Review Topic: IR-1/CR-1 Visa

We had our visa interview yesterday (August 22, 2018), so I wanted to share our experience. Overall I was incredibly impressed with the experience. The embassy was organized and efficient, the security and staff were all friendly and patient, and the wait was not bad at all.

Here's how things went down to the best of my recollection:

-Our appointment was for 1pm, so we (my wife and I) arrived around 12:45pm. We waited across the street in a bus-stop style waiting area. At close to 1pm, a security offer waived at us to cross the street and stand in front of the security entrance. He then called out the names of everyone on the scheduled list and checked their passports. He also checked the passports of those accompanying applicants (for example me, the USC). So be sure to have your passport with you if you accompany. Also, be sure to call or e-mail the embassy in advance if you (the USC) wish to attend the interview. They will add you to the appointment list so you can enter the embassy.

-We went through security (basically an airport style security experience), left our phones with security (they cannot be taken into the embassy), and proceeded to the main building. We were immediately directed to a window where embassy staff took my wife's passport. We sat back down and waited about 10-15 minutes before being called back up. The lady was nice enough (not super enthusiastic, but not mean either). She collected all of our documents. Civil documents, relationship proofs, affidavit of support, etc. You name it, she took it. She then explained to us how the conditional green card would work (almost as if she was sure we would receive it). Then we sat back down to wait our turn for the interview with the consular officer.

-Sometime around 1:50-2:00pm, the consular officer called us both up to the window for the interview. He administered the oath to my wife, and immediately began the interview. He was incredibly nice and friendly, and introduced himself as soon as we got to the window. The moment we started talking I knew we were going to be fine. The interview was entirely in English and went something like this:
1. (To me) "So what's it been like living in Romania?" He asks this because I've been a resident in Romania since my wife and I were married.
2. (To my wife) "Tell me how you guys met". My wife told him our story. He asked a few questions for clarification, nothing intense, just a nice conversation to fill in all the details.
3. (To my wife) "How is his family? Have you met them?"
4. (To me) I don't remember exactly how he phrased the question, but he inquired about my work situation (in relation to my affidavit of support). I work for an American company remotely from Romania, so he wanted to verify that this employment would continue. He was perfectly satisfied.
5. (To me) "When do you intend to return to the United States?"
6. (To both of us) "Congratulations on your little one!" One of the pictures we included in our evidence was a pregnancy announcement (so it's clear that he did look through the evidence we provided).
6. (To both of us) "Everything looks completely credible. You will receive your visa sometime early next week."

That was it. The interview lasted less than 5 minutes. Ours definitely went quicker than other spousal visa applicants that went before us, not sure if they had a more complicated situation or what, but ours was an absolute breeze.

For those who must travel to Bucharest for the interview and have bags, I recommend leaving your bags at the Baneasa shopping center (about a 15-20 minute walk south of the embassy). There is a free baggage storage locker area there, close to the food court area.

Review Topic: K1 Visa

My birthday was on July 26th and I'm pretty sure the super nice lady at the Consulate chose to put my Visa on that very day, instead of July 24th.
The interview was a peach; went in with so many emotions and they all just disappeared once she started talking to me. I guess I was lucky.
My binder was full of pictures and colorful and looked more like a scrapbook; she told me she was happy to see something other than b/w copies of stuff, hehe.

As other people said in previous reviews the interview was at 1PM. It makes sense to arrive like five minutes before, but not more than ten, otherwise you will wait across the street from the embassy in a bus stop style covered area....
Since I am not from Bucharest I had a big backpack with me, but I left it in the Baneasa Shopping City. There is a garderobe (pin coded wood cabinets - different sizes) on the first floor (la parter) not far from from the entrance where the Starbucks is. From there you can walk to the embassy, it's like 20 minutes walk, around 2 km.

I didn't enter the building first, also at the first window I was not the first to give my papers. People just presented at the window in the order we entered the building. Be sure you have the correct picture, not just the size, but also to be sharp and crisp. They took the picture, but the lady said I should get a new set of pictures for further documents (AOS I assume) because this is not that good and she couldn't scan it or the system rejected it or something.

Honestly not sure how long I was sitting there, but I was called first to a different window, where the consul was waiting for me. After taking my fingerprints and maybe the oath or the oath was coming later, don't remember cleary she asked if I want to do the interview in a more private setting, or it's ok at this window. I said I am fine here, actually I didn't care if other people would hear my answers. The distance between the windows and the waiting area is kinda small, it's like a corridor.

The interview itself went fine. I was nervous before, but when we started I just calmed down. I think she asked the questions you would find if you google k1 interview questions, maybe a bit more tailored and customized based on your answers, she didn't ask anything special, a big part of the interview was about how we met, how many times, where, and basically the history of our relationship, etc.

I took the following documents with me:

1. Passport
2. DS-160 (confirmation page)
3. 2 Passport style photo (They asked only one)
4. Affidavit of Support Form I-134 (Scanned copy was fine, but I confirmed that with them before the interview)
5. Supporting documents for 134 (tax transcripts, property ownership, tax extension for 2017, etc)
6. My Birth Certificate (original and copy)
7. Divorce decree (HAS TO BE ORIGINAL and certified)
8. Police clearances
9. Medical Exam result
10. Proof of relationship (emails, pictures, etc)
11. Visa payment fee from Banca Transilvania. (I didnt' have this, I payed the fee online on ustraveldocs. They didn't ask for the confirmation becuse they can see the payment based on the passport number, so be sure if you pay online, that the ustraveldocs profile is completed correctly)

Review Topic: K1 Visa

Our interview was scheduled at 1:00pm, and we arrived around 12:45. They made us hang out across the street where is a special covered space for people to wait. At 12:57, a guy came out to check people off the list and send them inside one by one. We went into the security area where I had to leave my fitbit and our car keys. We didn't bring any bags or purses because we knew they weren't allowed.

After we walked into the second, larger building, we were instructed to go to one of the windows. The lady asked for all of our documents and she organized a file for us. Then she took my fiance's fingerprints. We had prepared so many documents and I think the only thing they didn't take was my original birth certificate (petitioner). Everything else from me (divorce papers, last year's tax return, affidavit of support, savings account statement) they took. Fiance (beneficiary) gave them his original birth certificate, police report, DS-160 receipt, visa fee receipt, and medical files.

We ended up waiting for about 25 minutes after that and chatting with another waiting couple. They were super awesome. I love that I've met so many cool people through this process. The actual interview - they call you up to the window and you take the oath and use your finger prints to "sign" it. Then the interview guy tells you he's going to ask some questions and type while you answer. He was really nice. He asked questions like, "Who is your petitioner?" and omg my fiance was so nervous - I had to chime in, like, "It's meeee" haha. I will say that we tried to practice for the questions. However, we were both so nervous and my face was flushed that we just kind of over answered every question. Other things he asked us: how we met, why are we going to the US now, when is the wedding, some questions about my fiance's job, how long I've been living in Romania.

Anyway, after ten minutes of this special kind of torture, he takes a deep breath and says, "Well, your visa is approved! Congratulations and I wish you the best of luck in the United States!" and I swear you could've knocked me over with a feather. We left in a really excellent mood :D

Overall, even though it was 10/10 on the stress meter for us, the staff at the embassy were very patient, kind, and professional.
