I wanted to share my wife's I-751/N-400 story to give some hope for you that are still waiting or may be approaching an N-400 interview with I-751 pending.

We filed for my wife's I-751 on 1/27/17 to CSC. With no word yet on the I-751, we filed the N-400 for citizenship with the Dallas office on 1-18-18.

Like most of you who filed N-400 with I-751 pending, the I-751 was transferred to NBC in May 2018.

However, since there is no posted processing time for I-751 at the NBC, we still filed a case inquiry to USCIS in October 2018 once our case was outside CSC normal process times. When we received no reply within 30 days, we filed another case inquiry in early December 2018.

Finally, on December 21 2018, we received a response from USCIS saying they would adjudicate our I-751 an N-400 petitions together.

On January 3 2019, we received an N-400 interview notice for February 7. The interview notice made no mention of the I-751.

On 2/7, at the Dallas field office, when the officer called my wife, we asked whether I should come to the interview as well and the officer said yes.

The officer informed us that the primary purpose of the interview was to adjudicate the N-400 but, to do so, she had to close out the I-751 first.

She had us confirm our basic demographic information. She asked us about our daughter and asked to see our daughter's birth certificate. At that point, my wife also volunteered a picture of the three of us together. The officer was satisfied that this was enough evidence and she finished the I-751 interview.

The officer did allow me to stay in the room for my wife's N-400 test and interview. My wife passed the test and then the officer went through the Yes/No questions from the application. She did not ask to see any other documents (never even asked for my wife's passport) and said she was recommending approval on both cases.

Since the officer also happened to be a supervisor (we got lucky there), she said she could go into the system and try to approve the cases to trigger/print the oath letter. She was able to do this and my wife's oath was scheduled for 2/12. My wife took her oath on 2/12 and is now a US citizen!

A few takeaways from our experience:

    1. If citizenship is your ultimate goal, do not delay filing the N-400. If we had, we would have likely waited another 6 months for citizenship.
    2. Continue to file case inquiries with USCIS about your I-751 being out of normal processing times even if your case was transferred to NBC. We are convinced that our case inquires helped our case get noticed to have the N-400 interview scheduled.
    3. At least in Dallas, officers seem fully aware of the I-751/N-400 combo interview situation and know how to handle it. The I-751 portion of our interview was short and very straightforward.

Good luck to all of you still waiting, your time will come soon, keep the faith!

I would suggest going to the Oath ceremony even if you don't get clarity on the I-751 beforehand.

It is important to remember that, for those of us who had N-400 interviews with I-751's pending, the case status almost never changed online for the I-751 even after the N-400 is approved. Granted, we personally did receive an I-751 approval notice in the mail (the day before our oath ceremony) but the fact that you didn't could have just been an administrative oversight or our always reliable postal service could have lost it in the mail.

Good luck and keep us all posted!

No, that's great!!! That means they're going to send you the letter! You're done!! OMG I am so happy for you LOL. Gotta be becasue I have been dreaming about being done with this process since I started. All you need to do now is wait for that letter, you should get it withing a week (altough they say they have 30 days). My advice: call USCIS as soon as possible...officers (tier 1) have the power to tell you the date of your ceremony (since it was already decide). If they don't tell you, then request (with no fear or shame or hesitation) to speak to a tier2 officer, just say that since you're been waiting for long, you don't want miss Oath (sometimes the letters state your oath ceremony withing the same week). Congratulations!!!!!!!!!!!!

The N-445 was uploaded to my online account, the Oath Ceremony is scheduled for 01/15/19. Also, I called USCIS this morning and the officer confirmed that the I751 was approved on 12/27, no RFE or interview. Looks like it's actually happening...I'm almost done

I'm in a very similar situation. I had my N400 interview, and was approved, 3 months ago. My I751 has been pending since February 2017. Yesterday my USCIS account was updated and the N400 section shows: 'We scheduled your naturalization ceremony'. No updates on the I751 part.

Is your status just showing 'inline' or does it show as 'scheduled'? Not sure what this latest update means as I751 needs to be approved first...I assume....

I did but every time they are saying you need to wait for at least 30 days to respond. For I-751 my 30 days are on Dec 16th and for N400 my 30 days are on Jan 7th.
One more thing,  I filed I751 in CSC and they trasnfer it to NBC.I got I-751 approval letter from NBC but my service request for I-751 assigned to CSC. I searched online and figure it out that they produce card from NBC . They should assign my service request to NBC.

I entered the office and he said that bringing him was nice and lets see if we need him. He maid me swear and then he start with the form question (all the personal question, address, phone number, etc etc etc). Then he ask me to read a sentence in a tablet (Abraham Lincoln was a general during the civil war) and then he ask me to write in the tablet (Lincoln was a general during the civil war). Then he ask me 4 question (Longest river, date of independence adopted, name of the speaker of the house and name of the president now) and he said ok congratulations you pass your test, let me close your 751 case and we are done so they can give you your letter for the oath ceremony outside. At the end he did'n check our evidence, not interview with my husband and he was really nice. Now to prepare for my oath ceremony. We are really happy and we are really grateful with all your comments. I wish  you all the best and hopefully everyone will be citizen in no time.

PD: No update in the status on the USCIS page or any place jet but I already have my letter with date and time of ceremony.

I am absolutely disgusted with the whole process. I am honestly almost ready to sue USCIS. I filed I 751 in January 2017 (over 22 months now!). I applied for citizenship on January 2018, and got interviewed on August 27th. I was approved. Since then, I haven't received either the letter to attend oath ceremony or an approval on my I 751. I called USCIS 5 times, the last time they put an urgent request to solve the issue (I have to call back on Dec 12). I went for 3 info pass appointments to renew I 551. The last time was on November 1st. They din't want to renew I 551 (my third one) because it was too early (was set to expire on January 22, 2019). I told the officer in the front desk I was going to be out the country, he still refused. I called a supervisor, a woman which was very rude and clearly showed little to no knowledge about basic immigration rules. She demanded from me a "purchased ticket" to renew I 551, I was so mad already I fired back, told her I don't need such a thing, because that stamp is also a permit to work, and that always should be up-to-date. I mentioned that I wanted to get in touch with the officer who interviewed me, she laugh, said that how could I do that if I don't know his/her name. I showed her the form N 652, where clearly states IO last name and also one of the options allow you to get in touch with him/her. She looked absolutely socked and angrier. She let me waiting for 45 minutes, only to comeback and said that she couldn't access my file neither see me in the system. Then she asked for my passport and with a really bad attitude renewed it for 6 more months. That was over a month ago, and still haven't heard anything. I already called my congressman and send all my info, I sent email to the Ombudsman. I don't know what else to do, other than sue them. I really didn't want this because represents time and money, but I will have to. If somebody knows what else can I do, legally, please let me know.

Congrats to everybody who's been done with this nightmare.

When my wife filed, she counted all the trips even if they were prior to the GC (w/ AP) or past the 3 year anniversary of the GC.  She was not close to the 18 month rule, but I think if she was then we could have argued to only count the trips in the 3 year GC window.  In fact my wife told me the IO asked her if she had any other international trips between when she filed the N400 and when the interview was held.

    Good Luck!

This was my wife's experience too. Combo interview, both apps approved verbally by IO, next day status changed to oath ceremony will be scheduled, and then a week later they gave her an oath ceremony date.

Congrats. I also passed the 400 interview, but the officer said my 751 was pending and a decision could not be made because of it. A month later, my 751 was approved, and a week after my 751 approval. My oath notice was mailed, but I think my husband's passing and the packet of me requesting to expedite the oath ceremony with tons of medical records,  dr's letters, and a strong central argument based on humanitarian ground (proving my husband's illness and why he couldn't attend the possible 751 interview)triggered the adjudication and approval. Congrats again

My experience was a bit similar. I went to the interview with a decision cannot be made, but the next day, I was approved for both. A week later, I had an oath date.

Hi thanks for your answers Charly. The physical presence won't be an issue because all my training will take place in continental US territory. And as far as the "residing for more than 3 months in the district you file" rule for the N-400 that's not a problem because I was in full compliance of that when I filed. My residency still will be the one where my spouse is and I currently reside even during my training. Anyway I went ahead and applied  notwithstanding. I am still waiting for the Marines to give me a shipping date to start my training, so that's in stand by at the moment. I already got my biometrics appointment by that way, so that was fast.

Jack88, by the way, be careful with the training...if it's 6 months, then probably you want to ask first to a lawyer. Since your current status is LPR, that means you have to comply with the PHYSICAL PRESENCE rule. Not sure if you have some advantages becasue of the Marines (I'd say probably yes) , but at this point, better to talk to a qualified immigration attorney as there's a lot details depending of your unique situation).

Good afternoon everyone, i just want to give an update on my case, I went in for my N-400 interview this afternoon at Tampa, FL. Waited for 2 hours 45 minutes because i went in so early, when finally called in the immigration officer that did the interview was so sweet, we were just having general discussion about life, what i do for a living, where did i go to college and where i worked. She asked me to read, then told me to write what she read out to me, asked me 6 questions and told me congratulations, i asked her i have I-751 pending and she told me yes she knows and she got in in front of her, and told me not to worry cos she have approved it, she did not ask me for any document, did not ask for my spouse, before i walked out of her office i got an update via text and email saying i am in line for Oath Ceremony.
I would say always have faith and believe and hope for the best in every situation. My journey is almost over i can'r wait for next week to be sworn in as an AMERICAN.

They haven't update the old website only the new one, any news on your case? I did not file for N-400 yet even though I was tempted to do it back in January when I was eligible I decided to clear my I-751 first then move onto my N-400. I have an overseas trip coming up in a few months I will probably wait until I am back to file for N-400 or maybe soon due the the latest news on citizenship.

It does feel good to not have anything pending with them for a bit .

I had an interview N-400 at the Philadelphia office. I was called sharp on time. Officer was good and friendly. After I asked to be seated across his table, he quickly found my application and locate the application. He first dive into civic questions. Who was the first president?/number of house representatives?/ how many years do we elect them?/ who is Chief Justice?/ name one war fought in 1900s/ one more but I forgot.

then reading and writing test, asked me to read? who is the first president? and then asked me to write: George Washington is the first president. After that, he went through quick rapid fire yes/no questions. and that's it. He handed me a paper saying congratulations and walk me to the door.

    online status changed quickly on the same day; the latest status reads about oath ceremony;

I had my interview at the Long Island, NY (Holtsville) Field Office on August 1, 2018. The interview letter asked to report for interview 30 minutes before scheduled time. The office was far from my place (27 miles) and I reached 15 minutes before interview. After completing the security checks and checking in for the interview, was made to wait with other applicants with instructions to approach the check-in window again if not called for interview within 90 minutes. Most of the interviewees had their lawyers with them. I was called in about 45 minutes. It was obvious they wanted to move things along quickly to get to other applicants. I was nervous and I followed the officer back to behind his desk and he had to ask me to back away, 😂. I was then told to raise my right hand and swear to tell the truth and scanned the right and left index fingers. After getting my foreign passport, divorce decree from my previous marriage, State ID, and Permanent Resident Card, I was questioned about trips I had taken outside of the U.S. and other personal questions followed by questions 45 through 50 from the N-400 application. The most dreaded part was the civics questions because it happens to be my least favorite subject but luckily I answered the first six questions correctly and he did not ask me any further questions. The questions asked were:

Q: Who was the first President?
Q: Where is the Statue of Liberty?
Q: Who is the Governor of New York?
Q: What movement tried to end racial discrimination?
Q: What do we show loyalty to when we say the Pledge of Allegiance?
Q: Name two national U.S. holidays.

As part of the English section was asked to read out loud, "Who lives in the White House?" Then asked to write, "The President lives in the White House." I had to then digitally sign what I think were parts 16 and 18 of the N-400 application. I had with me jointly filed tax returns for the last three years, letter from our bank stating I am authorized user on his credit card, a document confirming me as a life insurance beneficiary and other documents, but he needed from both me and my spouse:

Bank statements or letter from years 2016 to present; Credit card statements from years 2016 to present; Utility bills from years 2016 to present; Medical insurance showing coverage of myself and USC spouse; Insurance policy (if any); Mortgage, lease, or notarized letter from the landlord for years 2016 to present; Copy of tax transcripts from years 2016 & 2017; and Copy of state identification or driver license. If unable to submit any of the requested documents, I should then provide a notarized statement with an explanation. The interview concluded with him letting me know that I passed the civics and English portions and that a decision is pending until I submit the requisite documents through mail or in-person addressed to him.

Selective Service is something you would do if you lived in the US  between the ages of 18–25. If not, you can write a letter explaining that you were not.
  25. Thanks

The letters are not customized for individuals, my wife had the same request.  Of course in her case, she is not required to register for selective service both due to age and gender, so she had no evidence.  If you were not required to register, make sure you tell the IO if they even ask about it.

    Good Luck!
