Can someone please point me in the direction of the documents that have the information on living abroad and how this affects your green card status.

My husband may have the opportunity of working abroad with the USA government and we want to know how this interferes with my legal status in the USA.

You may be found to have abandoned your permanent resident status if you:

* Move to another country intending to live there permanently.

* Remain outside of the US for more than one year without obtaining a reentry permit or returning resident visa. However in determining whether your status has been abandoned any length of absence from the US may be considered, even if it is less than one year.

* Remain outside of the US for more than two years after issuance of a reentry permit without obtaining a returning resident visa. However in determining whether your status has been abandoned any length of absence from the US may be considered, even if it is less than one year.

* Fail to file income tax returns while living outside of the US for any period.

* Declare yourself a “nonimmigrant” on your tax returns.

Well, since he's already a permanent resident, you may want to check on N-470 (http://www.uscis.gov/files/form/N-470instr.pdf) and contact USCIS directlyas well.

If your spouse is a government worker stationed abroad you might be able to actually file for citizenship early!! There are a couple of threads on expedited filing that might be helpful. The time abroad has to be at least a year more than either your filing date or your interview date I can't remember, but I know I searched and found some good info before. The rules are the same for Military spouses and certain US government employees.
