Going Stir Crazy

Sweet flaming hamster on a stick, I am goin' out of my mind here.

I have nothing to do. The dishes are washed, the laundry is done, the kitchen is scrubbed, the floors are washed.

The AOS package is as complete as it can be for now, it's only missing the I-864s from my guy (hasn't filled it out yet) and his dad (already in the mail), the cheque for $1010 which can't be made out until Jun 2nd, a copy of my long birth cert which my guy is supposed to do at work today, and the passport photos that can't be taken until tomorrow when my guy has the day off.

I can't unpack my stuff because it's not here yet.

My EI package is safely in the (registered) mail.

The student loans people screwed up my freaking loan arrangements so I am skating a knife-edge here claiming I'm still a resident of Canada, because I paid rent for the month of May and I haven't yet submitted my AOS package requesting residency in the US, my name isn't on the lease here yet, I haven't applied for a SSN number yet, I don't have anything technically tying me to residency in the US yet.

However, that means:

Not on lease = I can't get a key to our apartment to come and go as I choose, stuck inside

Can't apply for SSN = Delayed SSN delays my ability to apply for a driver's license

Delay in submitting AOS = Delay in EAD, EI

And so on.

Bottom line, my life is on hold until the student loan people send their stuff to a friend in Canada in the next 3-5 business days, and then that friend FedExes it down to me as fast as possible so I can sign it and fax it back to Canada. Once they receive it and process it, I'm golden to start establishing my residency in the US.

But overall, I'm just going nuts from feeling like there is nothing to do except WAIT. Wait for my belongings to get here so I can start setting up 'our home' and not just living in 'my guy's apartment'. Wait for the student loan fungola to get resolved so I can get stuff done. Wait for the missing pieces of the AOS. Wait for EI. Wait for things I've ordered online to be sent to me so the stuff sitting in my living room for folks in Canada can be sent up.

Wait until 4:45 to start dinner.

Maybe I can (Oh joy!) scrub the shower stall or dust again.

There is so much to DO and I can't do any of it yet. :girlwerewolf2xn:

Thanks for listening to my rant-- I know you folks have been there.

"Sweet flaming hamster on a stick, I am goin' out of my mind here."

Too funny!

But seriously, stuck inside?! Thats crazy, have your hubby take you to get a key made. You can get it done at Walmart or any hardware store for $3-$4.

I'm not sure I think you can get a SSN. Double check the boards here. I think there is a window of time involved but, you just got here so you should be fine. Just double check. And check the driver's license rules, rather call the DMV. A SSN doesn't = drivers license. Some states you have to have a green card, other a valid visa is fine.

Yeah, this definitely isn't the fun part. But, you'll be fine. Maybe you can get some books, or DVD's to occupy your time. Then there's always the exciting world of daytime tv.

We can't get a key made, it's in the lease that only the landlord can distribute keys, and only lease holders can have a key. I think there may be some fancypants magnetic security thang involved to boot.

Apparently as a K-1 I am allowed to apply for a SSN, and my visa doesn't expire until August.

I don't have a driver's license of any kind yet, as I have a driving phobia (complete with panic attacks when behind the wheel, whee!) which my psychologist hubby is helping me to get over. I'll be makin' like a 16 year old getting their first license. Awww. Once I have my SSN, I can take the written test and get my Driver's Permit and start learning how to turn on a car without hyperventilating.

I'll add (since it won't let me edit)

We don't have TV to speak of because I'm not a TV fan, and I've already devoured all the books in the claim that don't have exciting titles like:"Clinical Neuroscience" (I know, how could I resist such a gripping page-turner ...) , and we made a depressing sweep of the local rental joint where I discovered that everything I'm interested in seeing I've already seen. If he was a fan of 'adult movies' I could maybe watch those and email out some humorous reviews to my girl friends back home, but he's not into that stuff.

I'm afraid to do more housework lest I give the hubby the wrong idea ... :jest:

Ooo, I can start dinner in a half-hour ... next thing you know, I'll be baking muffins in 91 degree heat.

WHAT!! No porn?? What do you see in this guy??? RUN, and run Now!!!!

Canadians Visiting the USA while undergoing the visa process, my free advice:

1) Always tell the TRUTH. never lie to the POE officer

2) Be confident in ur replies

3) keep ur response short and to the point, don't tell ur life story!!

4) look the POE officer in the eye when speaking to them. They are looking for people lieing and have been trained to find them!

5) Pack light! No job resumes with you

6) Bring ties to Canada (letter from employer when ur expected back at work, lease, etc etc)

7) Always be polite, being rude isn't going to get ya anywhere, and could make things worse!!

8) Have a plan in case u do get denied (be polite) It wont harm ur visa application if ur denied, that is if ur polite and didn't lie! Refer to #1

Oh, I remember that time! Hang on - it honestly, really does get better! I know it isn't much but you can always study the Driver's Manual for Texas so you can ace the written part of the test. Also, go to the Library this weekend and get a Library card - use his name if you need to - and get something interesting to read or watch. Find out the local newspaper and read it on line to help acclimatize to some of the local 'flavour'. Any chance of getting a puppy or a kitten to keep you company? (Don't know if I want to trust you with hamsters!) Once your belongings arrive you will feel so much better!

“...Isn't it splendid to think of all the things there are to find out about? It just makes me feel glad to be alive--it's such an interesting world. It wouldn't be half so interesting if we knew all about everything, would it? There'd be no scope for imagination then, would there?”

HAHHAHAHA

My guy just got home and indignantly protests that he 'does watch porn!'.

Maybe it's just that he doesn't leave it lying around ... :hehe:

Kathryn, I am studying up on the test in anticipation of taking the test, but I can only absorb so much at a time ... the library card is something we talked about this morning before he headed off for work.

I'm drinking fresh-squeezed red grapefruit juice ... I am so spoiled. :D

Well, it's either cry, commit acts of moral turpitude, or make smartass comments about the situation. In this Choose Your Own Adventure category, the only option that doesn't lead to depression or deportation is the last one.

And they say that a Scavenger Hunt is a popular choice for romantic gestures, do you think I'll get a prize if I manage to find a copy of 'Lesbian Spank Inferno' in the midst of a stack of old sweaters?

(Bonus points if you caught that reference!)

Tonight I made an almond crusted salmon fillet with sauce made from sesame oil, orange zest, fresh ginger, garlic, and agave syrup, with jasmine rice and steamed spinach flavoured with rice vinegar.

It was supposed to be a toasted sesame seed crust but when I went to toast the sesame seeds they were stale so I minced almonds instead.

No dogs; I'm still recovering from the recent death of the family dog. I hate cats, but I love dogs. I love dogs too much; they deserve all the care a toddler requires and then they die and break your heart.

Plus, we're a young couple and my guy will be working with the military in a few years and having a precious lil poochie to accommodate as we get relocated all over the globe on a regular basis just won't work.

I guess I could go iron socks ...
