In Alaska - Stevens is ahead by less than 2% (about 2500 votes), with about half of the votes counted.

Our lone house member is ahead by 5% over his primary (democratic) opponent, with at least half of the votes counted.

What's the deal with the high gas price? I thought I heard your gas tax was comparatively low.

It's true. We currently have NO state gas tax (it was suspended recently). We also pull the oil out of the ground here, and we refine the oil here. There is no obvious reason why we have the highest prices in the nation - other than the simple that that people will pay it. Now, we know that people will pay higher prices elsewhere, but their prices are lower than what people will pay. So why does that not happen here? It's clear that simple supply and demand is not the explanation. Personally, I think it comes down to the simple fact that the oil companies know they can screw Alaska and the rest of the nation will not care - that it will not cause the big uproar that it would in say, Texas, and so they do what they want with impunity. That's my answer.

My state's income is about 85% derived from oil royalties. So, the more oil sells for, the more my state gets. The more the state gets from oil royalties, the less likely it is to raise my taxes.

People weren't slaves because of the amount of Black blood they had. They were slaves because they were property. Color had little to do with it. There are Blacks in the US whose early American ancesters were never slaves, and may have owned slaves. There were rich blacks. The first female millionaire in the US was a Black woman. There is far more to Black history in this country other than slavery.

From my understanding in Alaska, if Stevens isn't seated in the Senate, the Governor makes the decision about a replacement and there isn't necessarily a new election. I don't think she can appoint herself to the Senate.

No, this is not true.

It will depend on how such decisions are made in Alaska.

It works exactly as I described. Upon a vacancy, a special election must be called within 60 days. The governor can appoint someone to fill the position until the special election yields a result.

But even so - before this change was made, she COULD appoint herself. The previous governor appointed his daughter to the senate seat that HE vacated by becoming governor. This is why the change was made to require a special election.
