I applied for my SSN September 16th and it is now the 23rd of December. That's 5 weeks and they said I would have it within 4. Should I go to the SSN office on the 26th to check in?

I would definitely go check on it. My husband's SSN took 8 weeks because the first time they sent out his card, they put the wrong apartment number on the envelope and we never received it. We would have never known if we hadn't gone back to ask about it.

I meant November, yes sorry.

I went down today. DHS is still not approving it. I guess there is a stack waiting approval. So we play the waiting game for the 97th time of this process.

My husband got his green card and Welcome to America letter 7 weeks after POE. Then the SSA office said they were waiting for approval from DHS, I didn't buy it and called them really upset about the whole thing, that still didn't work. Then I had to go in person the next day and they told me "Well, what do you know, your husband's SS# was approved yesterday". I think it was too much of a coincidence that he was finally approved for a SS# THE day I called to complain about it.

"The 2 weeks we quote never happens, I don't know why they put that on any literature. Right now it is taking DHS at LEAST 3 months to get back to us with verification. So when you get your green card, bring it in and we can manually clear the hold without DHS and get you your number in 10 days"

That is what I was told just now by a supervisor at SSA.

Where does SSA say it takes two weeks to be assigned an SSN? It's 2 weeks to receive the card once the application has been processed.

Don't know why the office manager told you that, since procedure requires immigration status to be verified. You don't get a pass with an I-551 card.

Geez...so sorry for the delay. I don't know why if varies from one SS office to another though I've heard many members having issues with SS offices, then going to another office without a problem. Perhaps our case is out of the ordinary, though my fiance applied for SS one week after entering as a K-1 and received the SS card a week later.

#1 reason why things vary is immigration getting the person's information entered into their database so that SSA can verify the person's status. #2 would be SSA employees not knowing or following POMS procedure.
