We are Muslims and were married in a mosque. This is a legal marriage in the USA and both the USCIS and the NVC approved our case with only our religious certificate. When my husband arrived for his appointment at the Algiers Embassy in 2008, the Vice Consul told us that both the USCIS and NVC had made a mistake and that she needed a civil certificate in our file. Worse yet, she sent our file back to the Vermont Service Center and it got caught in a huge, 4 year long line of returned cases for something that clearly was not our fault. It was only through hiring an attorney and working closely with my congressman's office that we were able to get our file expedited out of that ridiculous line, and today, 11 full months later my husband had another appointment at the Algiers Embassy and he received the visa! Please be sure to get a civil marriage if you are a Muslim even if the law does not particularly require it. The Algiers Embassy has a differing opinion than both the USCIS and NVC on this issue. | 2011-04-24 | ||
