Will you be working for an American company engaged in international trade? If so, then it may not count against you.

Nscvet, I work in the entertainment industry, and will be working in Canada for an American production company, & paid through a US payroll company.

My main concern, as I see it, is that I will be in Canada from late July (still an estimate at this stage) till November or so. From all predictions, my interview should be scheduled towards the beginning of the period I will be away - and I will need it to be re-scheduled, hopefully that would take a good few months.

Even if my interview is scheduled before I leave, I then get tied up with when will the oath be - then, if I squeak that in - I am in difficulties with having to apply for a passport - and then, the Canadian work visa will already have been issued with my existing "foreign" passport details.

As it stands at the moment, it's all kinda a mess. I don't know what will happen when I try to reschedule with such a lengthy delay. I know the BCIS can take many months to schedule things - I'm not sure if they will let me do it though LOL. Wha I do know is that financially I'm not turning down five months work - I'd rather have to pay the $675 again if worst comes to worst, and I need to refile.

Any suggestions or comments are welcome.

Did you get your interview appointment yet? Or are you still waiting? Can someone at home check your mail and if it does come in, to open and read it for you? I mean I know where you are coming from, had a job where when my company said to go, I had to go and didn't know whether I would be back in a day or in three months, unforeseen problems so didn't know if I would be back in a day or as long as three months. Had to stay until all the problems were resolved. So worked out a deal with my little sister to open my mail and pay my bills or I could have been evicted when I came home.

If you get that letter from your service office that schedules your interview, can write to your field office to postpone your interview, and having work so you can eat should be a good reason not to attend at their arbitrary date.

With just about anyone else, you mutually agree on an appointment day where the USCIS just says, be there at their convenience like all we have to do is to wait until they decide to call us. You have to have something worked out if you have a home, somebody has to pay those monthly bills that come in like clockwork, so somebody should be there to watch for that interview letter.

Nick,

Thankyou for your replies.

I am still waiting for my interview appointment notification - who knows when it will turn up. Regardless, I will have someone who can check my mail, when it does arrive, I will write and ask to have the appointment rescheduled for after my anticipated return (dec 08). Either this will be accepted, or my application may be denied - if so, I will just reapply when I return.

According to the Los Angeles Times there were so many people going to the Oath Ceremonies on July 11, that they caused a traffic tie-up. An estimated 30,000 to 40,000 people. My question is, where are these people coming from? I know one person who took the Oath that day and her application was handled by the San Bernardino DO, and I think I read on one of the immigration sites about someone from Orange County taking the Oath. I wonder if there were any from LA DO. Out of 30,000 to 40,000 people I would expect at least a couple of them to be on this or other boards. Well maybe those new employees will make a difference. Some time. Some month. Some year.
