Tell the truth. The biggest danger I see here daily is when people try to overthink things. For the most part, there are no tricky questions. Read the instructions for the forms carefully and interpret them literally, then answer accurately and honestly.

Hey Laura !

My Mother is deceased and I ended up putting that on the form....I appreciate where your coming from though - somethimes you are so desperate to get it right that you look at it from all angles. Please dont ever be put off from asking a questions though, after all that is exactly what this forum is all about - who knows if others are querying the same issue?.

We are here to help each other - and usually you will receive a lot of useful information - however you will have to, from time to time, brush aside pointless sarcastic remarks such as " Then this may sound like a novel idea to you but here goes. Tell the truth".

Good Luck with your visa journey.

I find sarcasm to be an amazingly effective, attention getting communication tool. YMMV.

However...it can be off putting for those who may have second thoughts about seeking help?

That is your most effective communication tool?????? Sad!

Personally I am famous for my sarcasm, but I understand that not everyone has my taste for it, so in the interests of harmony and good manner I refrain from its use.

Perhaps you're one who could benefit from the advise to read carefully and interpret literally. I find that to be my most effective written communication tool. My most effective communication tool is verbal.

The greatest thing about the USA is that we are both free to chose our communication methods along with many other things. Is arguing about how others should communicate a hobby of yours? Do you prefer it to sarcasm?

I worry more about helping people succeed in their visa process than I do about what you brits call "off putting". Call me a crass American if you will but don't ask me for help after doing so.

As this is a forum where text is the media we use - I still insist that sarcasm is not required to communicate information. I also stand by my remark that if you are only able to use sarcasm to communicate - in text forum OR verbal form - it is still sad.

"The greatest thing about the USA is that we are both free to chose our communication methods along with many other things. Is arguing about how others should communicate a hobby of yours? Do you prefer it to sarcasm? "

My intial remarks were to the OP....and to anyone else who happened to be reading your response - My concern is only that others who may wish to ask for help or clarification will not feel comfortable in doing so - that they are opening themselves up for sarcastic retorts which serve no benefit to anyone...especially as the question posed had already been answered by several other posters before you replied. It is of no concern to me that you feel your "right" to communicate in your chosen fashion is under attack.

"I worry more about helping people succeed in their visa process than I do about what you brits call "off putting". Call me a crass American if you will but don't ask me for help after doing so."

Helping people to succeed includes allowing them to ask questions that concern them... regardless wether you think the answer is obvious or not...clearly they dont know for sure - otherwise why would they be asking?

Your bias is really showing with this line ...it has nothing to do with being a "Brit"...it has everything to do with good manners, patience and understanding - which as plenty of people on this forum will tell you are not the reserve of any particular nation rather the good code of conduct that is expected of reasonable people.

Write down his father's name and then DECEASED next to the space allotted for where he is living. My husband's mother is deceased and that is what we did.

Has nothing to do with being American and I resent the fact that it's even implied.

It's called human compassion and it's qutie refreshing to see that most of us do have it. ;)

Changing "most effective" to "only" doesn't strengthen an argument.

"Crass" is not an "American" trait but a American behaving in a crass manner can fairly be called a "crass American". "Off putting" is a brit coloquialism.

I'll do things my way, and ya'll do things yours, OK? I saw the need to get the attention of the OP in order to do more than answer their question but to also change their mindset. Merely asking the question indicates their head is in the wrong place to have success. The intention is not to put them off but to put them on the right track.

People who insert or ignore adjectives in simple sentences have no business criticizing the written communication skills of others, IMO. The words only and most don't appear in my explanation for why I used sarcasm and the word American was preceded by an adjective.

LOL.. please note I didnt use the term "off putting" or "crass" ....you chose those words and you chose to bring nationalities into the debate. In my experience "off putting" and "crass" behaviours are not the reserve of specific nations I have travelled extensively and know these behaviours apply to certain PEOPLE - nothing to do with nationalities.

My point is and remains your sarcasm was neither appropriate or helpful ... it may deter posters from raising any other concerns or questions they may have ...... no matter how you try and defend your manner the point remains the same. If you really think a poster asks a question that you think they should already know the answer to ...why not just leave the thread alone?

Most effective - Only effective? no matter - YOU stated and demonstrated it as your prefered tool to communicate -

" I find sarcasm to be an amazingly effective, attention getting communication tool"

And I beleive you! I really do think you think it is effective.......doesnt make it any less sad.

Clearly we will have to agree to disagree.....lol.... :D
