Does this seem legit?

Hi everyone. I'm not looking to hurt anyone's feelings but someone sent me this private message and frankly, i'm not comfortable with it. It just doesn't feel right...any thoughts on how to proceed. I'm all for helping anyone else out all I can but I'm not comfortable giving out personal info like this is requesting. Again, to the person who requested - if you're reading this it's nothing personal but this is the most important thing in the world to me and I won't take any chances with it. Thanks for anyinput, message I was sent is here:

"Hello, I need some help. I also submitted K1 to Nebraska. My Receipt date is 2/16/06 and have yet to be processed. I fear my case file is lost. I went to my congressman's office for help. They said they could do nothing for me because the official processing date listed on the Immigration Dept web page is Feb 13, 2006 which is before my K1 receipt date. They said I would have to show them that at least one person who had a NOA1 Receipt date after Feb 13, 2006 had been processed and had a NOA2 to prove it. Would you be willing to mail me a copy of your NOA1 and NOA2 so I could show them that someone who had filed after FEB 13 had been processed. If I can show them one case they said they would be willing to put in a request to Nebraska to find my missing file. I am worried sick for I am now at 85 days and it seems like recently everyone is being processed in 60 days or so. I would be so grateful if you would be willing to help my out on this. My email is....(I deleted for privacy reasons)"

I'm sorry but I'm really not comfortable with this sort of thing. Am I wrong you guys?

Joey I would be skeptical if I recieved that as well. I don't know what to tell you other than if it was me I don't think I would give that information.

I think it looks legit, and even if it wasnt, what harm could it possibly do to your case?

Thanks - trust me I shred all receipts/statements, etc. I'm fanatical about that stuff and this case number is more important to me than anything in the world. The person didn't say if they'd called NSC and if the check had been cashed etc so I'm not going to give out my info. I feel really bad if I could have helped but you have to be careful, don't you? And this was someone listed as a newbie who I'd never seen on the boards before so don't hate me everyone for saying no! Please?

You never know if something like his NOA could be photo-copied and altered, since the requester does show impatience.

Thanks guys! I feel i've done the right thing. And to the person out there who sent it, I really am very sorry and please stay on the boards and talk to us and let us know what's going on exactly, what steps you've taken. Maybe some of the more seasoned and savvy members will have better advice for you.

If I were you, I would ask for the congressman's address. Then I would look up the contact number of this politician, and call them directly to verify the situation. Once confirmed I would fax/mail the copy to the congressman's office directly. I'm all for helping people and being safe.

YES you are right that this is weird and I would not send anything!!!

If this is legitimate, then the congressman's office is downright stupid to try to tell a petitioner to show them someone else's NOA. If the request is truly on the up and up, then go back to the congressman's office and ask them how on earth you are supposed to go and track down another petitioner and get a copy of their NOA? Then tell the idiot who told you this that it is not YOUR responsibility to prove anything - it's their job as your elected official to help you!!!!

That is a very good point. It's not even the person who wrote me that i'm uncomfortable with (I HOPE YOU KNOW THAT) it's the situation. If that were true we'd being do this for eachother all the time here on VJ I would think. I think their congressman gave them bum information SO I'm going to say try another state senator, etc. and I'm going to ask you guys to give me a hand in giving them suggestions you can think of. The person emailed me back saying they'd cashed the check. I didn't run into this problem so anyone have the next step for them to take? I HOPE HE/SHE is reading this! AND if anyone is comfortable with this whole thing and think you could help the person just send me your contact name and i'd be more than happy to pass it on.

Joey I don't think anyone can fault you for being cautious. You are still trying to help this person and that is the main thing. I wish I had some wisdom for you to offer them.

I would ask if they contacted their Congressman in writing and recieved that response in writing. And if so then move along to their Senator with the written response they have already. I can't imagine that they would ask them to get this information from another person applying that is just unreasonable at least I think it is. Wish them luck in their Visajourney.
