Now that I am a Naturalized US Citizen, after discussing with my sister, she had decided to proceed with me sponsoring her to the USA. That being said, I know there is a long waiting period for a F4 visa for her, so I have a few questions before we take the plunge---

Since it is 10+ years for her to get a F4 Visa, I know it's file, wait and forget-- since this a long period of time, I can not honestly said either myself or her would be living at the same residence during that time, so who need to file a change of address (myself, her or both)?

Who would we file with (USCIS, NVC, or both)?

Should she marry, (assuming to a Canadian, as her boyfriend is also Canadian) does this affect her application, would she need to notify USCIS or NVC?

Same question as above, but if she had children.

If she married an American (I don't think she would, but I want to cover all scenarios), I am assuming she would abandon this I-130 application and re-file with her American Spouse as her sponsor, and be out the filing fee, correct?

One last question, on Page 12 / Part 9 of the I-130 application, would I put my name (petitioner) or my sister's (beneficiary) name for items 1.a, 1.b, 1.c as the application or instructions do not specify.

You'll still submit it to USCIS as per the instructions, when USCIS approves your I-130 petition, they forward your case to the National Visa Center, who handles issuing the Visa at the Consulate (Montreal in this case).

Correct. You will need to apply at the Montreal Consulate, that's where I applied and had to go, despite being from the West Coast.

Had my interview today... was a combined I-751 and N-400, which I am happy to say I passed both. Appointment time was for 11:00 but arrived at about 10:30, was called in at 10:45, and was leaving the parking lot at 11:07.

Before leaving I did receive my Notice of Naturalization Oath Ceremony and I will be going back then (updated table below, but didn't change to red as I am not yet officially a citizen-- also removed my line listed under USCIS Online Filing (not sure how I got there, but I didn't file online)).

Thank you to all for clarifying about the B2/ I-485 scenario, and informing me that is not a viable option-- this was something I did not realize (was simply exploring options).

Since the process is long (15 years or so)--- and should she decide to go with my sponsorship, I guess would she would notify USICS with any address changes, or changes in marital status?

Not that I'm condoning her to seek out a USC, as she currently has a Canadian BF, and they have been together for several years (I was unsure if she should marry him and that would affect her sponsorship-- no plans for marriage now-- but this is a long process), I guess she could always abandon her (my) petition should her situation change (and be out the filing fee).

Thank you! She's been asking since I announced I received my N400 interview, and I thought I'd ask here first since I have received a lot of helpful information in my case. . . I'm willing to sponsor her, but with the time involved and different situation, I'm almost tempted to reefer her to an attorney in Canada specializing in US Immigration Law.

I know I'm asking ahead of time (still have to attend my N400 Interview) but my 26 year old sister is hoping I can sponsor her for a green card once I receive my US Citizenship, and it has left me with more questions than answers (I have done everything so far without an attorney in my immigration process).

First, can I sponsor her for an F4 Visa (form I-130)? I know this is not a quick process, so is it really worth it for her?

Second, she is currently single (never married), should she get married after I-130 is filed, would that complicate things for her down the road? (She doesn't have plans to get married in the immediate future, but this process takes years)

Third, as she lives in Canada and close to the US Border, would day trips/vacations complicate things for her with a I-130 filed? Day trips are very common between the US and Canada. Travel between the US and Canada require little more than presenting your passport (or Nexus Card, which she has) at the border.

That being said, would she be better off coming in on a tourist visa (B2) and then requesting a AOS (form I-485)? Is the process any quicker or just as long as filing form I-130 with her in Canada? I figured she would not be allowed to leave the US while her application is pending.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you! It has been a while, and honestly when I got the notification today I was excited as it was sooner than I was expecting.

When I had my 3rd (yes, 3rd) I-551 stamp put into my passport, I inquired about how much longer and wasn't expecting to hear anything until July at the earliest.

Today I got the news I had been waiting for. . . My N-400 interview has been scheduled!

I had filed my N-400 02/18 with my I-751 still pending, as the CSC was horribly backlogged at the time (not sure if that's still the case, but I have still not received a permanent GC and have been getting my passport stamped since then) and there has been no update to my I-751 status since 03/18 when my case was transferred (and combined with my N-400, I assume).

So I am wondering how long it takes to expect the Interview Notice, what paperwork is required/what should I bring (aside from Interview Notice, GC, Passport, DL mentioned on USCIS website). When I filed my N-400 I provided a lot of additional documents (joint bank account statements, insurance policies, IRS Transcripts). Since filing I made one trip outside the USA (to Canada) and plan on informing the agent during my interview.

I also plan on bringing my spouse to my interview since (I'm assuming) my I-751 was combined with my N-400.

As a former Wells Fargo and Bank of America client, I can not in good faith recommend either bank even to my worst enemy. 😮

Not sure which coast you’re on, but if on the West, First Interstate Bank is top notch and I’ve been banking with them for over 12 years long before I was married or lived in the USA. 

I don’t know how much has changed but I was able to open my account with them over the phone (speaking directly to the branch, and being in Montana they have lots of experience with Canadians)

Ultimately, this is a decision you can only make for yourself, and being a fellow Canadian who has lived in Texas for just a little over 3 years now, maybe sharing my experience will help you in your decision.

First, to get to this point in your life you and your husband have worked hard for you to be here. This wasn't a decision made lightly or on a whim. I know when we decided to move to Texas, we found a rental house and we just went-- no jobs lined up or anything. There were times in the first couple of months we were here (I came as a CR1, so I could work since day) neither of us were working, and I seriously doubted our decision, and if we did the right thing. I gave up a job in Canada I was unhappy at, but I made 6 figures (Canadian $) and since it was the BC Lower Mainland, all I could afford was a 2 bed + den apartment. Our Texas house is 2600 sq ft, 4 beds, 3 baths-- something we could never imagining owning in Canada. After applying for more jobs than I care to remember, I eventually got an interview with a large company that seemed perfect. . . until I started the actual job (it was a call center, something I have never done before) and for $10 an hour, I couldn't even afford to eat at the employee cafeteria.

They say persistence pays off, and I kept my name in at the local police department (as I had interviewed well and passed the tests for dispatcher, but later found out I couldn't be a dispatcher or patrol officer as a non-citizen)  for various civilian positions and have been employed there for over 2 1/2 years now (where does the time go?).

Everyone's experience in a new location is different, maybe it wasn't so difficult for me since growing up my dad would get transferred every 2-3 years and I grew up all over Western Canada, in both large cities and small towns. We never lived in the city where my mom was from (and her family stayed), so maybe being away from extended family and having to make new friends every couple of years it wasn't anything new for me.

Technology today makes staying in touch easier now with friends/family far away then ever before. I'm not a social media person (no Facebook, Twitter, or whatever the kids are using today), but I have group iMessage conversations with my parents, brother and sister, as well as college friends, and texts to friends and extended family. Usually it's a picture of me on a patio in the winter, bragging while they're buried under six feet of snow!

Trust me, it does get easier-- sure there are things in Canada I miss (family aside-- Costco Food Court Poutine, Bacon 'n Eggers from A&W, Coffee Crisp and Wonderbars candy bars), but that's what trips to visit are for. Youtube has a great selection of CBC Marketplace episodes (and when they're doing the Canadian vs. US Shopping comparison episodes, I'm glad I'm on this side of the border), and you can stream your hometown radio station online to change things up every now and then. Now, I can't honestly say I've felt 'homesick' to the point of wanting to go back. Sure- I'd love to see Winnipeg (in the summer of course) since I haven't been there since 2001, and have fond childhood memories from the 1990's, but I know it wouldn't be the same as it was (or how I remember) and then I'd just be disappointed. I guess that would make me 'timesick'?

Sorry, I'm kind of going all over the place here, but importantly the USA has provided us opportunities, that otherwise wouldn't be obtainable in Canada. That rental house? We now own it (I know this house would be over $1,500,000 CAD if it was dropped into my old neighborhood), I'm working for a police department (something that I never imagined I would be able to do), and we are able to live comfortably.

I know anything new can be scary at first, but it does get better. I hope sharing my experience helps. 🙂

I was able to make an account and log in with my SIN number. . . I used my last Canadian address before moving to the USA.

Funny thing was in the security multiple choice questions, it asked to pick a previous address, and none of the presented options were applicable and there was no "none of the above" option, so I picked "5 Lindsay Rd", and now it shows on my Canadian Credit Karma report (with a duplicate of a correct previous Postal Code).

Everything else shows correct, so I decided not to complain or file a dispute.

I don't have a US Credit Karma account as I can get my free FICO score from my credit card issuers and my credit union provides a free credit report (less personal info online, the better IMO).

I apologize if I should have posted this somewhere else, but wasn't sure where of I should have started a new thread. . .

In a little over 2 weeks I have an upcoming trip to Canada, and I don't know if I'm being over cautious, but I want to make sure everything goes as smooth as possible on the return through US Customs:

This will be my second trip to Canada with my expired Green Card, when flying into the US from Canada, you pre-clear US Customs before leaving Canada, and I went though US Customs at Vancouver International (YVR) on 01/01/18. Although it was not an issue, just more of an inconvenience as I had to go through secondary when my I-551 and documents were verified, I'm worried this time because I had to get another I-551 stamp as my previous one expired, and the agent wrote some wrong information with my stamp-- she wrote "Approved I-751" (this was confirmed my case is still pending, after calling USCIS and speaking to a tier 2 agent), and the Case # she wrote in was the one that became a CRI-89 ("My Fees Were Waived" status).

Concerned over this, I called USICS last week and they said that what the agent wrote (incorrectly) was not that big of a deal, and because I am in the system with a pending I-751 and N-400, I should have no issues re-entering the country, as I have legal status.

Since I want an problem-free experience returning to the USA (flying out of Edmonton International (YEG) this time), should I make another InfoPass appointment, or would that be a waste of time? I would plan on bringing the receipt letters from when I filed my I-751 and N-400 to Canada and present to US Customs on my return along with (expired) Green Card, and stamped passport.

I could have sworn that I read somewhere on VJ (I wish I could remember where now) that when you make an InfoPass appointment, it forces an agent to look at your application and review it. With that being said, I was thinking of making an InfoPass appointment after my trip to Canada to inquire about my expedition request (http://www.visajourney.com/forums/topic/676941-n400-expedite-request-sent-in/ ) to find out if my request was received and the status of that request (this would be about 2 months after sending my request in) as I have received no response or confirmation it was received (other than signature confirmation when I sent it Priority Mail) and require an agent to review my application.

If the letters from your supervisors specifically mentioned an automatic job offer as an officer directly upon you becoming a citizen, or your application detailed/proved that you would suffer severe financial hardship/loss if you don't work as a police officer as soon as possible (instead of the position you are in now), then you have a much better shot, imo.

My recommendation letters from my supervisors were just that, recommendations-- no mention of severe hardship. There is no mention of an automatic job offer as a Police Officer (recommendation letters say "...eligible for testing",  "...necessary skills and knowledge to get hired" , "...anything I can do to provide assistance in gaining citizenship", and after discussing it with co-workers and family, we felt that the department doesn't want to accept that liability and legal burden as there is a whole vetting process (psych evaluation, polygraph, physical testing, oral board interview, background checks).

I'm not worried about failing any of those, however I'm sure the department does not want to make a job offer until all those tests are passed, and you have to be a citizen to apply, hence this feeling of being stuck due to long USICS processing times.

Today I mailed a letter to the Dallas Field Office Director requesting my N400 (and Pending I-751) application be expedited. I got the contact information at my InfoPass appointment when I had my (second) I-551 stamp placed in my passport on 05/30/18.

A little background information on myself:

• Permanent Resident since April 2015, Conditional Green Card Holder (obtained through marriage)
• I-751 Filed January 2017 (CSC Pending, now transferred to NBC after N-400 filed)
• N-400 Filed February 2018 (Biometrics done March 2018)

I'm sure y'all know the criteria for expediting requests, but here it is again:

USCIS may expedite a petition or application if it meets one or more of the following criteria:

•Severe financial loss to company or person;

•Emergency situation;

•Humanitarian reasons;

•Nonprofit organization whose request is in furtherance of the cultural and social interests of the United States;

•Department of Defense or national interest situation;

•USCIS error; or

•Compelling interest of USCIS.

It has been my lifelong ambition to become a Police Officer, and in order to be a licensed Peace Officer in Texas, you are required to be a US Citizen. I work for a smaller police department in a civilian position (not one of the big cities), and have since 2015. Once I obtain US Citizenship, I plan on submitting my application for a Police Officer position.

In my letter to the Director I indicated why I was requesting my application be expedited (22 month processing time when other February 2018 filers are now already citizens in other locations, desire to be come a Police Officer, nationwide shortage of Police Officers [which could lead to a national interest situation]); I tried to apply my situation as best as possible to the above criteria. I also included letters of recommendation from my Police Supervisors (including the Deputy Chief), as well as the standard copy of my green card (front and back) and I-551 stamp, as well as my Police Department ID Card (front and back), backing up my claims.

Now I know I only mailed my expedite request today (1-Day Priority Mail, Signature Confirmation), and know I shouldn't hear something the next day, or for maybe a few weeks, but realistically speaking, how do my odds look? I thought I wrote a pretty good letter, and the letters of recommendation were very good given as well as who they came from, but I'm just curious if anyone else has had sent in a expedite request and what their experience was like. Was your request granted? Did you even get a response? What did you do if you if your request was denied? Any feedback would be appreciated. Thanks!
