1. This family member was my mother-in-law who is 72 years old and the location is Lagos, Nigeria, where you don't give out personal information about someone else unless you know who you are speaking to and why they want to know. The lady investigator for the embassy greeted her and asked her if she was the mother of my husband and she replied yes, hope there is no problem? The investigator never bothered to identify herself as being from the embassy. That is when the investigator said, "Madam just answer my questions." My mother-in-law told her no because she would not identify herself. So the investigator left. She later found out from her youngest son, who had already been interviewed by the lady, that this was a lady from the embassy, so my mother-in-law ran after her and said that I don't know who you are, but I can testify to the fact that my son is happily married, but the lady investigator would not acknowledge her after that. Just got in her car and left. I feel that to be an unfair investigation. In my opinion, if you are going to do an interview, you should identify who you are and why you are there asking questions. If feel this to be an unfair investigation. That is why I wondered who I should go to to complain about their fraud department in the embassy in Nigeria. My mother-in-law is very upset and feels that she ruined our chances for my husband to come to the USA all because the lady wouldn't identify herself.

She had told my husband that she was afraid because the lady was so rude to her and refused to identify herself. She told my husband that she did not want to give out his personal information without knowing who she was talking to and why she wanted to know. Had she identified herself, she would have had no problem. What you don't know is that police in Lagos, Nigeria, are not anywhere in the league of American police. They are very corrupt. They will do anything and say anything for a bribe. They are never to be trusted. They don't serve and protect like American police. In Lagos, you have to be careful who you are talking to and why they want to know something.

If someone came to my home and started asking a lot of questions without identifying themselves, I would have the same reaction as her.

My big concern would be why would they refused to answer questions because she thought it was a Police woman. That would send up red flags to any investigator. That speaking from 26 working as a police officer.
2. Hello All,

I am in need of help. I would like to ask who to complain to when an embassy official did a field interview of a family member and did not identify themselves, so the family member refused to answer questions because the investigator acted as though she was a policewoman. The embassy investigator walked away and the family member then later found out from her youngest son that this was a lady from the embassy. She then ran after the investigator and said that I don't know who you are, but I can state the fact that my son is happily married, but the investigator refused to listen to her then and just drove away.

My question is should I complain to the Department of State? Isn't DOS over the embassies?

Thanks,

Deb

4. What a story! Definitely believable though with all that goes on now. It is very interesting that they asked why the neighbors didn't know. But I only have stories about Nigeria, so I'm not sure what it's really like. Obviously, it's dangerous once people believe you will be leaving for America. They will take your life before they see you prosper. I think Bassi's whole neighborhood knew about me before they even met me. He lives in a close muslim community in Ghana. The neighbors are the family, the tribe. So, it's not like talking to strangers. Just keep praying and hopefully this will come to an end soon. I still say, all that we are going through to get our SOs home, build a much much stronger relationship in many cases.

Yes, you are exactly correct. I believe I read not too long ago in this forum where the beneficiary was followed from the embassy by the Lagos police after he had just received his visa and brown envelope. They stopped him and beat him up a bit and asked for a bribe or they would open his brown packet which is not to be opened except at the POE by immigration officials. He had no money, so he called his brother to come with money. They luckily gave back his brown envelope and passport without opening it, but you get the point. In Lagos, you tell no one about having an interview or getting a visa until you are on the plane because there are always those who will do harm to you because of it. My husband's close friends and of course his family know of our marriage and I am known to all those who need to know. You have to be extremely careful who you tell your business to in Lagos. This family interview should be the end of what they need besides document verification. That is just about all they CAN do as far as investigating the bonefide's of a marriage.

Thanks for commenting.

5. My husband and I have been on AP since August 12, 2008. I was present for the interview and was interviewed the same day as my husband as I was scheduled to leave the next day to go home. I, too, was interviewed by one of the local Nigerian fraud investigators, a lady. Though she tried to be a bit of a know-it-all and treated me as a victim of my own husband, for the most part she was civil with me. She and her colleague were downright rude and obnoxious when it came to my husband though. He was accused of using me for immigration purposes and that he was lying, he didn't love me. He got so angry that he quit answering their questions. She then came and told me that she was going to go in and tell him he was not getting a visa today as I told her that I wanted to move to Nigeria just to see what his reaction would be. He promptly replied that if that is what she wants to do, then it is perfectly fine with him. He just wants me to be happy, so all their efforts to trip him up failed.

I told her that we had made plans long before we got to the interview stage to live together in Nigeria because the visa process was so long, so if he was trying to hide children or wives, I would think he would not have agreed for us to get a house together in Nigeria. Nobody could hide a family for that long (as we didn't know how long the process would be), which it ended up taking eight months from filing the petition to interview time. I told her I had already done my own investigating of him on a year before I agreed to marry him as I wanted to be sure myself. I didn't marry him until my second visit to Nigeria. I wanted to meet him in person first and check out everything he had told me to make sure everything checked out that he told me which it did in time. This all took place for one year before marriage, then I agreed to marry him after that, so we married on my next trip to Nigeria one year later and then filed a few months later for I-130 and K3. The lady investigator gave me her email address and told me to give him a month after telling him that I wanted to move to Nigeria instead since they refused to give him a visa and see if his communication with me decreases or he stops calling you, then you will have your answer as to whether he is using you for a benefit or if he truly loves you. Email her in one month with the results. I never had to tell him I wanted to move to Nigeria. After the interview, he was so upset about the outcome of the interview, he told me he wanted me to move to Nigeria and that he would start work on finding us a house in Nigeria after I went home. He did just that too. Within a month, he had found several houses in several areas of Lagos and asked me to pick so he could pay for it and get me there as soon as possible. I forwarded his email to the investigating officer. Do you think she believed it? No, she thought it was written for the embassy's benefit. LOL! I told her that she had asked me to keep it to myself what she was doing which I did, and then when it turns out he is proving his love yet again, then it can only be for the embassy's benefit? I asked her why did you ask me to do this when you never planned on believing me anyway? And I told her that I now wondered how biased her investigation would be. She then wrote back and said that we both did as agreed and that there would be no need for any further emails and that if I liked, she could hand over the case to one of her colleagues.

Anyway, I can't believe they worked this quickly. Today is a Muslim holiday, El Fitri, and the embassy is closed for the next two days, but she showed up at my husband's family's home to do a field interview today. This is only slightly over two months since the interview and she is already investigating. Not that I'm complaining as that means it's almost over, but I have never seen this embassy work this quickly to get an investigation done. She first asked questions of his mother's neighbors about whether they were aware of our marriage. None of them were aware of it. This doesn't surprise me because some families are private and they don't share all info about their families to everyone. Now mind you, she was accusing my husband of using me, but yet, the only questions asked of his little brother and his mother were if they were aware of our marriage. They both answered yes they were. The lady investigator then asked if they were aware of the marriage, why is it that none of the neighbors know anything about it? Both his brother and his mother said that this is not something that they shout in the streets, it is family matter and therfore private information. There were no questions asked about whether he had children or a wife prior to me which he doesn't, just that. She then said she was finished with her investigation and he would be hearing from the embassy shortly. My question is what difference does it make how much noise was made about our marriage as it was to make sure that he doesn't have a hidden wife and children and that the marriage is valid and his family is aware of it and approves? Who cares if the neighbors know about it or not? If you start shouting out to everyone in Lagos that you are married to an American, there will be some that will not want to see your happiness, but rather your downfall. There will also be those that will have their hand out as well because if you are married to an American, you surely have money because all Americans are perceived as rich in Nigeria, so therefore, you keep your business to yourself there. I don't see one thing wrong with the neighbors not being aware of our marriage.

I had gotten my senator involved, but I am not sure if this was a help or not at this piont. I am not sure if this is why they were out trying to finish the investigation or not. I had read somewhere by a former employee of the Lagos embassy that if they have to pull your file to answer a congressional inquiry that they just go on and do the investigation to satisfy the congressional inquiry, but I have not heard a reply from my senator except that he was going to make an inquire on my behalf. I have never heard about the outcome of his inquiry. I hope this means that he will be contacted soon to come back for a 2nd interview. I thought we would be waiting much longer than this, but I am happy that it is finally going to be over soon, I hope!

Good luck to anyone else still waiting on AP.

6. Hello omogenaija,

The answer is no, Nigeria does not do DCF filing as of 2003.

Best of luck to you,

Hello all,

I am new to this website and I have been reading a lot about the process and all the new terms.I am a US citizen presently leaving in Nigeria with my Nigerian husband.I want to find out if we can do the Direct consular Filing at the US embassy in Nigeria to bring him back to the Sates with me?. I couldn't find any info about that on the US embassy in Nigeria but I did find it on US embassy in Cameroon. Can I go to Cameroon to file if not accepted in Nigeria?.Please, help me out guys. I need ur best advice on this. We can move to any african country and spend some time there until we can file if not in Nigeria. By the way, I was born in Nigeria and have my dual citizenship( also my Nigerian passport),and I have been living in the US since I was 7. I just moved back to Nigeria about 6 months ago. Please,VJ members help me out.

7. Thanks urge and edp!!! I'm very happy of course. I was a little late coming into this thread, I guess I'll be a wee bit behind meeting up with you guys in the AOS forum. Omgosh I really need ya'll there! I have done very little research on that one!

EDP YAYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYY i'm so happy she's finally coming home to you!

Kathryn,

I am sooooooooo happy for you! I am sorry, however, that Lanre had to endure such a long, grueling interview. God I hope that doesn't happen to Mike. As you know, he applied for 2 visitor's visas, but I don't think there is much that they can grill him on, since in Lagos, the only questions asked were who I was and what did he do for a living, and in Abuja, they again asked who I was and what he did for a living, and was I present. Neither one lasted more than 2-3 minutes, so maybe we will be okay. Anyway, finally it is over after all these years for you 2. Now you can start your family home together.

Congratulations!!!!!

Love,

Deb

8. Thanks wintime and divinemercy. I am floating over here. We made it home Friday night... finally. Yes, Kathryn, the last couple of months did go by fast. Once I started preparing for my wife's potential arrival (new furniture, cleaning, other chores) the time really flew. God willing, you will have great news to share in 2 days!!

For me, today I start filling out the AOS forms (I have to jump over that the AOS forum and see if our gang has a thread going over there). We are still waiting for Kelly and gogo to finish off this thread. We have waited so long, I bet there are fresh April 2008 filers who pop in here thinking this is a new thread for their cohorts, only to realize some of us have waited for 1 year+. It really is time to retire this thread.

:dance:Congratulations Urge, this is a happy news

Kelly will be right along after June 2. That is my husband's interview date. I am going to Nigeria to support him. Will be leaving May 28 and returning June 4. The habit has been of late that they pick up their visa 7 days after their interview. My husband's is on a Monday, so I assume he will be picking his up the following Monday. There has been a surprising amount of approvals coming out of Lagos lately, so maybe it won't be as bas as I thought. We are very prepared, and they do look at organization of data as well as the interviewee's demeanor, so we should be fine. I will let everyone know how things went either while still in Nigeria or when I return.

I agree that this thread needs to die. After me, Gogo is the only one left. I wish him Godspeed and good luck.

9. Since you are in AP you do not need to worry about the expiration of the I-129F, they will automatically extend the validity.

I didn't know about this. Now I wonder if I should attempt to extend the I-129F validity date? My husband's interview is June 2, but our petition expires May 8. Should I be doing something about getting the date extended? If so, how and where do I do this?

Thanks for you help,

Deb

10.:dance: CONGRATULATIONS URGE!!!! HURRY AND GET YOUR WIFE HOME!!!!:dance:

Wuhoo. Great news guys! Layla's visa was approved!!!

We got a token to come back to the Embassy to pick up the passport w/ Visa tomorrow at 2PM. Heading over to try to book a ticket back home for her! I am flying back Friday, hopefully with her. I won't be totally relieved til we have it in hand (the interviewer ominously said she could pick up her visa if the computer system doesn't malfunction and fail to print the visa).

Will post more details on the interview later.

K-3 INTERVIEW IN JORDAN

FINALLY THAT DAY CAME..FINALLY CROSSED THAT BRIDGE..

Thank you Lord.. Thank you Soo much!! Thank you to all of you who helped us thus far! Thank you for your support!

Ok.. I haven't had much rest yet..but here's how it went. (Im sure my husband will share more as soon as he's rested)

Ahmads appt was set for 7:30am...but as usual we knew it was all about arriving early and then wait..but most important be on time and prepared. So there he is looking like he's ready to move into one of their offices with all his required docs and "supporting evidence". There were a few others there..but they had only a folder or two. This made some of them a little nervous thinking maybe they were supposed to bring more..but for some it just depended on what their exact purpose was for being there.

His first interview was with a woman. She asked him only a few questions. For starters she asked "how did you meet?". He told her how and what circumstances led to our meeting online. This brought up my son marrying an arabic woman..which in turn brought up the age questions -My sons, Ahmads and mine. This question gave Ahmad opportunity to share more about our sincere love and the building up of our relationship. She asked what his parents thought of me (and our relationship). With these questions he offered to show pictures, emails, phone records etc..(which was located in his "luggage" file- 1 large/2 small) She said no..don't need to ..just show some pics. Ahmad said he had so many here due to 3 celebrations/2 visits to Jordan. She said just a few is fine. He brought out a few pix of us together and also me with his parents and family. She asked "When did you see her last?" . He answered with exact dates and time periods She seemed very interested and pleased with the photos..in which her tone and reaction changed greatly when she who I was and how the pics showed my relationship with him & his family (very close/ the pix don't lie). She did ask if he had a copy of the visa stamp in my passport of my visit.. he said he didn't have it but had my boarding pass/luggage tags etc as proof and offered it. She said no..its ok..don't need it. Then she said ok.. I believe you. Now the only thing that would need to be done is to wait outside and the next interviewer would call him..then they would need to get one last security check..after this his passport would be stamped. She was very pleasant and Ahmad felt that if she felt something was wrong or missing that she would tell him.

The next interview took place a few minutes after he left her. He met with a man. As he walked in with his "mini" file suitcase ensemble... The man said "Whoa!!.. ok ok..I believe you!! (smiling and jesting with him as he looked at all of what Ahmad carried). Ahmad smiled... remained calm and ready. He was asked to show all docs I-134 and supporting docs. I had this set up in a presentation folder. Ahmad had one- Sponsor "me"..and another folder- Co-sponsor "my dad". The interviewer was impressed bc I also included 2007 tax papers (W-2s/Form 1040- no 2007 transcript). Also I included 2004-2006 transcripts/W-2's. Other documents to support information given on I-134 (employee verif/recent paystubs ....). He took mostly everything from those folders and viewed his screen and said that Ahmad had everythign they asked for and more and this was good. He said this was the end of process..All was completed and acceptable..but they had to follow thru with sending it for one more check. Ahmad questioned "What should I tell my wife about this interview?" He was then told " all is good and completed..just would need to wait for last check (if all is clear), then request for him to send in passport..then it would be stamped with visa. Ahmad continued to ask about how long bc this has been so hard on us..the waiting and being apart..and this is why I had to come back to visit again. The man said that it says up to 3 months..but it could be much much faster and not to worry because everything looked good and it was just a procedure that had to do now.

Note: You may not be asked alot of questions or need to show all supporting evidence of your communication or closeness ..but it's better to have more than less. You never know what they will ask for or what questions they will ask. Having pictures available are just as important..a picture and first impression says alot more than you could ever.

Soooooooooooo... now we wait again. But thank God for bringing us this far..and never leaving us..I know He will see us through all the way..and if we do our best to try to stay focused and teachable, we will gain so much more as God perfects our love and our lives much much more than we could ever imagine. Thank you Lord!!

14. Thanks PKewl! How is your wife enjoying living in our country? I wish you many years of wedded bliss!

Deb

Hi Deb..

My wife likes it here and is enjoying. Since we are still waiting for her AOS/EAD, she feels kinda bored at times but we both are just very happy and grateful to be living together.

Hang in there... You are almost there. Good Luck.

Regards.

Thanks PKewl! I have taken vacation this week to prepare for his interview and have everything ready and together, so when I go back to work next week, there won't be anything to do but wait for the interview. My husband is working on the police certificate and medical, so we will be prepared for D-day...or should I say V-day, LOL

Good luck on getting ur AOS/EAD. I am so happy for both of you!

Deb

15. Hi Lurking,

Thanks for the advise. I have already taken your advise and looked at the embassy information. I am preparing for the interview as I speak. He is understandably nervous, but I keep reassuring him that everything will be fine and to just speak from the heart. That seems to help. Good luck with your journey.

Deb

Hello Kelly,

What an amazing feeling. My CR1 should be complete this week. Make sure you review the embassy information. I found it helpful. Your love and devotion will shine through in everyone one of his answers.

Hello Lurking,

My husband just came from the embassy today and his interview date is June 2. You can add that to your chart.

Thanks,

Deb from "Adewunmi and Deb"
