Cost of visiting U.S. to rise for most foreigners

Associated Press

WASHINGTON — The cost for most foreign tourists, students and businesspeople to come to the United States is going up.

The State Department announced today that it will increase the application fee for nonimmigrant visas by more than 30 percent, from $100 to $131, on Jan. 1 to pay for increased processing costs and security enhancements implemented since the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks.

"Because of new security-related costs, new information technology systems, and inflation, the $100 ... fee is lower than the actual cost of processing non-immigrant visas," it said in a statement.

The department is required by law to cover the cost of the additional procedures, including more complete fingerprinting of applicants, through the fee. But since the last price bump in 2002, it has been absorbing losses.

"We are now collecting 10 fingerprints from each applicant, and the cost charged by the FBI to review those fingerprints no longer allows us to do this," the statement said.

The new fee will apply to all applicants for tourist, student and business visa applicants, the department said.

It will not apply to visas issued to prospective immigrants to the United States nor to citizens of the 27 mainly European countries that are part of the U.S. Visa Waiver Program, unless they are seeking permission to enter the United States for longer than 90 days.

"Credibility in immigration policy can be summed up in one sentence: Those who should get in, get in; those who should be kept out, are kept out; and those who should not be here will be required to leave."

"...for the system to be credible, people actually have to be deported at the end of the process."

US Congresswoman Barbara Jordan (D-TX)

Testimony to the House Immigration Subcommittee, February 24, 1995

Not for everyone. Some currencies track with the dollar more than others.

True. I know that I got more Birr for my Dollar in Ethiopia this time around than I did 4 years ago.

Well, I didn't make up the name for the Ethiopian currency. That's what it's called.
