  1. Most likely you'll be getting more money back when filing as "married"

    Let's hope so

You do!! My husband changed his status to married at work, and he saw a $62 increase per paycheque!! It was sure nice to start having that extra money in our account! If you don't change it with your employer, I am sure you'll just end up getting it back with your tax return at the end of the year, but I prefer to have the money now to help out with expenses, especially because we're on one income!

  2. Wow, thanks guys! I was rushing around like mad yesterday before coming to Montreal and I didn't log into the forums at all. Brian just pointed me in this direction!

There is good news! I was approved about 45 minutes ago :D :D I'll write up a more detailed report once I'm back in Oakville.

Thanks again for all the well wishes!

Hey! You're from Oakville! I am from Mississauga :)

Even better, I am currently living in Cincinnati...a mere hour's drive from Columbus! Best of luck with the move to Columbus, and let me know if you're ever interested in meeting up!

  4. Hi guys, this is a great forum and it has answered a huge number of questions for my girlfriend and I. We have currently not filed any paperwork to start the visa process but we intend to do so. She and I met in Boston and we have both traveled to and from Canada and the States mostly via airplane. We had done a trip together to Canada from the states on train and had no problems, never had any problems with customs at airports either. I am about to drive to see her in Ontario, my first time driving across the border, and then I am going to pick her up and bring her back to the states for about a week, then bring her back home. As she is a foreign national (and my girlfriend) I am curious if customs will give us any trouble if we are traveling together?

If anyone has any experience with this prior to applying for a fiance visa I would love to hear it. I think I am going to bring proof of my ties to the US either way. She says I am just paranoid but you never know!

    Thanks in advance.

For sure bring your ties to the U.S...but don't forget for HER to bring ties to Canada. I was pulled into Secondary questioning and ultimately was denied entry into the U.S. because I didn't bring paperwork showing ties to Canada. I was crossing with my then-fiance. It's a good idea to be prepared- you wouldn't want to get into that mess with CBP. It's awful! Just answer their questions directly and honestly, don't offer any information they don't ask for, and be prepared to show evidence if they ask. Good luck! Chances are, you'll be fine.

  5. Tell me about it. Planning a wedding on each coast with a Chinese mother and a Jewish mother-in-law is a world of interesting in itself. ;)

My sister had the same problem. What they ended up doing was 2 receptions... a big Portugese one the night of the wedding and then a big Chinese banquet the week after. They could not get married in her (now ex) husband's church though as she's not Catholic so they did the ceremony at a Unitarian church.

I, on the other hand, had none of that. Got married on a visit, no witnesses, nothing. I didn't even dress up. :D

I'm quite tempted to tell both of them that we're eloping on a sunny island somewhere in the Caribbean. The hassle of two weddings is silly. :D

If I learned anything from my experience- it would be don't give in to others' wishes!! Make sure you follow your heart and do what makes you & your FH happy first! If your family loves you (which they do!) they will support your decisions!

  6. I'll start:

    - zyggy

    - riblet

    - our mao

    - mercy

    - bebop + rocksteady

Seems like everyone abandons this place when they get their visas. *sniff sniff*

I'll be sticking around after I get my GC. I don't have any friends here IRL!

Lol, I'll be sticking around too! Friends are definitely hard to come by right now...

Ya, where is zyggy? He was around a ton back in March...

  7. I'm confused - when do I go back?

My husband seems to be having a good first day (so far) so I'm happy. He's so glad to be out of the house and earning money too - and what woman doesn't agree? hahaha

    Thanks everyone!

No news Jess? (btw: she shouldn't have to wait more than 90 days so she is right for being concerned).

Congrats to Mr. Arazia!! It's nice to have a husband who can drive.

You're a teacher, right? Classes normally start around this time of year...

  8. If he were to get stopped, ICE should be able to verify his status relatively quickly. If he has an SSN, it may not hurt to carry around a photocopy of that card as well. Copy of the AOS NOA1 may be a good idea too (if us late July filers ever get one

I was always told not to do that as identity thieves relish finding a social security card that they can use - all it takes is the person to lose their wallet or get robbed, and the valid social (even a copy) is enough for the thieves to "become" you

I might be wrong but I personally would not recommend it.

I never carry my SSN around for that reason...even carrying around a NOA is sketchy because your A # is on it. It's so hard...do you NOT carry it around to protect your identity and risk getting harassed about your status...or do you carry it and risk getting it stolen? Ahh...I am such a worrywort :(

  9. a milk and a sugar in my virtual tea please!

I will take milk...but do you have any splenda...i am on a no sugar diet hahahah

I have plenty of Splenda courtesy of Costco...so you should be very happy!

Isnt Costco in the US so much better! I love Costco...Maybe you can buy a third set of china from costco...and get 4% cashback

I love Costco- we get everything there, no word of a lie. We've recently made a rule to stop going there because we were spending too much money!!

I KNOW! Once me and my mom went to buy omega 3 eggs...and we left with 2 swarovski crystals and a laptop LOL hahahah its a killer. especially when u walk byy the clothes section and the purses.

OMG, now that's hilarious. Usually we go and we end up with house stuff...one time we found a chandelier, another time a rug, then an air compressor...my husband always gets lured in by the tools. The worst is when they run the coupons...I always stock up and so much money is tied up in products sitting in the basement. I call it The Bank of Costco. At least you can get your "deposit" back at any time with their awesome return policy!

  10. No reason you can't use your china just for yourself every now and again. I did not register the first time around, and likely won't this time either (we are combining two households after all!), but I have inherited the china set my grandmother got as a wedding gift in 1935. I can't imagine that I am EVER going to have any reason to use service for 12, so I figured why wait for an occasion that may or may not ever come up.

I bet your grandmother's china set is absolutely beautiful! That is definitely something worth cherishing.

  11. I understand that K1s are kind of in limbo as far as legal presence goes while their AOS is pending. We've come to terms with the difficulty of getting a DL, state ID, health insurance, etc.

However, my concern is that my husband fits the profile of an illegal alien perfectly and he's sooo worried about being stops by ICE. Will immigration enforcement officials understand the subtle distinction, especially of a Mexican national living in a community with many illegally present Mexican nationals? I'm just concerned because enforcement is on the rise, raids and traffic stops are more frequent, etc.

If we get stopped and asked for documentation, I'm worried that the K1 visa in his passport and a soon-to-be expired I94 may not be sufficient for them to not give us hell.

He's worried to go out by himself because of this.

I always carry around a copy of my NOA1 for AOS, a copy of my K1 and I-94, and copy of my biographical page of my passport. It's in my wallet at all times just in case I get asked. As long as he has the proper documentation and he is "in status," then he should have nothing to worry about.

I totally can relate though, I am very paranoid about it, particularly because I am still driving on a Canadian license. They wouldn't allow me to get an American one because I don't have a GC or EAD!

  13. Most likely Passport Services will want the entire passport intact when I mail it to them for renewal, since it won't be expired by the time I'll send my application out for a new passport. -_-

I guess my dilemma is now making sure that I get a new passport in time for AP, and deciding on the best effective time to get it renewed. Luckily I have a guarantor who can sign the photos for me, but I hate the thought of mailing out for my passport, since I've always been able to do it in person at Sinclair Centre downtown. Would it be safe to say that I should mail it out immediately after I file for AOS then?

Also, I thought the I-94 was a separate card and not actually stickied to a page of the passport, like the K1 visa?

If you're going to be in Canada for any length of time (in March) it may be a thought to drop into a passport office in person during your visit.

The I-94 is a separate card, however they also stamp and enter information directly onto the page behind it in your passport.

I think that it's a great idea to drop into an office early one morning if you're going to be up there. All they do with your old passport is cancel it- they give it back to you right then. I bet you processing is faster if you go in person rather than mail it in from the U.S.

Good luck!! Mine doesn't expire until 2009 but I want to get my married name on there, so I am going through the same dilemma as you. I've determined that I am going to do it in person once I get AP.

  14. Again, thanks y'all... I am going through the instructions with heart thumping at 500000 beats per/sec. It's so darned detailed that it makes me think: "If you applicant fkkkk up, you deserve it" when it comes to following the instructions.... adds to my usual insanity. I am nervous like never before.

And we're moving to Seattle Jashley, god willing ;)

I've heard seattle is wonderful, good luck!

I was asking because I am hoping some VJers come to Cincinnati :). I need some friends, lol!

    Congrats :)

  16. My first shower was in the party room of a nursing home, lol! My mom is a director there, and it was a really cool room. We had finger foods, punch, cookies, cake, and about 40 people...it was really cute & fun.

My second one was at my in-laws' house, but hosted by a family friend...that one also had finger foods, etc...they both were very beautiful and touching.

I had 5 bridesmaids and I thought that was hard to manage!! I couldn't imagine 14!! I couldn't keep everyone happy, no matter how hard I tried.

As for my china...oh boy do I want to use it...but I haven't had the opportunity! To add to it, I just got another pretty china set from my mother-in-law as a random gift! It's more intended for tea parties or luncheons...but I don't know anyone here!! Ahhhhhh!! How am I supposed to have a luncheon, lol??

We can have a virtual tea party/luncheon with all of our wedding gifts hahahaha.

    Sounds great :)
