Parents here, what medical coverage can they get?

My parents arrived here as permanant residents, their ages are 56 and 62. What kind of medical benefits can they get. They both need to see a doctor often. Is medicaid listed as a means tested benefit? what can I have for them so that we wont have to deal with high medical bills? Any help is appreciated. Thanks

I remember Alan saying on here you don't get medicare until you have been here 5 years providing you fill all the other conditions.

It wouldn't surprise me if your only option was normal medical insurance for them.

My experience with my mother-in-law is that there is nothing for her. She is 66, and all private plans for that age are tied to medicare, which she cannot get. If you signed the I-864A you are on the hook for her. My MIL costs us about $250 per month for routine Dr. visits and cholesterol medicine. Hope nothing catastrophic happens.

Your best bet is to try to get them on with your company insurance or purchase medical insurance. I know it is kind of pricey, but your only other choice is to take them to the County Hospitals that treat people with no insurance. Good Luck.

No, they don't qualify for medicaid. Check out that I-864 you or somebody signed. You are responsible if they can't pay. If there's an emergency, take them to the hospital and get them treated. Then it's up to your conscience whether you pay the bill for them or not.
