[HEY ALL,

I AM FAIRLY NEW TO THIS SITE. I AM ENLISTING THE HELP OF THE WHOLE COMMUNITY. I HAVE NOTICED THAT PEOPLE HAVE BBEN ASKED ABOUT THEIR WEDDING DATE DURING K-1 VISA INTERVIEWS.

BECAUSE OF THE UNCERTAINTY OF WHEN MY FIANCE WLL ACTUALLY GET HIS VISA AND BE ABLE TO TRAVEL. WE OPTED TO DO A CIVIL CEREMONY AT THE LOCAL COURTHOUSE ONCE HE ARRIVES AND PLAN FOR A BIGGER CEREMONY (LIKE FOR A YEAR LATER). FOR BIGGER CERMONIES YOU HAVE TO MAKE RESERVATIONS VERY FAR IN ADVANCE. WE DID NOT WANT TO MAKE DEPOSITS AND THAN LOSE THEM. I WAS WONDERING HOW OTHER PEOPLE HAVE BEEN MANAGING THIS FRUSTRATING PIECE OF THE PROCESS?

I'm doing exactly what you're doing. We'll have a civil ceremony once he's approved and we're planning a church wedding (I've already talked to my priest and he'll do the full ceremony for us) for May 16th, 2009.

See my timeline for my K-1 and AOS/EAD/AP details.

Before I post this, I must add this disclaimer: don't do what I did. :)

We talked with the owner of the wedding/reception site, and the photograpy/videography team, and told them about our situation. They agreed to work with us and as long as we gave them enough head's up time, we could switch the dates if we had to. fortunately at that time, the consulate we were dealing with was fairly predictable, and we based our date on that. We cut it reeeeaaaallllllllyyyyy close, but got away with it. I don't advise it for anyone, especially with how unpredictable things are now.

We did, however, have the wedding we wanted and it was fabulous :)

The simple answer is don't plan anything. Once you get the visa you have six months to enter the US and then a further three months to get married and file AOS... we didn't realise this at the time and so we planned our wedding, paid for it, booked it...

We ended up having our ceremony without a license so while we had the ceremony it was not legally binding. It was nerve-wracking and complicated and caused a lot of heartache but it worked for us... again - not recommended :P

we're gonna get married at the courthouse ASAP and plan a ceremony and a party with family and friends later

I really couldn't face the stress of the visa process and preparing a wedding with no clue as to when I would get the visa

we also want to be settled down a little before making the ceremony which means having applied to AOS already, found work...

Bottom line is - don't plan anything you can't change!

Yes, they will ask you when you're getting married at the interview, but they won't require you to be specific. They know too well how unpredictable the system is, and won't expect you to have a full-blown wedding planned by interview stage!!

When I was asked at my interview "when do you plan to get married?"

I answered, "pretty much as soon as I arrive, we'll do a courthouse ceremony, and then a large reception later in the year"

Simple as that :)
