Will Smith says comment about Hitler misinterpreted

LOS ANGELES - Will Smith is angry over celebrity gossip Web site articles that he said misinterpreted a recent remark he made in a Scottish newspaper about Adolf Hitler.

In a story published Saturday in the Daily Record, Smith was quoted saying: "Even Hitler didn't wake up going, let me do the most evil thing I can do today.' I think he woke up in the morning and using a twisted, backwards logic, he set out to do what he thought was good.' "

The quote was preceded by the writer's observation: "Remarkably, Will believes everyone is basically good."

Over the weekend, dozens of celebrity gossip Web sites posted articles about the comment, many saying that Smith believed that Hitler was a "good" person.

"It is an awful and disgusting lie," Smith said in a statement Monday provided by his publicist. "It speaks to the dangerous power of an ignorant person with a pen. I am incensed and infuriated to have to respond to such ludicrous misinterpretation."

"Adolf Hitler was a vile, heinous vicious killer responsible for one of the greatest acts of evil committed on this planet," read the statement.

That's what I got out of what he said. The people whom we consider 'evil' in the world don't think they are evil like Snidely Whiplash, cackling and snickering....they think they are doing good. I think that's a very important point to me made with what is happening in this world today.

I don't think saying that Hitler set out to do good but had twisted logic is an obvious condemnation. I don't think that "Smith believed that Hitler was a good person" is much of a stretch. If they had said, "Will Smith believes the Holocaust was good", it'd be a different story. To me, it does sound like he thinks Hitler was a good, albeit logically challenged person.

I understand what he means too. Basically he thinks that in Hitler's twisted and psychopathic brain he thought he was doing good. That doesn't mean to us sanies that this WAS good, just that from the point of view of a maniac it was. Hitler obviously thought that what he was doing was the right thing to do...otherwise he wouldn't have done it. Course the rest of us could see that it was some of the worst atrocities ever carried out towards humans, ever.

Seems pretty simple to me and I can't see what all the fuss is about. He's an actor, not a brain surgeon...and it must have been a slow day on the the celebrity news front that day.

When people do evil things, it's usually for their own benefit which they think is good for them. That doesn't mean they are good...I think that's what he was saying.

As a public figure, I don't think I'd ever be using "good" and "Hitler" in the same sentence.
