I think this is something that must be generational, because none of the FSU women I know around my age would react the way Alla did--except for maybe the thing about paying on the date.
I have a friend who was being sexually harassed on her job on a regular basis (making suggestive comments, grabbing her boobs, etc.), and it was making her very upset. I think her boyfriend went down to her job and threatened the guy. When we were discussing it, everyone was saying "No, this is not okay, you should not put up with it and should file an official complaint."
Sexual harassment, rape, etc. aren't about a woman still having "it." It is a way of saying that women don't have agency over their own bodies. It is about power. Someone who was sincerely interested in a woman would NOT just grab her boobs as a way of hitting on her, and any woman who took that guy seriously as a romantic interest would need to have her head examined.

Lighten up about what? Maybe you'd have to be a woman to understand, but it is no way a subject deserving of levity, or "I want to fly to RUB so I can grab woman's breasts/asses with impunity and no fear of retaliation because, hey, they're cool with it over there."

If the world economy is on its way to collapse, it's because of all of the deregulation and lack of oversight. Keep electing people who want to just let the market go without any kind of supervision at all, and that's what you get.

Why are you bringing this up when it is not relevant to the discussion at hand?
LvivLovers... "Parents will pay more..." which parents? My parents were wealthy, I went to expensive private schools my whole life, and there were some scholarship programs for talented students, but I don't think that privatizing education is the answer. I think that EVERYONE should have access to a decent education, regardless of their parents' net worth. If we had spent what we spent on the Iraq and Afghan Wars on education and healthcare, we'd be halfway there.

It was brought up, but not scrutinized. I would bet that a good 85% or higher of the population is unaware of that fact.
People choosing based on sex, race, etc. is not something that is conscious. And yes, hegemony is basically found in every society. Hegemony comes into play when people go, "THIS IS AMERICA--SPEAK ENGLISH," how female candidates' looks are scrutinized and how strong, powerful women are considered "bitches," how fashion magazines won't put in too many black models lest the publication be considered a "black" magazine. Too many white models won't turn a magazine into a non-mainstream publication. You can have a few black/other minorities and women in power, but not too many. That would be Threatening.
And the Tea Party is basically a tool for billionaires to continue to get what they want and to complete the conversion of America to a plutocracy. Grassroots movement my @$$.

Why isn't "the norm" ok? it's not slang. It means "standard or model." You WANT writing to be idiomatic. You should avoid cliches and non-standard English, but "the norm" is absolutely fine in a university-level essay.
