Since when did it become acceptable to define American Muslims by their religion and not their shared nationality?

Presumably around the time when the newly elected president was being portrayed as a

So those "Christians" are not be tolerant of others but their bigotry is to be tolerated. That would appear to be the essence of what you're trying to convey here.

That's what gets my goat about a lot of this. People (including posters like LIB) want to pretend that they are free speech advocates when all they are really doing is pushing a bigoted point of view that they happen to agree with.

In this context conversations about free speech and tolerance are less about respecting opposing views and more about avoiding any sort of criticism or response. It's tied into this idea of how white people are being marginalised by blacks because of affirmative action and why it's ok to arm yourself against minorities because you can assume someone is a criminal or a terrorist based on their name and how they look.

As I said, it was very telling how in 2008 the birthers were promoting the idea that the president wasn't a legitimate American and was instead a secret Muslim. Not even touching on the factual inaccuracies of that, the larger question there should who decided that a person can only be a true American if they are white, Christian and conservative.

It might be the 21st century but there appears to be no shortage of people living in the USA who are still living as though it's the 1930s.
