Driver's License

Hi All,

Today I went to DMV to renew my driver's license and they told me the I-751 Receipt Notice (extending my conditional resident status for one year until the immigration approves my 10 year GC) is not enough for them to extend my driver's license. Anyone had any similar experience? What should I do? I sent my package in October/14.

Thank you!!!

Done.

It seems that I have seen a similar-themed thread as yours. You may want to try using the forum's search function or review a couple of pages of forum postings. Sorry, I can't readily find the thread.....

Good luck.

I have similar experience. I got a letter from DMV that we need to provide a proof of status, we mailed DMV all NOA its almost 2 months we have not heard back.

when we went to local DMV they said expiry was due to residency status expiry they can not extend locally or issue temp license we need to wait till we get anything from DMV Sacramento. They also told us it takes 2-3 month to hear from DMV.

Thanks for the information ....I wish I could visit another DMV office but I live in a very isolated area I believe the closest would be almost 4 hours away. =(

I spoke with the supervisor at the DMV here but they said they need the approval notice and that they cannot accept the extension letter. I am trying to contact DMV Sacramento now to figure out if there's anything they can do...will post here in case I have any updates.

Hi

i just want to share my experienced about this topic. I went in DMV a month ago hoping they will extend my DL using my extension letter the person in the window said they will not accept the extension letter and they want the approval notice and i said it takes 6 months or so to get the approval i explained to her over and over again and she said she will show my one extension to her supervisor , so i waited like forever and she came

back and said '' okay the supervisor will accept this letter''. she was a nice Lady.

On CA DMV website says the Notice of Action - 797 must be accepted as a proof of legal presence.

I will return to the DMV again and bring this page printed with me.

Another good tip for you. In California Apply for Identification card before you apply for License and that would grant you a Driver's license for 5 years.

Trust me on my old EAD when I was in California. I applied for Identification card then License and I got the ID Card for 6 years then when I got the License it was 5 years.

In California they intend to restrict the License based on the validity of your work-permit or Green Card. In California only you are allowed to hold 2 seperate cards for States ID + Driver's License simultaneously.

I would recommend you to get ID Card first then go another day and apply for DL. This would save you fees in the future because they will restrict your DL to couple months and then you need to reapply again when you get the 10 year GC.

This is my great tip for you in California and it helped many other people who held EAD and got it for 5 year instead of 1 year.

I know they would accept the stamp in my passport when I went to get mine originally. Would it be convenient for you to go to an infopass appointment and get a stamp?

The infopass appointment would be at one of the USCIS offices right? The closest is 4 hours and a half from where I live.

I would be willing to go there and get the stamp but since I might hear from the immigration soon on my case (applied in October/14) I would rather try to go to the DMV again and only show my ID or the 797 notice again and see how it goes or wait until beginning of next month and see if I receive a decision on my case.

Well that certainly isn't convenient! Oh well, it was a thought. I think it is fair to push them on accepting the extension letter! Good luck!
