I am currently talking to a lady in Ukraine and was curious about something. I have heard stories that if a individual gets a tourist visa into the US, that it makes getting the K1 more difficult. Is this true? Also, how hard is it to get a tourist visa into the US? I was able to sponsor a Ukrainian to meet me in the UK and although it was difficult, it was not that bad. Thank you for any help.

No the opposite tends to be the case, it is easier to get K-1 than tourist visa. K-1 has immigrant intent, Tourist visa does not, if counselor officer suspects the person is applying for tourist visa with possible intent to stay in the USA, they will deny the tourist visa.

OUR TIME LINE Please do a timeline it helps us all, thanks.

Is now a US Citizen immigration completed Jan 12, 2012.

Out of Ukraine, not impossible but very difficult to get her a tourist visa.

The US does not have a USC "sponsorship" program per se for a tourist visa. So a USC has little or no influence on the issuance of this type of visa.

YMMV

I went almost all the way through a K1, but decided to stop the process. So, basically what I am hearing is that a tourist visa due to lack of immigration intent is very difficult to get. It would be nice for her to come her just to visit and see the difference, but from what I am hearing that is difficult. If we were to get a tourist visa though would it hurt our chances to get a K1?

NO not true, it will make it easier.

Rather hard if coming from former Soviet Union CIS member states, only those that belong to EU have it easy. Basically your friend is going to have to go to the US embassy in Kiev for interview and apply for a tourist visa, which are normally granted for 5 years duration at a time, if your friend is single woman, it is almost highly unlikely they will grant her a tourist visa, it is possible but not something that they do everyday nor something that is easy to get.

Not sure how it works with UK embassy but with USA embassy it is not that easy and not to rain on your parade, but very unlikely or very hard to get a tourist visa for a single woman from Ukraine to come to USA. Does not mean you cannot try, but do not be disappointed if you get turned down flat out, it happens all the time.

Good luck.

Not true. I've had 2 tourist visas prior to our I-129F filing, and a 3rd. tourist visa granted while our K-1 was processing. Each type of visa is granted if the applicant meets the requirements for the specific type of visa he/she is applying for. It would ridiculous if having a B-2 had a negative effect on getting a K-1 in the future!

About your question of how hard it is to get a tourist visa. Anyone who answers to that question is only guessing. Whether if it is hard or not, it will depend on the applicant's conditions.

If she meets the requirements to apply for a B-2, you guys should give it a try..all you'll be risking is the money paid for the visa fee ($131).

That was sorta my understanding of it that although it is possible, it is very difficult to get a tourist visa into the US for Ukrainians or Russians. I wasn't betting on anything, but thought I would ask and see what the possibilities were. So, basically, its just better to wait and do the K1. The UK process was a big hassle, however, we were prepared and had the necessary documents ready, so the visa was granted. I have heard the US tourist visa is very similar though. However, it just gives me more reason to solidify our relationship and start the K1 process.

This is what I was curious about. Someone that has actually tried. If you don't mind can you tell me what "proof", documents, etc.., they required? If not that's cool. I am interested to see if it was like th UK where i had to sponsor her, produce check stubs, bank account balances, state she was only going to be there a week, blah, blah, blah.

Again there is no SPONSORSHIP, so no evidence produced by the USC will mean diddly... The applicant MUST overcome the presumption of intention to immigrate on there own.

Does the applicant have significant "ties" to there home country that because of these "ties" the CO will believe the applicant will return.

Is the applicant employed or unemployed?

If employed, who is the applicant employed with?

Does the applicant have property ownership or not?

Does the applicant have other significant assets that will remain in country (not easily transferred or sold)?

Does the applicant have children who will remain in country?

The questions and possibilities are endless and there is simply no one recipe that guarantees success...

YMMV

fwguy, is right. You can not sponsor a person to come to the U.S. on a tourist visa. You can write a letter inviting her, and saying that she'll stay with you, if you want, the invitation letter is good to prove that she has a reason to visit the U.S. BUT even more important, is her own financial, employment, social and family situation.

The Consulate will presume that every B-2 applicant has intention to stay in the U.S. and it is the applicant's burden to prove other wise. I brought a bunch of documents: employment letter, bank statements, professional I.D., tax declarations, and all our K-1 documents, and my old passports. They did not look at ANY of the documents. The CO asked: Where do you work? What is your monthly income? How long did you stay in the U.S. last time you visited? Then he asked for my expired visa, and that was it.

I suggest you read this information:

WHAT TO EXPECT ON THE DAY OF YOUR VISA INTERVIEW

....An applicant's ties to his or her country as well as his or her purpose of travel will vary from applicant to applicant. It is solely the applicant's responsibility to demonstrate the legitimacy of his or her travel, as well as ties outside the U.S. It is in the interest of the applicant to answer each question on the application and during the visa interview completely, truthfully, and as informatively as possible. We also ask that each applicant feel free to provide additional information that they feel is pertinent to his or her application that may not be asked on the application form or during their visa interview.

An applicant may bring any documents they desire to the visa interview, but documents rarely are a determining factor regarding an applicant's visa eligibility. If someone in the United States wishes to support an applicant's visa application, supporting documents must be sent to the applicant so that he or she may present them in conjunction with his or her visa application. We do not have the resources to store documentation connected to specific applications.

You'll fine the complete info. here: U.S. Embasy in Ukraine
