Passport/Visa renewals vs starting from scratch

Aloha,

Soumanti and I have mega-hopes that she can come visit in June. He passport expires

in a bit over a week and she currently has a 6 month B2 visa that will be expiring soon.

We have three questions -

1. Soumanti will begin with passport tomorrow. Since her current passport is still valid,

can we expect the processing to go faster than if it was expired?

2. Is there 'expedited' processing in India??

3. Since passport is still good, can we work concurrently on extending/renewing/whatevering

her B2??

Mahalo,

Bill and Soumanti

Expedite what? Every embassies require passports valid for at least 6 months to be qualified for any visa services.

All she needs to do is to renew her passport and use it along with old passport (visa stamp is inside.)

Expedite the passport processing. I know when I renewed mine, I had two options.

First option was 3-4 week processing for a certain cost. Second option was 1 week

processing at a higher cost.

She might have to ask passport department in India, they might give her better info.

Unlike in the US, I don't know if India offers expedited renewals for passports. All else being unchanged, renewal should be smoother than if applying for the first time.

Why did she not renew it earlier? The expiration date is right on the passport.

Is her planned June visit on the existing 6-mo B2 she used in February? If so, make sure that one is multiple entry.

Kiran n Suds,

Aloha again!!! There is an expedited option and she will be going to the office later today. This has been delayed because of

her studies.

About her current visa - how would she know if it's multiple entry?? Neither one of us even considered that possibility.. Even if it

is, there can't be more than one or two months left on it. And we have desires to spend more time together than that.

Can a visa be renewed or does she have to start over? In the case of either, can she begin before the old expires???

Mahalo,

Bill and Soumanti

Since Canadians do not travel on visas for tourist to the US I am ignorant to the process. Can one be admitted into the U.S. for longer than the visa? For example, can the OP's wife be admitted for 6 months even though the visa only has 2 months until the expiration date?

Thanks

Canadian wife.. visa expiration date is the last date a traveler can arrive at POE to request entry. Up to CBP to grant length of stay. So, technically, a 6-month stay can be granted on a 2 month visa balance, though just as easily could be much less.

Do a random google image search for US visas; the designation "M" below Entries denotes multiple entry "M" visa. Or a numerical designation could denote the number of times to apply to enter.
