I've never liked guns and would rather not have them in my home nor anywhere near me. However, my husband believes in the right to bear arms and I have learned to respect that right.

In this case, there is clear negligence on the part of the grandmother. If we do make gun laws stricter, it would be to make sure that people get educated about them. But even with education, there is always the question of putting that "education" to good use. Just as there are bad drivers on the road in spite of driving lessons and driving tests, there will always be irresponsible gun owners. Taking away the rights of others just because some people are not responsible is, in my opinion, totally in contradiction to what the United States proudly stands for ... freedom, liberty and justice for all.

Oh dear, I feel a patriotic hymn coming on.... lol

j/k (kind of)

:D:lol:

I get "emotional" and emphatic when people call on treating each other as "kids". .... "You don't know how to play so I'm going to take your toy away". That has always been one of my pet peeves since I moved here. I've often told my husband..."for a country that prides itself of its freedom, its people are so quick at giving their liberties away". I could not understand that especially since I spent 20 of my growing years under a dictatorship where people did not have much liberties to speak of and almost everyone was afraid of the "government".

So yeah.. I hear "America, The Beautiful" whenever I get up on my soap box like that.

"Gun laws should be more strict"...

No... Gun toting grandmothers need to be more diligent. She is 100% at fault.

If the gun laws were more strict, the grandmother wouldn't have a gun in her bag in which the child would still be alive.

Guns don't solve the problem in the USA being a safer place.

where did the article state the child was dead ? link please ....

The girl was rushed to a hospital in critical condition and was recovering Monday afternoon after surgery, said police department spokesman Brick Lewis. Hospital officials would not release her condition after the operation.

She isn't dead, she's in a critical condition. http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20080610/ap_on_...nAy.wCjGPVvzwcF

no, that's not stated in your link.......

"Hospital officials would not release her condition after the operation."

What I find funny though is that some of the same people who will cling to the 2nd Amendment and go on about THEIR RIGHTS (damn it) are the first to say it's okay for the government to dig into personal records, to be monitored by the government, etc. all in the name of "homeland security". It seems contradictory to me.

with guns like say cars there has to be education and responsibility...parents cant leave guns laying around small kids, locks are made for these guns ways to secure them. In a car around small kids would you leave it running, not set the brake, leave them alone etc.....dont we try to teach them dont handle the guns if you should see one and the same dont we say dont run carrying those sissors, or a fork. Each just need take that responsibility for the situations..

I guess the question is whether on a broad level if the availability of firearms makes for a generally safer society. That's far from an easy question to answer - but its probably no coincidence that the US consistently scores the highest rates of gun-related crime than any other western country.

Clearly the deterrent effect, such as it is, only goes so far.

When did I say (and find it in this thread please) that guns should be taken away from RESPONSIBLE, well trained people? If y'all feel the need to hang on to your gun for safety, so be it. I DO wish there were some tighter controls though.

Poor little girl. :(

It's a safety issue, especially with a 4 year old in the house. While I don't think we should legislate every possible safety issue in a home, adults with firearms should be required to have them safely out of reach of children, and face heavy fines, including their right to own firearms when they are negligent.

ban guns! ban guns! ban guns!.... :protest::rolleyes:

 how about prosecute the idiots that allow children to have access to guns & hold people personally accountable for their personal stupidity?

Yes, as sorry as this woman feels, she should get more than just a slap on the wrist.
