  1. Need some advice all.....my fiance went to the Lagos Police station to obtain the police certificate and get his fingerprints and background check and they told him it would cost $180 USD !!! this does not sound right, can anyone shed any light on what we might be able to do, please..

    Thank you.

My husband went last week to the station you are being referred to by others here. The cost was $50 and he tipped the officer to get the papers processed quicker, but still he can get it in one day. His medicals which he's taken twice cost $300 both times, including today...I don't know where the other's are getting the lower cost??? Lucky them! :)

My husband was told 5,500N at first. He told them it was too much and they lowered it to 4,000N - NO TIPPING necessary and got the PCC in less than 4 hours.

  2. You don't need SSN or Green Card to work if you have the CR1 visa stamp.

Your visa is your temporary I-551 (upon being stamped) and your ability to work. The I-9 which EVERY employee fills out lists "foreign passport with I-551 stamp" as being the only thing needed. If you look at the for you need 1 item from column A OR 1 from column B and 1 from column C. The foreign passport with I-551 is in column A. I've spent the entire week explaining this to potential employers that my husband is applying with.

  3. Your attorney is right...the request is so that USCIS can verify that there was a valid marriage, and the divorce decree is so that they can verify that said marriage was terminated legally. Not everyone is married and divorced in the same state....or even in the same country. So that is why they ask for both. There will be times in the future, when a request from USCIS, or the consulate may not make sense and leave you scratching your head. There is an explanation behind each request....it may not be your logic, but it does make sense. Bottom line, you want your SO to get a visa....so if they tell you to jump, you ask how high and do it.

Wow, I missed something, I did not send in former marriage cert to hubby #1 AKA "Death wish marriage" only Divorce decree.

But we got approved , maybe I better pull old marriage license and take to hubbys interview? ! ? ! More ####### to dig out.

DITTO, I only sent in two divorce decrees, no marriage certificates except to my husband now. He is here with me in the States now. I sent in barest of bare info for all parts and was approved quickly with no RFE's.

Many divorce decrees show both maiden and married name. If yours does, no worries.

    1st one didn't, 2nd one did.

  4. Hi, been searching where could we find the alien registration number so they said its in the Noa2.

When i checked my Noa2 there was no alien number beside the benefeciary, anyone experience this too? Thinking of the USCIS asking for my alien number for our daughter (stepchild) case coz we haven't filed it together. Hope could get some idea from you guys...

    Thanks....

You won't get an alien registration number until SO enters the US. My husband just entered last week and the officer at JFK wrote it in his passport.

  6. Hoping someone can help clarify this for me...

My fiancee and I are trying to figure out if it is better for us to get the K-1 or get married and get the CR-1.

One of our main concerns is how long it will take for her to be allowed to work after entering the US, and what restrictions apply to her work status.

Also, we would like to know which one takes longer to get. (I am aware of the guides and timelines, I am just a bit confused)

It seems that the K-1 is faster for her to enter, but the CR-1 has more benefits. Is this correct?

I am posting this concern both in the CR-1 and the K-1 forums, since it applies to both. Any help is appreciated.

CR1 cheaper, just as fast and can work upon entry.

  7. woooo hoooo!!! My wife Cleared her Interview!!! Finally the wait is over and after long excruciating 9 months we'll be back together......

Thank you all for your support and help!!

    Congratulations!

    When is she coming here?

Thanks!! We are planning on sometime next week.

Oh, you're so lucky! Safe trip to the wifey! Don't forget us once she gets here :)

As for us, we are currently looking at December before hubster can come here :( Things just aren't working out as we planned them, this totally blows, he got the visa in August :sigh:

How TOTALLY frustrating - so sorry V.

  8. Your visa with the entry stamp is a temp GC and also work authorized.

However, you will need to provide your SSN to your employer.

If you have a job prospect in near future, go apply for one at a local SSA office.

Some people don't get their SSN even if they checked 'yes' for the automatic assignment of a SSN upon the arrival to the US.

REALLY???? My husband can work with just his visa entry stamp??? We also have a CR1 visa. He has been here since Wednesday and was offered a job yesterday, we told them he couldn't work until he had his SSN - GRRRR. My fault I should have come here sooner! We can't even get an ID card without the SSN so I just ASSUMED we were dead in the water until that SSN came!! CRUD!

  9. VISA IN HAND!!!!!!!!!!

They nearly didn't give it us, but there was NO WAY in H E DOUBLE HOCKEY STICKS I was going to leave the embassy without it.

First they told us they didn't have it, I said yes you do we were told it would be ready today, because our plane leaves tomorrow morning

then they said we didn't have an appointment, I said oh yes we do, see this little green piece of paper it says 28 September at 1400 that is TODAY right now this is our appointment,

then they told me to leave and call the consulars office, I said I'm standing here right now I will speak to someone here and now I am not calling

then they said you need to come back tomorrow, I said NO our appoint is today and our plane leaves tomorrow morning

then they said the woman who puts the packet together wasn't there, I said we were told it would be ready today at 1400 we are leaving tomorrow morning we need it right now.

then they said why can't you come back tomorrow, I said, OUR PLANE LEAVES AT 0700AM IN THE MORNING (do you think I could have been any clearer???) we cannot come back tomorrow we must have it TODAY!

With each reason they gave us I stood ABSOLUTELY firm and told I was NOT leaving without the visa. My husband said a couple times, maybe we should be patient and just come back tomorrow, I told him NO, they gave us an appointment for today at this time and I am NOT leaving. God gave me the boldness to stand my ground and refuse to leave. Finally they allowed us into the embassy and within 2 minutes we had the visa in our hands! Not only that the cover page on the envelope stated that the package was complete on 24 Sept at 4:30pm. I can't believe they tried to lie to me and tell me it wasn't ready!!!! I think I was a bit scary to the woman at the window on the outside of the embassy, she kept fumbling and calling different people LOL!!!!

    Hello WG,

I am SO :D you stood your ground with dem folks!

I am also impressed :wow: by how fast YOUR particular journey has progressed, seemingly; with out a hitch in sight.

You  stepped out on faith, handled yourself with truth, dignity, intelligence, grace and professionalism.

You proved yourself to be a  true woman who is about business when handling her personal business.

Not only did you "GO GIRL ;) !"

You did "DA DAMN THANG B) !"

I salute  you and I pray it was all worth your fight :bonk: and that your marriage is destined for longevity and prosperity :star: .

    (F)

    awwww you flatter me :).

POE was nothin' but a thang!!! Less then 20 minutes and we were done!! Getting out of Senegal was a whole 'nother thing altogether. Every guard that could, questioned him, I'd finally had it with the last security check point and I gave the guy a look that could have killed him, he immediately shut up and stamped hubby passport. Maybe they were just jealous or looking for a "tip", I don't know.

  10. Hey all, alive and kickin' here. I'm back at work while hubby attempts to entertain himself at home. One disadvantage to living on an island - not a whole lot to do here. He is chompin' at the bit to find a job! We can't even get a simple ID card until he has his SSN. Washington State requires 4 documents to issue an ID card we have 3 (passport, visa and marriage certificate), the 4th can be SSN, original BC, foreign drivers license or current school transcript - we have none of those things. So we wait......

As for POE - EASY EASY EASY!! Less than 20 minutes at JFK. Although getting out of Senegal was a HUGE process - sheesh!!! EVERY single guard at the airport asked for SO's passport, I could have walked right by them. The final check point was entirely frustrating the man kept questioning my husband and examining his visa, it wasn't until I came up next to my husband (I went through a different security point) and looked at the man in a very upset and questioning manner that he quit talking and just stamped husbands passport. You know I kind of expected a bit of discrimination from US side but NEVER thought we would get it in his residential country. Like I said, everyone at JFK was great and quick!!

SO had a 21 hour layover in NY, I only had a 6 hour layover. We walked the route he would need to take to get to the right terminal a couple of times before I left. He did fabulous, arrived in Seattle with no problem at all. I brought my daughter with me to pick him up and she JUMPED outta of the truck and ran and hugged him. Shocked me because she has never met him before and she tends to be a bit shy. 3 of my 4 boys and my daughter in law greeted him with big hugs also. The 4th....well.... he'll come around. He shook his hand and has offered to show him the bus system here on the island. My grandson is coming around too, he's just 3 years old.

We have toured a little bit of the island together - he was very confused as to why on earth people in the US would EVER want to buy a rat or mouse to have as a pet. He said if he had known he would have rounded up several and brought them here to sell

  11. I just typed up our text messages. If I remember correctly you have been living there right?? You won't need to worry too much about establishing a relationship other than proof that you have been living there. The embassy in Dakar didn't even look at our emails or texts, or receipt. They only looked at a couple of pictures and then questioned us each individually. Even with a few non-matching answers given we were approved and picked up the visa today.
