K1 - 6-9 months from sending in the petition to actually receiving the visa (some faster, some slower)

K3 - about 12 months, again some faster, some slower

Have a look at the timelines. Rather than choosing a visa based on 'speed', we considered some of the following before making a decision:

- Do we prefer being apart before we're married or once we're married?

- If going the K1-route, is it finacially feasible given that it takes a while to get a work permit?

- Do we want to start with the paperwork immediately or wait until we're married?

We opted for the K1 route. However, I'd suggest that every couple discusses the pros and cons of either visa after having all the facts together.

Good luck on your journey, no matter which way you'll go!

if you come here on a K1 you can work immediatly. if you come here on a K3 you have to get a SSN first. imo i dont see ANY good reasons to go with K3 other than i hear the interview is much easier. the k1 is cheaper, faster, and they can work as soon as they get here.

Sorry, but you can't work immediately when you go the K1-route. You'll have to apply for EAD and AOS first (and AP if you want to). That can only be done after you get married.

Another things the OP might want to consider is whether he would like to have the legal wedding ceremony in his country or the US.

Honestly the wait times in Egypt vary tremendously for each case. I have seen some cases on a K-1 take 6months to over 1 year ( as ours did), and on a K-3 i have seen 6months to over 1 1/2 and even longer for either one. I know normally most cases going through Cairo are about 9months to 1 year from start to finish. I wish you both all the best on your journey which ever way you decide and just know if you ever need any help you can join myself and other people going through Egypt in the MiddleEastern/North Africa forum. If i can help you in any way you can always pm me and i will try to help you throughout your process if you need it.

What about those lucky enought to get the ead stamp at port of entry? I know they are not garenteed and not all poes do them but you can work with one of those before you are married until the i 94 runs out can't you?.

Technically, yes. Practically, it's difficult to find an employer who will hire someone with a temporary work permit. So in theory if you enter the U.S. through JFK and are lucky enough to get the EAD stamp (valid until the I-94 expires), you will still have to find an employer, get married and file for AOS, EAD, etc. It's highly unlike that there is no gap between the expiring of the I-94 and receiving the EAD. The bottom line is that a work permit is not included in the K1.

well the K1 visa will take about 6/9 months and the K3 visa will take about a year

but you have to know that every case is different than another .

for example there are so many people who filed for K1 visa in 2006 and they are still waiting....

but at least the K1 visa is faster, easier, cheaper than the K3 visa

Good luck (F)

Nothing's impossible . Nothing's unreachable .When I am weary you make me stronger

This love is beautiful .So unforgettable . I feel no winter cold when we are together .

Will you stand by me ?!!!Hold on and never let me go .

Will you stand by me?!! With you i know i belong . When the story gets told .

When day turns into night .I look into your eyes . I see my future now .All the world and its wonder

This love wont fade away. And through the hardest days . I will never question us .You are the reason my only reason.

I'm blessed to find what i need in a world loosing hope. you are my only believe .

You make things right every time after time.....

Will you stand by me ?!!!

I love you so much and i miss you so much more .

Speaking from experience our K1 took almost 10 months. It is correct that everybody is different as to the amount of time. My husband did get the EAD stamp upon arrival at JFK but wasn't even aware they gave it to him because of where it was placed. Most jobs require a social security number to apply and you have to wait about two weeks after arrival to apply for the social. It took us another two weeks to get it so that is one month off of the 90 day work permit. I agree it would be hard to convince an employer to hire you and then you will have to possibly quiet in a few months.

Weigh the pros and cons....best wishes to you!
