  1. See, I would have put you down as a "teach a man to fish" kind of guy.
I don't know how to fish......and I don't eat fish anyway. Besides, killing animals is WRONG!!!

he's being totally insensitive and ignorant, it seems to be a current theme throughout his posts since the election. i read what you said you did for work and i think it is very commendable, ignore him and keep up the good work.
Oh yes!! Disagreement is now being "insensitive". Is that the new policy? See, with Bush, it was "disagreement means you're a terrorist".
  2. I used the election as the introduction to my class today. (I train homeless men to staff houses for people with mental illness.) I said that if a mixed-race boy in the US with a name like Barack Obama, brought up by a single Mum on food stamps, can overcome those obstacles and become President, then they can too put their past behind them and achieve their goals.
That's a heartwarming little speech - but the guys are homeless. Why not bring some cash with you next time, and give each one $5000 and a rental application for an apartment - and provide them with an employment reference.
  3. Well noone is going to endorse legislation for taking away the rights that other minority groups have won. Are they?
You're kidding, right?? There are PLENTY of people who endorse legislation to strip people of all kinds of rights. Find a nice white guy with a southern accent to troll around certain parts of the country and ask some questions about stripping blacks, jews, muslims, immigrants and others of various rights and see what kind of response you get.
  4. ...makes you want to throw tomatoes at him, doesn't it?
Are you crazy??? Tomatoes here are almost $4/pound. I'm not wasting tomatos on throwing them at someone, especially when rocks are free.

    They are frightened.
Isn't it possible that "they" just disagree???

By the way - by using "them","them","us", "we" and similar terms, you are clearly making a separation and division of people....

  5. They've voted on the proposition, certainly. But that doesn't really address the question of whether a vote was needed to begin with.
Well, given that the initiative was put on the ballot using the proper procedure - it seems pretty clear that the required number of voters in California have decided that the vote was needed to begin with.

Perhaps we're not at a point where civil rights are largely set in stone or that they can be assumed for others on the basis of the experiences of other minority groups who were subjected to repression. But it seems to me that we're not at a a point where we're going to see a regression to racial segregation laws or for taking away minority's voting rights.
    Um....OK.

That dude is in SERIOUS need of a shave and a haircut - and although you can't precisely tell from the photo, my money is that he is also in desperate need of a bath, clean clothes and some deodorant. I think he could also use a new hat.
  7. I think I missed something important
Don't worry. There's another election in 4 years.

No.I just am joining others in no more aggression, and no more reading threads that make me feel bad.
Why on earth would you possibly allow any thread on VJ to cause you to feel bad??????? Good lord...talk about giving way too much power to the internet.

  9. The way I look at it - if we've reached a point in time where traditionally repressed minorities (women and blacks for example) have won equivalence in terms of their legal and civil rights, do we really need a public referendum to address similar issues of discrimination pertaining to another minority group?
Well, it would seem that a majority of the voting public in California would say "yes".
It would. But that doesn't really answer my question.
How does it not answer your question?? The California voters have answered it.

Religion can be used for good or bad. Like anything else, we tend to focus on the negative rather than the positive. A core principal of Christianity is that we have no right to judge others.
Then what is Prop 8 if not the religious judging others?

It could be non-religious judging others too. Also - some people just need other people to hate. Doesn't matter who, or why, or what the reason is. They just need a target onto which they can project their own dissatisfaction in life.
  10. how killing "values" is comparable to killing living, breathing beings.
I never said it was....the question was "what dies..." not "who dies..." - and it has nothing to do with KILLING anything.

But I thought we were playing the irrelevant association game... ;)

I dunno what game you're playing.

I think it has something to do with married gay couples hunting from helicopters.

    So it would seem.
  11. If Obama, God forbid, passes in one way or another, we get Biden. Not a bad deal in my opinion.
Actually, I was half expecting shots to ring out and for Obama to clutch his chest while he was giving his acceptance speech. I was thinking, "Wow - President Biden" and just imagining the riots that would result.

If McCain were to become incapacitated during his term of office (as happened to Ariel Sharon at a similar age) Palin would have become president. I think that idea horrified a lot of people and IMO - it put a bigger emphasis on the VP candidate than it ordinarily would have.
I think you give the voters too much credit.
