  1. Moderators please move this to the right forum, if I posted it in the wrong one.

I became us citizen from GC holder through marriage with my US wife. I have been here for almost 15 years .

We had different kinds of marital problems thruout and recent I did a major mistake and now have ton of credit card bills and hospital bills. Our relationship will never be the same and if the condition goes worser, I may have to return to India. We file taxes jointly and I have applied for bankruptcy by my own .

I know it is $2350 to give away us citizenship and Indian OCI is          $ 275.

Anybody can give me a detail of the process ?? Would be greatly appreciated.

  2. Hi,

I am an us citizen. I am supposed to travel to India through quatar around March 15 and return around 25 th.

I am a little nervous about this in the recent political scenario with our President. As I am feeling another government shutdown can lead to airports shutdown.

I am not sure if I should cancel the ticket.

Any suggestions will be highly appreciated.

  3. Hi ,

I am a naturalized US citizen, vising India with my US wife. Apart from a credit card we may carry maximum $1000. what is the best way to carry it to India ? I do not have a NRI account ... I know about travellers cheque , but have no idea of how much is the fee to get one or how much is it to cash it in india... ANY OTHER FAST , EASIER METHOD ?

ALL ANSWERS WOULD BE APPRECIATED... Thanks

  4. So $178 is the cost for renunciation ? And $250+$178 to surrender? I am sorry i am quite not clear ... What is the difference ? I have not used the passport after becoming citizen. Thanks

  5. Hello all VJers,

I have recently become US citizen in Jan,2016. I just applied to get US passport and its is process. My plan is to get Indian tourist visa for me and my wife( US citizen by birth) as I have heard that it is cheaper and faster. My Indian passport was renewed couple years earlier and is valid till 2020. In this scenario I am trying to determine what would be the cost for the renunciation. These are the sources :

Indian consulate website says "Those who acquired foreign nationality after June 1, 2010 and their Indian passports were valid for more than 3 years at the time of acquiring the foreign nationality are liable to pay a penalty of US 250/- in addition to normal fee of US $ 178/-. Is this true ?

CKGS website has no info on the cost unless you fill in your US passport number in the form and proceed. I am still waiting on my US passport.

    Another source online says "Naturalized on or after June 1, 2010 - $178 + $12 = $190.

    1) Which is a correct fee in my situation ?

    2) As far as i have seen only photocopies of main documents are necessary for renunciation. Is this true ?

All help and suggestion would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

  6. Hello ,

First of all I am interested to know if you are applying based on 3 yrs or 5 yr rule ? Based on either one, the burden of evidences varies from case to case... My suggestion is to take as much as possible in the interview. The burden to show more evidences is lesser if you are applying based on 5 yrs. I did send in a lot just to be on the safe side.

Here is what I sent and took : LINK

Here is my Interview experience : LINK

Regarding your 5 yrs question I believe its last 5 yrs before interview or before the day you filled the N400 form...other members can correct me if I am wrong ...they will ask this question during your interview (5yrs before interview) and the oath ceremony ( if you have traveled outside US, in between interview and oath )

Hope this helps.... feel free to contact me , if you need you need more ... Other experienced members would help you more... Good luck and best wishes.

Moderators please adjust ...this is a double post.... other one at http://www.visajourney.com/forums/topic/583101-documentation-for-the-interview-what-to-bring/

    Thanks

  8. Congratulations!

They said they'd mail you the name change certificate?

That's quite unusual! It must be something your local office does. I hope you get it soon and congratulations again!

Thanks for the response! That's sounds like a reasonable way to do things.

Here in Houston it's a little different, the oath ceremony is also performered by a judge and also not at a court house, but the clerk brings all the name change certificates to the ceremony and attaches them to the naturalization certificates. So I guess it varries from court to court.

Thanks again for the information. I'm going to post a link to this on the main Name Change thread in the citizenship forum.

Hello JimmyHou , my name change letter just came ...in 5 days after Oath. Came from Office of Clerk - United States District Court. They made me sign this paper during the naturalization interview. So basically its a Homeland Security paper, was signed by me during interview and then signed and stamped by my city court clerk and sent to me. Just an update as i promised. Thanks

Hi JimmyHou, yes thats what the court clerk told me .... and she also said it would take around 3 days ....but I also found this http://www.visajourney.com/forums/topic/461212-name-changed-at-naturalization-did-not-receive-the-name-change-certificate-court-order/

If you go down to member mrs.sr, , she says "

Received the name change certificate today, 15 days after the oath ceremony.

FYI, Since the oath ceremony was not at the court house( but performed by a judge), USCIS sends the name change petition to the court house. The court house then records the name change, signs it and sends it back to USCIS. USCIS then mails the copy to us. Hence the delay.

You can always request a certified copy from the court house. It's is $11 here in Milwaukee, Wisconsin"

Interesting concept ... I will update as soon my letter arrives... Thanks so much... Thanks Kerrin, M.A.C & paribest.

  10. well I already passed my citizenship interview and headed to my oath ceremony , if you read my timeline. Once you get your citizenship certificate, you can apply for US passport. Once you get that , you renounce your indian citizenship with the original indian passport and copy of your US passport. Thats how it goes at least for indian passport. Hope this helps

  11. Hello ,

Almost everyone is confused on this question... The first clue is Part 11 question number 4 - " do you now have or did you ever have ....." Ususally for everyone the answer is NO. So if its No then leave 53 blank and part 16 blank too.

And it says of the form to leave part 15,16,17 blank and not to complete unless instructed during the interview. Hope this helps. Best wishes

  12. Hello all,

Wanted to post my interview experience today at Cincinnati. I applied based on 5 year permanent residency and got my Permanent residency through marriage with an USC. I reached there about 10 mins before interview. there were some road constructions. I has to wait to for about 20-25 minutes after checking in but they were backed up a little and I needed a little rest to myself too  . The IO was very down to earth and asked me to put my belongings down as he put me to a oath. After checking my Green card and passport , He asked me these as follows :

    a)my Name

    b) My date of birth

    c) My address

    d) my phone number

    e) about if I have any children

    f) went fast through the several YES or NO questions making me answer

    g) asked a little about my employment, my wife`s profession and if I had any children.

He was very sure about my selective service non eligibility and though I was ready with my letter , didn't want it. Then he straight away went to he reading section and wanted me to read a line and dictated a line , which was piece of cake. Then he courteously went to the civics question. I answered the first 6 right and passed it ... I had a name change ..he asked me whether I still want it and made me sign a paper and directly gave the date and time of the oath ceremony on a a paper.... told me to take passport and green card to oath ceremony. Also gave me the paper saying I passed and recommended for approval. He asked me no original of what I had sumitted as evidence apart from my passport, green card and my state driving license.

It was less than 25 mins for the whole process and I have my oath ceremony by this week too . Very down to earth and best IO I have ever seen.

Very nice experience...thought someone may benefit from this... I would be open to private messages and questions if some one has any .. This is link to my earlier post ...it will show you what I submitted as evidence
