Hi all,

I'm a self-employed freelancer and consultant. Been in between insured jobs and uninsured jobs. Anyone know of a way to get economical and individual health insurance in New Jersey? I'm uninsured right now, and I may need a surgery.

Thanks for your help,

hz

I can tell you right away, don't tell any health insurance provider that you're in need of surgery. They'll deny you flat. I know that might seem like lying, but unless you want to pay out of pocket for it, you'll have to learn to either "curb the truth" or "omit" certain details when it comes to health insurance companies.

Even if you don't mention the sugery and you get covered, chances are they won't cover the surgery because its considered a pre-existing condition.

VJ Hours - I am available M-F from 10am - 5pm PST. I will occasionaly put in some OT for a fairly good poo slinging thread or a donut.

Any ideas for individual insurance?

Employer plans are generally required to cover preexisting conditions. Thats also why they are more expensive as a whole, but a good part of the cost is usually covered by the employer.

Its likely the surgery will be considered a pre-existing condition, which individual insurers don't have to cover. You might be able to find one that does, which may or may not be cheaper than paying for surgery out of pocket.

What's a pre-existing condition?

Is a condition considered "pre-existing" if you didn't know about it?

it pre-existed before they found it, and it's not covered. :P

How can they find a condition that doesn't "pre-exist"? :P

you had it before you went to the dr :P

Hi all, thanks for all your input and advice. i was a little out of commission over the weekend, which is why i didn't respond sooner.

i agree, it is such a fine line between covering the cost of insurance or just paying out of pocket. i've been reading up on plans, and it is frustrating because what if the yearly cost of insurance puts you below the poverty line? but if you don't buy it, you make just enough to not qualify for state-funded medical costs?

it is crazy, the whole thing. the unfortunate thing is, if you DON'T have insurance and you DON'T qualify for state aid, then the medical care providers charge you even MORE $$ than they charge the insurance companies... and everyone in the office looks uncomfortable when you say, "I'm a self-pay."

anyway, thanks for your thoughts!
