I think you just have to find the right girls, just like guys.

There are plenty of great gals out there to be friends with. But like with guys if you've been hurt before by women, you have a hard time trusting them.

It depends, my experience is that there are simply two types of women: the cat-fight mean treacherous intrigue-starting bad girl, and then there is normal. The mean women always try to hurt the friendly one, it starts at school where they pick on the normal ones and try to make their life hell, at work it's the nasty one that tells lies or starts rumors and who is always jealous.

After High School I finally met normal women at college, I have plenty of friends. I worked for a while for Conde-Nast, that was not pleasant as all the crazy eye scratching mean women worked there, I then worked for Infineon and now a Internet company, much more relaxed - I prefer to work with men. They are straight forward and don't do rumors, so much nicer. Hubbie prefers to work with men as well, less hassles, and I totally agree.

I swear its an age thing.

I hear some of my younger friends go on about wanting to hang out with guys and only guys and how they can't stand girls.

I remember being this way at around 20...and I kind of grew out of it. I realized that girls weren't out to hurt me, that there are an equal amount of jerks to go around among both sexes.

So I am wondering if its an age thing, or what?

I treasure my girl pals. They're the greatest.

better chance for a girl of getting laid that way

I'm not sure that trustworthiness depends on gender, and I think that both sexes are guilty of gossip and manipulation. I think that guys are often much more subtle in how they handle gossip, pretending not to be interested but often seeming to know what's going on. And of course, with sexual matters, guys are often less discreet.

I admit that I feel more comfortable confronting a male, be it a friend or coworker, who has pissed me off. I feel that I need to handle a situation with a girl a bit more delicately. I'm not sure if that's social conditioning or what. But both sexes can be devious, petty, manipulative, competitive, etc.

In any case, I'm not sure that making a generalization about half the population serves anyone's interests, except perhaps to sell gender-specific products and magazines...

I think it is something that people grow out of. I had friends who felt that the more stereotypically masculine they acted (watching football, being outdoorsy, not talking about their feelings, not enjoying movies with emotion-driven plots or non-spy dramas or romcoms), the better they were than other more feminine girls. Liking football and all that is cool, but it's not superior to liking tennis or even liking knitting. It's a pretty anti-feminist way to act; the only way you can be a valuable woman is by acting as much like a man as possible. That attitude bothers me.

Similarly, saying women are nuts is something I think men say because most of them don't have the same capacity to empathize that we do. Since men and their stereotypical attributes are supposedly "better" than we are, anything about women that men don't understand must be inferior. So, women are crazy. By saying other women are crazy, we're playing that game too.

When we don't get along with each other for petty reasons, it's usually out of insecurity about our place in our job or community. I don't think that's naturally how women are, but I think some of the way our society is set up feeds into that kind of behavior.

I hope I've made some sense.

I totally agree with you. I get so annoyed by those girls who go out of their way to act like one of the guys. You are a girl, if you want to be a guy, get a sex change. I never used to have problems with girls being catty until I started dating my husband. So many girls were fine with me until I got with him, then the claws came out, it was NUTS! I will never understand not liking anyone for who they are dating, or who they are friends with or because you think they are "better or worse" than you are... Like someone for who they are and get over yourself! I'm hoping its an age thing or else those people die young ;)

I think girls want people to think they're just one of the guys, but I don't know about that.

Well I have had a couple of friends who claimed to be just "one of the guys"....until they hooked one of the guys and married them, and then they just weren't one of the guys anymore.

So funny how that happens.

*sorry upon reading that, I should state that I am talking about certain girls...the ones I am referring to in this thread, I don't mean all girls***

Oh geez, I was kidding!

I was too. Kinda. Prior to Mags, I seemed to always end up with the psychos. I mean really out there in la la land.

Lady, people aren't chocolates. Do you know what they are mostly? Bastards. ####### coated bastards with ####### filling. But I don't find them half as annoying as I find naive bobble-headed optimists who walk around vomiting sunshine.
