it's sad that the foods that are healthy are the ones a lot of people can't afford

That's not really true, but it's a good excuse if someone needs one. They're not fat because they're poor, they're fat because they're uneducated and don't know anything about nutrition.

It is a myth. I go to the local farmer's market every check for our meat, fruits, and veggies. You have to make the effort sometimes.

I wouldn't go as far as that last statement. Some, yes. Others, there are a variety of reasons. Like any other issue it isn't as cut and dry as we'd all like to think.

Life's just a crazy ride on a run away train

You can't go back for what you've missed

So make it count, hold on tight find a way to make it right

You only get one trip

So make it good, make it last 'cause it all flies by so fast

You only get one trip

I bought 6 clementines for $1.75 at the farmers market Sunday. Pears are about .50 each too. Bananas are like .25 each, if that. Yoplait yogurts are around 10/$5.

You are fortunate. Fresh fruits aren't nearly as cheap here, even when on sale.

That's a myth.

They are not always easy though, and that is the problem.

Yes, I agree.

When you compare processed, prepackaged unhealthy foods to prepared healthy foods, yes I could see a price difference. But if you're buying fresh produce etc., cooking healthy at home is just as inexpensive as cooking unhealthy. It's the convenience factor.

 Yeah preparing healthy food isn't much different from preparing unhealthy food. Oil, fatty meats, and other things that tend to add calories at home don't cost that much or much less than their healthy counterparts. But you have to pay more for stuff that comes prepackaged. But I still think produce is really expensive. If you're eating fruits and vegetables you're spending money.

I guess it depends on which fruits and vegetables you're buying. I would love to eat fresh berries, but they're so expensive, they're not in our budget. But bananas and apples are.

For example. I think education is so important. Public school cafeteria menus are not a good start.

I guess that's probably true; I haven't bought a banana in like a year. What can I say, I make up for my lack of expensive taste in jewelry with an expensive taste in produce. :)

there has to be a reason why someone is overeating. I agree with alex there are emotional factors as well. it's an addiction just like drugs or alcohol

Poverty is a major factor when it comes to obesity. Living on minimum wage, maybe holding down 2 jobs, having no car = fewer options, eg. buying food from more expensive local shops, buying convenience goods as you don't have the time/energy to make a nutritious meal from scratch, not having enough money to do a 'big shop' and having to buy your meals daily, etc.

The clementines are local + plus it's the season for citrus. Bananas are never too high tho, anywhere in the US. These days everything gets flown in anyhow.

I know California avocados are way cheaper than anywhere else. :) My boss just brought in a bucket of oranges from his Dad's tree.

Dude, it's not big - at all! It's tiny but it's on Sundays which I like. We ride our bikes to it. PS: I bought the pears & bananas at the grocery.

Nope, there isn't one around here, we have to rely on Kroger who aren't known for being very cheap - especially produce items.

ok let me say it differently not as many people have access to a farmer's market at all. I see some road side stands driving down the highway and they have one once a week here in the summer but not year round. I think living in a bigger city makes your choice of farmers market easier especially LA! It seems like they're everywhere.

Yeah, over an hour and 20 mins away. :(

I mean, Platy and I do buy fresh veggie from the store, that isn't an issue at all, but it ain't cheap and it ain't from a farmer's market. I'd love there to be a local one, I really would.

Well, I don't have much to compare to in terms of produce prices around the country, but produce is reasonable here and I don't go to farmers' markets.

I'm pretty nosy when it comes to checking out other people's shopping carriages and it's all about choices. You can't afford some apples but you can buy a 24-pack of coke cans?

looks like you have a large yard why not plant a garden? I'm big on gardens. I think growing up picking fresh veggies every summer and practically eating them off the vines (especially tomatoes) I was spoiled and couldn't live without having a garden every summer

LOL Jenn people like you keep me from buying the imported Swiss chocolate bars at the checkout sometimes. I've heard several times that New Yorkers are skinnier because of all the walking they do, but I think it's the peer pressure to eat like anorexics. I'm always looking in others' baskets too and it's always soooo healthy. Maybe it's just the grocery store in my neighborhood, but I don't even know how they sell the candy and cookies (which don't even have their own section). Everyone is always buying healthy, natural stuff.

So, I think it must be kind of cultural in some ways. People here are thinner, and they inspire others to be thinner. It's a lot easier to excuse the bag of jelly beans in your cart if the person behind you is buying brownies and cupcakes, but it's embarrassing if everyone else is buying papaya and zucchini.
