That's interesting.  They specifically told my wife at the oath to sign the certificate the exact way it was signed on the picture.  I tried to tell her to sign it exactly as it appears, but she was scared straight by USCIS employee at the Oath.

    I guess we'll find out.

I signed mine with first and middle initial. Same signature since childhood, I have NEVER signed my full name!!

    Hi Everyone,

I became a citizen about few months ago, and coming to update the SSN.

    Questions

    a) Do I get to keep the same number? (may be silly question and would think so, but being here for 10 years and suddenly changing the number seems like it'd be.. weird?)

    b) Can I do this process in person? I do have a passport card, but I'd prefer if it I could do it in person instead of mailing everything

    c) Is this the form I have to fill? https://www.ssa.gov/forms/ss-5.pdf

    Thank you!!

A, Yes, that number is for LIFE!!

B, Call the office, SSA will let you make an appointment if you state you refuse to send sensitive documents in the mail

C, Correct, Make sure your name and SS# is correct, also City of birth is important, must be the same as originally stated.

I said Brussels, but my parents when they got my green card, stated Uccle, which is technically a suburb of Brussels.

Really no more online appointment ? So how can you apply now your PP.. I read somewhere they don’t accept third party as the queue was backlog. I hope to anyone in need their PP they will get it. Good luck to you.

If you are not in an emergency, do it the old fashioned way, go to a Post Office, and apply.

    Dont worry, you are fine.

    Few reasons:

    2) USCIS updates Social Security department with your new Citizenship status, it takes time to get this update to happen into the Social Security Records.

    They DO NOT.

It must be done by the NEW citizen.

To verify if SSA knows you're a citizen, create an account at SSA, request replacement card.

If your records have not been updated, a message will tell you to do it in person.

If you are confirmed as a citizen, it will let you apply online.

Even though it's ugly, i would much prefer having the hard material for the bio page like Russian and Czech passports have. It's so much more sensible. That way the page won't rip/fall apart if for some reason it gets torn or damaged.

Does anyone know if these are the passports they're issuing right now? Or is everyone still getting the old ones with the floppy pages?

They started issuing, but the printer facility is random. You might or might not get one at this time.

They can ask for a Costco card, a Sam’s card, and a BJ’s card too if they want.

There is no requirement a US LPR or citizen or national hold a state ID.  And since state IDs aren’t free, such a requirement would infringe the 5th amendment.

Prediction: OP will experience at most some grumbling about not having state ID and will be approved.

    5th amendment???

As mentioned by @NEW CITIZEN, once you are a U.S. citizen, you are a U.S. citizen, regardless of whether your status has been updated. If not updated in time while you start to claim your benefits, you will just get back payments. So it's just administrative headache, but nothing really serious. Bottomline is, of course, update as soon as you can or it is convenient for you.

With regards to claiming benefits, I believe as a U.S. citizen, you can receive your benefits if you live abroad in the very vast majority of countries aside from Cuba, North Korea etc...

    See:

    https://www.ssa.gov/pubs/EN-05-10137.pdf

You can claim and receive benefits as a non-citizen, as long as you still have residency in the US.

However, my wife enlightened me that if something should happen, you won’t be able to claim Social Security benefits.

    Not exactly true.

You are eligible for SS benefits as long as you have contributed enough quarter.

The catch is you can not retire in another country, and receive benefits US SSA benefits as a non /resident citizen.

You would need to return to the US and live here 6 months and 1 day before returning.

Make a call to your local SSA office, ask for an appointment to show documents, if they refuse,  you cant tell them you refuse to risk mailing.

They need to oblige your request.

"The agency is working to bring its workforce, which is less than 200 people, back to offices in-person."

The workforce still at home is less than 200, the offices have been almost fully staffed 80% returned a year ago. (Phase Two)

They want to bring the last 200 back to the offices. (Phase Three)

Trump had the agency  lay off 200 people in 2017, that was stated to be a 14% reduction.

    NOW do the math!!!

to be honest i think they are wrong because the primary i.d. should be the certificate of naturalization and then the secondary I.D. should be the out-of-state drivers license. I think the passport acceptance clerk was clueless and nasty which sucks because now my wife's passport will have a different date than the rest of our kids.

Heres the official request for ID

Notice the "In-state " for DL

But the CN should be enough

You must present one of the following identification documents (IDs) to the acceptance agent. The ID must readily identify you.

    • Valid or expired, undamaged U.S. passport book or passport card
    • In-state, fully valid driver's license or enhanced driver's license with photo
    • Certificate of Naturalization
    • Certificate of Citizenship
    • Government employee ID (city, county, state, or federal)
    • U.S. military or military dependent ID
    • Current (valid) foreign passport
    • Matricula Consular (Mexican Consular ID) - commonly used by a parent of a U.S. citizen child applicant
    • U.S. Permanent Resident Card (Green Card) - commonly used by a parent of a U.S. citizen child applicant
    • Trusted Traveler IDs (including valid Global Entry, FAST, SENTRI, and NEXUS cards)
    • Enhanced Tribal Cards and Native American tribal photo IDs
    • Other documents: 1) In-state, fully-valid learner's permit with photo, 2) In-state, fully-valid non-driver ID with photo, or 3) temporary driver's license with photo. Note: you may be asked to present an additional ID when presenting one of these three documents.

    Applying Out of State

If you apply out of state, please present an additional ID. It should show as much of the following information as possible: your photo, full name, date of birth, and the document issuance date.
