Hi,

My fiancee and my child are going to come to US next month with the K1/K2 visas. Can someone tell me the steps to apply for the SSN?

For the K1 to obtain a SSN is pretty straightforward as mentioned in the pinned thread. For the K2, they will need to have either their EAD, or Green Card (GC) before they can apply for a SSN.

We sent in my wife and stepson's AOS packets within 2 weeks of our marriage. Their applications included AOS/EAD/AP (I-485/I-765/I-131). After my stepson got his EAD/AP combo card, he was then able to go to SSA and apply for his SSN.

in particular, the K1/K3 AOS Guide: http://www.visajourney.com/content/k1k3aos and this USCIS web site: http://www.uscis.gov/i-485 for more specific information. As stated in the USCIS link, there are no extra fees is you file for all three (AOS/EAD/AP) at the same time.

After they get their GC, you can go back to SSA office, with a new SS-5 application and GC, and apply to have the "Valid for Work Only with DHS Authorization" notation removed and a regular SSN card will be issued.
