    I highly recommend renewing his British passport. I believe it can be done online, very easily. He wouldn't be able to visit UK on US passport. Also, as the time passes, renewing expired passport may pose different challenges.

    You're quoting things related to maintaining continuous residence. What you forget is marital union requirement because you're applying on 3 year rule. Quite a few officers interpret that strictly and if you had a trip for few months without your spouse, they'd deny based on breaking marital union.
