Required Vaccines

My husband was wanting to know if he could go ahead and start getting some of the vaccines (i.e. hep b and tetnaus) or if he should wait to get them at the medical. He's wanting to go ahead and do them now

Does anyone now if it is acceptable to go ahead and get them?

Hi Helen,

I would suggest Dougie doesn't wait. From his own doctor most of the vaccines are free of charge ..... whereas at the medical they are quite extortionately priced.

Plus with his own doctor the vaccine appointments can be set up in a way that he doesn't have to have them all at once.

If he lives in Cornwall, as I do, then he won't be able to get the TB shot as we don't have TB in Cornwall and so they do not provide it anywhere in the county.

I didn't wait, I've had them all but TB and Hep.

He will then need a vaccination certificate or letter from his doctor to say which one's he's had and when to take to the medical in London.

You can download the list of vaccines required from the links I sent you, in there will be the link to the medicals and vaccines will be mentioned. However he won't need this for most of them as the majority of vaccines required are simply the standard ones required in England.

You can also get to the website for the medical in London and there is also a pricelist of how much it will all cost .... trust me, you don't want a bill for vaccines on top of it.

I would personally get as prepared as you can for all steps ASAP to save rushing around and panicking when the time comes.

The England forum should also carry a list of questions for interview .... of which he'll proably get asked 3 of by the looks of it .... the interview in London isn't a big deal apparently. Infact it looks the same as it was when I had mine for my previous greencard 14 years ago.

I'm K-3 but will be starting to get updated on vaccines in a few weeks also, just to have it over with.

I'm confused as to why your GP wouldn't do them for free as the majority of the vaccines are basic requirements for all English people and therefore covered under the NHS and therefore free of charge, i.e. tetanus, polio, measles, mumps, rubella etc.

The only one I've had personal issues with is TB as it's not a necessity in Cornwall like it is in the rest of the UK and therefore impossible to get unless out of the county.

Since vaccinations can begin when you are an infant, of course it is acceptable to get them ahead of time... Simply do what is most convienient or cost effective... It is your choice.

Thanks for the info Sarah, I'll tell him to go ahead and get what he can/what he needs of them. Not sure where Cornwall is or how close he is to there, but he lives in Colburn (close to Darlington). So I'm not sure what he'll be able to get, but he can find that out on his own through his GP. I read on the NVC site that it suggests not to get them ahead of time because he might not need some of them. I figure this is mostly because they want the $$$ for vaccines cos they are fairly expensive on the prices they show (they're not even that expensive over here). I'm not sure on England's vaccine requirements, but going by the requirements over here if they are anything similar he wont need the MMR or Polio or Pertussis (Tetanus, Diptheria and Pertussis are given in one injection called DTaP) as he is too old for them (again thats over here). But surely his GP would be able to determine what he would need and dont based on age and previous vaccines. Tetanus and Diphtheria over here are given as one injection. I read that the varicella vaccine isn't avaliable in the UK, so I'm not sure how that one will work, but he had chickenpox when he was a child. Not sure how the pneumonia vacc would work with him either as over here it is only recommended for those who suffer from it chronically or are 65 and older. I don't know if the general rule for vaccines goes out the window when they are immigration-related.

I had to have Tetnas and Diptheria and MMR. No side affects to speak of.

Just wanted to update:

He got his vaccs yesterday, 6 in total, from his GP, I think all he really needed was mmr & td, but i had him get a few others (hep-a, hep-b, pertussis, flu (i believe he had 2 flu shots), mostly because I work in healthcare and dont want to pass something on to him that I get exposed to from a patient. Anyhow the vaccs were free, he paid 7.99 (pounds) at the pharmacy for the hep-b vacc which he took to the doc for the injection.

Glad he had them done there as the price list for the medical is 35 pounds a piece.

Have to give him credit though, I would have fainted if someone came at me with 6 needles lol. Poor guy had 2 in each arm and 1 in each leg. And is hurting like heck today.

He has his medical April 3rd and the interview is April 24th. *Fingers crossed and praying hard for an approval*
