K1-Visa Interview tricky question

Hello everyone,

 

What would be the best answer for a question that says "why can't you marry your fiance in your home country instead of thinking of doing the marriage in the USA?

I believe the OP is referring to if that question were to come up during the embassy interview. 

 

I too have wondered if anybody has been asked this question and what the appropriate response would be.

Seems like a silly question to be asked but in either case there's probably no 'best answer' other than the truth: "Because of (...) reasons."

If someone is from the same country as their fiance and thus would be able to have both their families at the international wedding it seems like a pretty reasonable question.

Usually the truth is the best answer.

For us, I don't have a passport and I have an 8 year old daughter with special needs. We didn't want to move her out of the country, as that could be way to jarring for her, and away from her biological father who is still very much in her life, so it was simply easier and the best choice for us to marry and then have my husband immigrate to the US.

I have a similar situation, even more extreme reason for them to ask. I live in the same country as my fiancé and DCF is available here. In fact we are still considering canceling our petition and doing DCF since you get green card right away. So I've worried about the same question. 

 

My answer. First I didn't know about DCF when we filed the K-1. This probably doesn't apply to you. But MOST importantly "I want to be with my future wife in America as quickly as possible to start our future life together. If you married in another country you would have to file a CR-1 which is must slower." I think this is a very reasonable answer and proves your desire to be with your fiancé.

It really all depends on why you chose K1 instead of marrying and going CR1. There's no wrong or right. There's why. Plus, they may not ask that anyway, that would be odd. For us, it was the quickest way to be able to live together, and the main downside of no work permit/green card wasn't that big of a deal because I'd want to give my husband a few months of settling in/ language learning anyway. Plus going from engaged to legally married in a day or so was way to crazy for us, and delaying the marriage for normal, relationshipy reasons (engagement exists for a reason) would then delay living together even further so K1 was just an obvious choice.

The truth will always win out. I understand the angst but try to be calm and you will do fine. From experiences on here it rarely seems as bad as what people thought it would be.
