Yes, it is possible to send a personal cheque. We have used personal cheques all the way through the process, including for the I-751. The cheque was cashed with no problems, and the added benefit is that we can get a copy of both sides of the cashed cheque from our bank. Unfortunately, even though the receipt number is written on the back of the cheque, it can't be used to check online status - the biometrics number is needed for that:-).

Yes, you can send a personal check which is payable to "US Department of Homeland Security."

I-130 Timeline with USCIS:

It took 92 days for I-130 to get approved from the filing date

NVC Process of I-130:

It took 78 days to complete the NVC process

Interview Process at The U.S. Embassy

Interview took 223 days from the I-130 filing date. Immigrant Visa was issued right after the interview

I remember when a few years ago I needed some simple doc from CIS (don't remember already what was it). So, I went to office and they told me-not a problem and amount. I asked if I can pay by check or should I run to make money order. They told me that check is fine. While I waited for the doc to be ready, the other girl had similar situation. They told her that they are not accepting personal checks and she should go to a bank next block to make money order. I was very very surprised.

USCIS always accept a personal check.

They seem to accept personal checks for everything now. I remember a few years back when they suddently stopped doing that; right after send I-765 (EAD) with a check -- it came back pronto.

Glad they resumed that, since it's a lot more difficult tracking whether they "took the money" when using money orders.
