  1. I've checked out cheapair too and they seemed to have reasonable prices when I went about this same time last year. Depending on where you live, you can get good prices from New york Washington, or Boston...check this site out...www.bt-store.com/ .

  2. I'm sorry to hear about your friend. Yeah, it is a sad case over there. My fiance had lots of bouts of Malaria and he had it so much that when he gets it, it doesn't last long for him, thankfully. He had an appendectomy a couple months ago and has been having difficulty with his tummy ever since. I just wonder what type of care he was given, seeing that the medical care over there is poor, especially when one doesn't have the money for sufficient first class doctor care. I am thankful though that his mom is a nurse. My fiance also said that while he was in hospital, he literally watched a man die next to him because his family couldn't afford health costs. He said that he had to watch the man suffer miserably in pain and crying. He couldn't do anything to comfort the guy because he was bedridden himself. I was almost in tears. I look on the bright side and just keep telling myself, that he will be here, then he will have the best medical care and attention.

  3. I have an unique situation. My husband was born and raised in Nigeria but he lived in Canada for 10 years. Canada is very identical to the US. My husband worked and struggled in Canada. He understands how the system works here.

It is funny to hear Southern Chic because my husband has a dream of owning a business and being rich. I stand behind my husband but I have continiously explained that the business world is different in the US than Nigeria. His family has a very very success family business in Nigeria. I believe he is comparing the USA to Nigeria. In Nigeria, there is no credit and bills. Anyone can start a business on the streets. I explain that you have to buy property, apply for business loans, and etc. I don't think my husband is getting the idea but my job is to stand behind him and to encourage his dream. I believe in God anything is possible. You never know our husbands could be the next business moguls!!!:thumbs::thumbs::thumbs:

I highly respect your mindset of standing behind your husband and encouraging his dreams. I've stated before, 'always encourage and support his desires'. But be careful as not to paint for him a 'false' picture; better yet - be sure that HE does not paint a false picture for himself. My husband too desires to start his own business. I'm believing in God that it will happen, and I will be with him every step of the way. Nevertheless, I am always a 'keep it real' type of person. I've shared with him the details of a Business Plan, what the bank considers, and why good credit is so important. In his case, this helps him to understand why he needs to hurry and establish some type of credit (he does not believe in credit cards). In addition, it also helps him to realize that having money to start a business is a real thing, and with all involved (loans, leasing/buying property, etc.) hard work and strong determination is important. Your husband (like mine) may not be getting the idea at the moment, but if he continues to think that dreams will come true over night, I believe it will become a 'set back' rather than encourage him to keep moving forward.

Just my thoughts, but as I mentioned ......... I highly respect your stance on standing by him, that's very important.

    Boaz

    Boaz,

I am a "keep it real" person too! I have explained the difficulties of starting a business to my husband millions of times. He is so determined on reaching this goal. He is enrolled in school and I always mention, "Why don't you get a degree and find a job with a good company?" He is not satisfied with working for someone else. I feel that my husband will have to learn the difficulties on his own! Just like when we were teens our parents constantly preached to have us avoid things in life. Many of us still went out and made mistakes. Now we have learned our lesson. Our husbands will have to venture out into the business world and learn the hardships for themselves! Our husbands might become successful and we could have stopped their dreams. If he fails at business than he has learned a lesson in life. As I stated before, I support my husband in any decision that he makes. He will have to learn for himself!

Just my two cents again!:whistle:

Ombeni is the exact same way! He views working for somebody else as a terrible thing.

Ditto. My fiance is the same way too. He said that he'd rather work for himself. He already conjured up a plan in the computer realm.

  4. I haven't noticed much of a gap with mine, either. Liberians are very American in their thinking so we agree and have the same viewpoints on a lot of things. Booker is very open with me. I think he may be a little more open than I am and he is always willing to "discuss" things. One of the cultural clashes I have noticed are the meaning of words (as Omoba mentioned earlier). He takes a word for it's literal meaning and I am a very sarcastic and hardly use a word for it's literal meaning. That can cause some friction between us sometimes because I see it as a joke and he sees it as an insult. I told him he better lighten up before he gets to America or he'll be walking around offended and feeling insulted all day. He will have to learn that Americans can use one word in several different ways, not just the literal meaning in the dictionary.

LOL! That is so true. My fiance takes things in the literal sense as well.

  5. When I was in Africa, I thought I could never get used to eating any of the stuff down there, but I loved the things my fiance family served, never turned one dish down. However, I never eaten bush meat. I always wondered what type of meat it was. Anyway, I could never eat goat meat or anything wild like that. sorry. Thankfully, my fiance always made sure goat meat wasn't on the menu.

Goat can be really good if prepared properly. Just had it Monday.

I still don't think I can eat goat comfortably. I wouldn't care if goat was braised with a gourmet sauce. I just wouldn't be able to get past that dreaded acquired tasted.

  7. Hi Shannon and welcome aboard. I am also happy to have found this site. It is such a big help. I am engaged to a nigerian man as well. We were even thinking about moving down to North Carolina eventually. He says that he don't think he can get used to the cold weather here in Wisconsin. I dunno. How is the North Carolina weather. I heard that it can be pretty mello. :)

  8. Hello my fellow March filers. Here's my resolutions: I'm going to pretend I dont have a petition in the works and I wont gawk at the USCIS site every 5 minutes looking for the prize. Instead I'm going to do something productive to actually make the time pass by. Needlepoint anyone? WHERES MY DAMN RECEIPT NUMBER! ARGH!

I guess I will be in the same boat too(looking and searching mode). I haven't sent anything off yet, but I will soon. Hopefully, I will have all the info ready by the end of this week. Meanwhile, I think I will be up to my ears in flour and do a lot of baking for the time being while I wait.

  9. If I have been at my one job for 5 years do I still need to include the other years from other jobs on the application?

What about my addresses? I have been at my current place for 4 years and the last one for 2 years, do I still need to include the other years from other places? How do I go about putting those things on the app?

You just have to count back 5 years. If you've only had one job for the whole 5 year period, that's all you need to write down (my fiance had one job for the last 13 years, so he just put in the start dates and end dates, which covered more than 5 years. I would include the real start date for a job I'd held for longer than 5 years - that's fine).

Same for housing. Put the start date for the one you've been at for 4 years on the line that would include "present." The second line would be the place you were at for 2 years, you can put the date you started living there, even if it's before the 5 year requested period.

Thanks so much for the quick reply Timsdaisy. It was much needed.

  10. yep, I know how you all exactly feel about the phone card bizness! Sometimes they are total rip offs. The card says 50 mintues, but you only get to talk for 30! The background noise is such a nuisance as well, especially if they are talking from a cell... you just want to scream. There is already slightly a language barrier between the two, then you have to speak and listen through the noisy static and train whistles too... Ai yi yi!

  11. Hey no problemo Queen Jenn!

    @ Ursy

I usually buy my videos from Africvideo.com or I just go to ebay and type in Nigerian videos or Nigerian movies and a few will pop up. Just look into the sites and you can pick which is best to your taste. The ones I buy from Africvideos is around $4.00 or so and the shipping is very cheap. Check it out. I also borrow a few movies from a good lady friend of mine who is from Liberia. She seems to own a whole store full of african Nigerian videos! Whenever she get something new she would watch it first and then she'd let me borrow it afterwards. Such a good friend she is.

  12. Actually, I have bought a few of the movies from Africvideos myself. I haven't had any delivery problems from them either. I found them off of ebay and I think they are the most legit as I've been dealing with them for over a year now. They have a slew of great movies. I love watching Nigerian movies too, almost better than American movies. My fiance is a little uneasy with me watching them because he think that I may get some wrong ideas from them. He is surprised because I know the names of the Nigerian actors more than he does. Just shows how much I watch them. ;)

Anyway, Here are some movies that I recommend and think that they are reaallly good: Games women play, Cry like Rivers, Keeping faith.

  13. Do I still need to file an affidavit of support(I864) for my fiance if we have no children. If I do have to file one, how would I go about finding if I am above, at or below the 125% poverty level.

Second question, can my fiance schedule an interview before I do all the filing for the k1?

    Thanks in advance.
