Crows are not usually the messengers...now, if an Owl calls your name 3 times and is near your house..then, the grim reaper be along shortly

If you aren't there, does he leave a message?

yes, and the grim reaper delivers it

Cool, I am waiting for my book to come from Amazon. Maybe it was left with the owl.

Peace to All creatures great and small............................................

But when we turn to the Hebrew literature, we do not find such jokes about the donkey. Rather the animal is known for its strength and its loyalty to its master (Genesis 49:14; Numbers 22:30).

Thanks for all the crow info...lol.

I really think it was the Omen that got me seeing them as messengers of evil.......

the other day a HUGE crowe landed on my back fence and stayed and stayed and it was seriously starting to upset me!

I love crows; everything about them...their shiny feathers, the way they seem a bit foreboding, the caw-caw'ing. I used to live overlooking a rooftop where crows would congregate and two other cats I had at the time and I would sit at the window just watching them. We must have looked nutty watching the crows...hehehe Now Sheryl Crow on the other hand....blech...

I'd like to hear an Owl pronounce my name....

I grew up with:

Never put shoes on a table, it causes a fight.

Never look at and compare hands with someone else - causes an argument.

Itching palms means you get money.

eta: Also, if you hear a dog bark for a long time, someone is about to die.

Scary stuff. In wonder why people come up with stuff like that.

I really dont have any. I do the "knock on wood" thing, more as an expression then a belief.

My dad had the friday the 13th superstition. He wouldnt leave the house or do anything where he had to write the date :lol:

No superstitions here! In fact I've been known to chase down black cats so I can cross their path! I saw one in Canada the other night. The slippery little ####### got away!

thought this was interesting...

To medieval scholars the word was applied to and beliefs outside of or in opposition to Christianity; today it is applied to conceptions without foundation in, or in contravention of, scientific and logical knowledge. The earliest English uses of the word in the modern era refer critically to Catholic practices such as censing, rosaries, and other practices that Protestants believed went beyond - or were set up above - beliefs that seemed unfounded or primitive in the light of modern knowledge.

Many extant superstitions are said to have originated during the plagues that swept through Europe. According to legend, during the time of a plague, Saint Gregory I the Great ordered that people say "God bless you" when somebody sneezed, to prevent the spread of the disease.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Superstition

Knocking on wood:

When some of us mention something good that has happened or that we expect to happen, we knock twice on a piece of wood (or some plywood with a thin layer of fake 'wood' or plastic with a wood design, it's hard to tell these days). Why do we do this? Once, in the tides of time, trees were thought to be the homes of the gods. To be granted a favor, a person would nicely ask their diety and touch the bark of the tree (first knock). Then knock once more to signify a polite 'Thank you' (second knock).

Walking under a ladder:

To justify myself doing this, I say it's out of common sense, that it could come toppling down and squishing me. A leaning ladder against a wall (with the floor and the wall) or opened (with the floor) forms a triangle. Once, in tides of time, a triangle was considered with symbol of life; if one walked through a triangle of any kind, you were tempting the fates.

Breaking a mirror:

One's reflection was considered to represent your soul. Breaking your reflection or image, therefore, was harmful to the soul.

Friday the 13th, Fridays, and the number 13:

These superstitions have their origins in Christianity. There were 13 people present at The Last Supper + Judas (the betrayer of Jesus) was the 13th guest + Friday being the day that Christ died = Friday the 13th, the unluckiest day of the calendar!

Black cats

In the Middle Ages, black cats were believed to be the companions of witches, and after seven years of life, the cats was even said to turn INTO witches, or even devils and demons! All of which were to be avoided at all costs.

Don't spill the salt.

Although some people believe that Judas spilt salt during the last supper, this claim can't be proven. Salt was a very precious expensive commodity in the middle ages. It was also used for medicinal purposes. If you spilled any, you must immediately throw it over your left shoulder to strike the nasty spirits in the eye, thus preventing sickness.
