Social Security # Application: Let's Review, Shall We?

Okay, Ewen and I are going to the SS office next week to get his Social Security number (we hope). We'll go first thing in the morning.

We will take his completed SS-5 (checked "Legal Alien Authorized to Work"), his passport with K-1 visa and unexpired I-94, his British long form birth certificate, and a copy of the SS policy statement regarding K-1 visa holders. It will be 16 days after his arrival in the States.

Will that do it?

That works. And if they say they can't find him in the system, don't panic. That's what they told us too. We still got the card within a couple of weeks.

So if everything goes okay, he gets a letter saying that he's applied for a SS #, and then the card comes in the mail in a week or two?

I got my letter that day stating I had applied for a SSN, but it took about 7 weeks for the actual card to arrive. I think it just depends how fast/slow your local social security office processes the request.

Document wise you are OK. Status still needs to be verified and no telling how that's going to turn out until you get there.
