Hi. I went thru the same situation. I applied for the SSN 1 week after my marriage (4months ago) and they said the system blocked me or something because my visa expiration (which was only 2 weeks close) so they told me to go back to the SS office when I have my marriage certificate and the EAD. On Aug 10 applied again and the lady that took my application said that for whatever reason my info did not appear in the system so she made copies of my EAD and passport. She did not make a copy of my marriage certificate and handed me a note with information about that they have to verify my documents and that the verification could take up to 30 days... well Still waiting. This week I have to call again to the SS office to see if they verified my documents already.

In your case I would suggest to go to the ss office near and bring your passport, EAD and Marriage certificate. I dont think they will ask you for another document. Those are the important ones I think :)

We just took my wife's passport and I-94 card. That was it. We did it two weeks after her arrival, we weren't even married yet. After we were married, we went back with the marriage certificate showing her new surname and we got the new card with her new surname on it a week later.

Umm, why were you denied?

It took the DHS too long to verify my information and in that time my I-94 ran out. They denied me on the basis that they couldnt issue me a social security number because my documentation expired. super frustrating.

I see, sorry to hear that. Bastards!

Hopefully it will be smooth with your EAD in hand.

Give it maybe 10 days from the date of the EAD card before you go. Your new EAD status needs to be updated by USCIS. I say this because we went to SSA to show the naturalization certificate to update social security records. The lady said, "I hope it's in here. They say to allow 10 days for them to get the record of you citizenship entered."

Take your passport, EAD card, and marriage certificate if you need to prove why the EAD and passport have different last names. If you have other photo ID take that too but likely not needed.
