Dont know if I can answer it here. Mods, please feel free to remove it. The basic rules are you don't travel outside the states for more than 6 months under 3 or 5 years rules and you have lived in the same area for 3 months prior to applying. If you want to find more info, feel free to look at N400 forums. They have been discussed million times there

hahah no worries. I wish they would just process our 10 years GC in a normal processing time so that we don't have to ask for I551 stamp (and surrender the Conditional Green Card).

We are arguing about semantics, but I thought it important to make sure fellow readers know that "green card" doesn't mean the piece of plastic. The I551 stamp is also a "green card".
A ton of N400 applicants out there don't have physical green cards. Like me.
Are we all of a sudden no longer able to file for N400? Of course not.
I don't want to repeat myself - but in a basic sentence - Physical green card and I551 stamp are the SAME THING.
So taking your passport with I551 stamp to your biometrics covers the "what to bring: green card"
You did nothing wrong - you did absolutely the right thing - for someone who has a plastic I551. For people who have I551 stamps, this is also what you should do.

The reason I ask is that they are both the same thing - just a different format. A Green Card is a I551 document. The stamp they put in your passport at the infopass appointment after you surrender your "green card" is also a I551 - an extension of your LPR status - so technically, you are never without a I551. Either you have an expired one, or you have a current one, stamped in your passport.
If they said at the N400 biometrics, can I see your green card, showing the I551 stamp in the passport is the same as showing the physical piece of plastic.
Sorry to be picky, but these fine details are important, because saying things like "glad they didn't take mine as I needed it at N400" makes it sound like you needed the physical green card, and that isn't the case, and it may make some people who did surrender the physical card worry they did the wrong thing, which they didn't.

Are you asking what they asked for N400 biometrics? It's actually stated in my online profile (I filed N400 online) that we need to bring the green card (see below attachment).
When I got there, they said "can I have your permanent residence card?". So I gave them my green card and they never said a word about it being expired. Now I can only speak based on my experience. You may want to ask around what others who apply N400 with pending I751 experienced (at the biometrics office). I don't want to cause worry just because of one experience. If one thing I learned about immigration, it's not consistent.

I honestly don't remember but whatever I gave her, she gave it back to me.
I always carry a copy of I 797 in my bag ever since my GC expired so it's possible I gave her a copy. Now I also carry the copy of my passport page with the I551 stamp on it, esp since I heard TX is passing the bill on any police officer can ask your residency status when they pull you over. You can never be too careful

Yes, I actually forgot my paper at home. Thankfully my husband sent it to my email a few days before so I just downloaded it on my phone.

That is what the officer told me in Washington DC at my Infopass when I asked him. I said - in jest - awww can I keep it - and he didn't look up and replied - no, that isn't an option.
He then went into a long ramble about why would I like to keep an expired document, its useless, and told me stories about people who cried their eyes out at having to hand it over etc etc.
If they let you keep it, that's great, but set your expectation that you must surrender it, when receiving an I551.
As always with USCIS - YMMV.
Yeah, I am glad they didnt take mine because when I went for N400 biometrics, they asked for it. Also I used it in the airport even after it's expired. Guess it just depends where you are going to get I551 stamp.

Well, the officer did not even ask for it. When I came, I just told her I need an I-551 stamp for employer purposes. Then I gave her my I797 notice. She just stamped my passport after.
So maybe when you go there, just give them your notice, don't mention your GC. The I797 has all the information she needs.

Yes, I filed about 3 weeks ago. Within 6 days, they posted my biometrics notice online for 2 weeks later. It went so fast up until then hahaha...

They let me keep my conditional GC although technically it has no "power" anymore since your stamp will overwrite your GC and I797.
If you apply N-400 you may need it since that's what they asked when I had my N400 biometrics 2 days ago. They didnt even check the expiry date though. Mine expired Oct 16.

@reneesuarezYes, based on the processing time as of June 30, 2017, Greer office is now processing Jan 2017 so I am sure you will move very fast! Compared that to Dallas that only processed July 2016 as of June 30 2017. I need to take a meditation class because I may be the last one standing on July'17 filers

Dallas filers here. I don't know if this is related but I filed online on July 26 2017. I had my bio on Aug 15, 2017. Since I filed online on USCIS website, it gave me an estimated processing time 19 months from now! Estimated waiting time to interview is 18 months. I know they are slow but 2 years seems excessive.
Just thought I will add some info to the mix that yes we may be waiting for a long time. Can you guys keep me updated if you receive any case updates from USCIS?

I noticed this morning that the USCIS website has deleted the update on June 2017 and replaced it with as of May 2017. This happened on Dallas FO. Dont know about other office...

The updated back is also moved back to as of May 31, 2017. The June update was removed for some reasons. Maybe they received lots of complaints and decided to just cancel the June update

@Going through: hey I was just curious. Did your estimated processing time and interview ever change ever since they have the feature? My status got updated this morning that they reviewed my bio and I dont have to do anything at this point. Estimated waiting time for interview 18 months from now lol
. That just seems excessive because Dallas FO processing time is like a year.

I finished my biometrics appointment today at Fort Worth, TX office. So impressed, no wait. In and Out under 10 mins. The lady is super nice and knows what she is doing (my fingerprints are so hard to take because I wash my hand a lot
). She gave me the civic study handbook and told me that we will send you a notice for interview. She said it may take a while since they are behind (no surprise there, Dallas FO).
I asked if they accept walk in. She said it depends on the emergency and how busy the office is. I came around 1 pm and practically no one there. So if any of you wants to do FP walk-in on Fort Worth, TX office, 1 -2 pm will be your best bet.
Now the waiting begins...and my estimated waiting time has moved again, one month early. I have a feeling it will move again lol.

well I dont think they figure out the kinks yet. Mine moves from April 2018 to March 2019 lol. I heard it's not just me. I am thinking the system is new and there is a glitch.

I assume estimated dates will constantly move in the queue depending on other applications received and their own priority dates? Or it could be a glitch that just will settle down after a while and the estimations will become more accurate.

@SamBillz Hi there, I saw your office is in Houston. Did you get the estimated completion date on your online account? I heard Texas office is one of the busiest and slowest in the country. My estimated is in 8 months - April 2018.

But when I click case activity (blue box color) it still showed we reviewed your biometrics. In Ellis it also showed fingerprint scheduled. I am thinking the "interview scheduled" is like a default thing after fingerprint?
