  1. I have my biometrics on Tuesday and just wondered if my husband had to come with. I was under the impression that he wasnt needed, but some friends of mine who are going through AOS in Tucson also, said that her husband had to be there, but then again she was adjusting from a student visa, could this be the reason?

I wouldnt mind my husband coming with me, but he's working nights and he'll be trying to sleep and since I can drive myself, I dont want to bring him there for no reason.

  2. For some reason I couldnt edit and wanted to add that;

I personally think that diversity is a wonderful thing and I loved living in London because of the mix of different people, it makes life interesting and once someone lets down their cultural barriers and embrase other cultures etc, so much more is opened up to them.

  3. IMHO - the real reason diverse communities in America are the way they are isn't because there is something inherently wrong with diversity, it's because different racial and economic groups in this country do not trust each other. The whites and the blacks, the rich and the poor, the yankees and the rednecks, the flyover country dwellers and the new yorkers, the foreigners and the americans.... there is distrust all around so when you put one or more of these groups together (i.e. diversity), that's what you get.

The solution isn't to discourage diversity... the solution is to change our culture from the inside, break down those barriers. Easier said that done.

I think that this is really well said!!

I dont know, I've always felt comfortable around all types of groups. I have many close white, black, asian, indian, hispanic friends from all over the world, from all classes - rich to poor. Put me in a neighbourhood where I'm the only white person, and I'll feel just as comfortable as being in a neighbourhood full of white people. I have never been hated on for being who I am - I have NEVER been called out for being 'white in a black neighbourhood', of course I've had the odd look from some females, but thats coz its what females do - no matter what race! lol! People have different experiences I guess. But I beleive it's to do with attitude as well. I wasnt raised in a multi-ethnic community - but my parents raised me not to look down on or up at anyone - that skin tone, class, sexuality, whatever does not have a negative impact on anyone.

  4. My fiance hasn't finished a degree- he actually will barely not be able to get his degree in Japan. Which is ok, because he was planning on transferring and getting a degree at a college here anyway since it seemed more practical to us. My question is- do you have to wait a year after getting your green card to be considered a resident of a certain state? Or can you just wait a year after arrival and be considered a resident?

We've asked several consulars that question and none of them have had a clue. It matters though- the difference in costs for in-state, out-of-state, and non-us resident are ridiculous.

It really does depend on the college/university. You will need to take that question to the colleges your interested in. Usually it's a year since you've been living in the states, and then some colleges dont even need that.

  5. Why is it that many people want to be transfered to CSC? Depending on the local office, CSC can be a longer wait than if you get an interview!!

Because you skip the interview all together and get a GC. I've read some horror stories on VJ where people wait 1-2 yrs after interview to get their green cards because they get stuck in some FBI review or something. CSC seems quicker.

But if your name gets stuck in FBI name check, it doesnt matter if your at CSC or have an interview.

  6. I'm due to start full time college (community) this month. I applied last month, before I was married and before we sent AOS off. It was easy enough for me. I had my certificates for my GCSE's and ALevels from the UK with me and they accepted those no problem. I mean, why shouldnt they right? Lucky for me, my husband is in the airforce and so the college I'm studying with allowed me to have the 'resident' fees even though I'd only been living in AZ from less than 1 month!!!

O yea - and I did need my SSN

    Good luck x

  7. I love facebook! I joined and didnt use it for the longest, but now, I have made contact with so many people I went to school with and it's really nice to catch up with everyone and see how things are going for them.

  8. And what if he did? That would make him 'have issues'?

Funny you should say that chief because the other day a lady asked me to help her because there was a guy standing near her car, in a parking lot, with pants up to his knees. She thought he was going to steal here car and was afraid for herself and her baby. So I approached him and ask if there was any issues. He moved on. So yeah it seems that the guys image did play a part.

Which is another issue I am sure you will deny and play dumb too as well. Dress code that is. These apparent poor kids who are gang banging and shooting up neighbor hoods are driving around in $50K cars wearing $1,000 outfits. But hey segregation is to blame right or was it poverty.. hmmm

Plus wearing pants to your knees does not help you get a job now does it..

You are sterotyping like crazy and your racist remarks are driving me crazy! Why cant you just admit that you have a problem with Americans who are black? You are ignoring important facts that other people have pointed out in the thread. And for you to turn around and say that people wouldnt have a problem with MelandDaniel when they find out that he's 'not from the US' - its sick! So people would have a problem with my husband? Because he's American and god forbid ... black!!

Yes, there are some black people who dress 'hood' ... but guess what? There are also white, hispanic, asian people who dress that way. It happens to be the fashion that is in - expecially for the younger generation and has been for a while! And according to you, black people turn up at job interviews dressed that way? Are you stupid? Would you turn up to a job interview in jeans? Just because people dress a certain way on the streets doesnt mean that they'll attend a job interview that way.

And as for that woman who was scared that a black male wearing baggy clothes was going to steal her car! She's as bad as you! Stereotyping in a negative way! And people say that racism doesnt exist anymore .. whatever.

  9. I've been really positive and had everything going good in as far getting everything done (ssn, license etc) but I woke up today feelin kinda down. One more day of nothing to do, one more day of having no friends around - I'm bored outta my mind and feel friendless!! I know I shouldnt be feeling down as in less than 20 days I'll be starting college and 'hopefully' I'll meet people there. I'm just afraid that I wont find any friends! People here seem to be outgoing and talkative, but I'm the shy one who doesnt really say that much until I know people, and I'm afraid that being that way will stop me from making friends.

I'm sure this is just a moment, bought on by the fact I waited to see what my husband was doing for lunch (he has an extra long one today and was gonna come home to see me) only for him to tell me he's going out to eat with his friends. Thats fine, I dont want to deprive him of seeing his friends, but it made me realize that I have noone to go to lunch with etc. And thats what makes me sad.

I'm sure we've all been through this when moving to a new place, and I'll be fine in a couple of hours, but for now, it's all got a little too much and I just had to share it with someone.

  10. I'm bumping this up again as I'm still unclear. The externship (its not actually an internship) will be part of my college course, for experience. I will be under 'Pima county college' and will have no contract with the actual dental office I'll be assisting. There is no way that I will be paid and it is necessary for completing my course. I'm hoping that by the time I'll be doing this (Jan) I'll have my greencard, but there's always that possibility.

  11. I usually always fly Northwest, but it really depends on where you are located. If you are close to LAX, there are a lot of choices. I'm in Tucson now, so my choices are somewhat limited for good prices, even if I fly out of Phoenix.

You can always get a ticket to LAX and then book a separate flight out of LAX to your destination. Thats what I do, since most of the choices out of Minneapolis to Indonesia are expensive. NWA.com at best, is $3000, most of the options are $8000

Orbitz has some other options, with the cheapest being, NWA and China Airlines. But I prefer flying on EVA, and its about the same price. Even if I have to book segments seperatly.

American airlines are pretty competitive to common places like the Philippines and Thailand, but suck for more unusual destinations like Indonesia.

Just taking a look at Orbitz, it would cost maybe $200 for a flight from Tuscon to LAX. Then a flight from LAX to BKK on Eva is a bit over $1000. So say $1200 total. Now I just did a flight from Tuscon to BKK on Eva and it's just a shade under $1200. These were just some dates I put in randomly. I won't be going back there until around my fiancee's interview. Hopefully prices will remain decent when that time comes up.

You can get flights to LAX from Tucson for under $90 each way with southwest! Infact, last time we went it was $47 each way, but thats coz we have a military discount!

Now decided that we want to fly into Hanoi and just explore a bit of Vietnam and venture on into China a little before heading back to Hanoi for the return flight. We were looking to go in May for 2 - 3 weeks. The cheapest I've found so far is $950 to Hanoi and $889 to SGN.
