  1. The wait is not a good option because the person who would age out is my sister and she doesn't have a petition filed for her yet. I'm not sure they would take a potential applicant into consideration like that. So I'll go see what I can do about getting an interview at another embassy. I already emailed Moscow Embassy to see if they have any recommendations. Do you guys know if there's a DoS or USCIS resource that explains the visa fraud part? I understand that #3 is a bad idea, but I have some relatives who hadn't dealt with immigration in years, and they have this cowboy attitude of "just enter on a tourist visa you'll be fine". It would really help to have an official resource with an explanation of why this is not a good idea. Thanks for the link, I'll definitely check that forum out.
  2. Hello everyone, I filed I-130 for my mom last July. It got processed, sent to NVC, and we submitted DS-260 back in December. On January 6 the status in CEAC changed to "All required applicant documents have been received and approved". We've been expecting that she would eventually get an interview appointment scheduled, but then politics happened and now the US Embassy in Russia can't employ any Russian citizens, so they significantly reduced the services they provide. Now they only process immigration visas in life or death situations. So I'm in a bit of a loss on what to do next. As far as I could gather, our options are: 1. Wait and see what happens. This is a bad option for us since we want to bring my younger sister in after my mom gets her green card. My sister is 17 now and waiting could mean that she would simply age out before my mom could move here and apply for her. 2. Get an immigration visa interview in a different country. I sent a message to DoS through the form online, asking if this is even possible, but haven't received any response yet. I'm not sure who else I could reach out to or is that even an option. 3. My mom still has a valid tourist visa, so we could try to have her fly here and apply for adjustment of status from here. I don't particularly like this option because there's a risk that she will be stopped on the border since she has a pending DS-260, and even if she is allowed to enter the country, we will likely have to start the whole process over, losing time again. I would appreciate if anyone could share their thoughts on this situation, and let me know if you have any good suggestions on what to do here because I'm not sure how to proceed.
  3. Thanks for the clarification. I was thinking of using my certificate to update my name with the SSA because it doesn't look like they are going to reopen soon, so I might have to mail them my documents instead. I know it's not urgent, I just want to get everything done already and stop thinking about all this.
  4. Do you know if my certificate is valid as is? The only definition for replacement being required that I could find so far was "damaged beyond repair". IMO this damage is not beyond repair, since only the edge of the certificate got torn, but I don't want to get into a situation where it turns out I can't use the certificate.
  5. Got my passport earlier this week after almost 3 months wait. Naturalization certificate came in yesterday and unfortunately it sustained minor damage in the mail =/ still not sure what to do about that.

  7. I finally got my passport this week, and they sent my Certificate of Naturalization back in a separate envelope, which was just a regular manila envelope that got all bent in the mail. But the worst part is that whoever was closing that envelope, caught an edge of my certificate in the glue, and as I was opening it, a small piece got torn off from the bottom of the certificate. The damage is not bad, I can probably tape it back on since the tear goes through the words "department of homeland security" on the bottom of the certificate and the rest of it is fine. The question is, should I try to repair it , leave it as is, or should I request a new naturalization certificate? All the important parts of the certificate, by which I mean the parts that contain my name, photo, date of birth, and all the signatures, still look good.

  10. I had to update my name, so I went to the DMV and they changed my status in the system to "citizen". I'm not sure whether you're required to go if you didn't change your name though.
  11. I'm in the same situation. I called SSA and they said that I could mail them the originals, but they recommend to wait until the offices reopen. I updated my name with the DMV and applied for a passport. Hopefully, by the time I get my naturalization certificate back with the passport, SSA will reopen.
  12. Hello everybody, I just got my citizenship and I'm planning on filing I-130 for my mom. I have two questions that are not entirely clear to me from I-130 instructions. 1. My birth certificate shows my mom's maiden name which she's changed several times after I was born. She's got an official document showing the name changes/dates. What are the requirements for the translation? Does she need to get a certified translation of the name change evidence and other documents in Russia or would it be enough for me to translate it and attach it as the evidence. 2. I have a sister who is 16 right now. Does she count as a derivative of my mother or do I need to file a separate petition for her? Or would my mom need to move here, get her green card and file a petition for my sister?
  13. Hey guys, I've got my citizenship on Thursday. The ceremony was scheduled for 8 AM, I got to the USCIS office at 7:30 and ad to wait in my car while the USCIS folks were checking my docs. They showed me my naturalization certificate through the car window to confirm that the info looks right. Then I put on my mask and proceeded to the USCIS garage building where I stood 6 feet apart from 8 other people who were also getting their citizenship. The ceremony was conducted by a federal judge who looked genuinely excited for all of us despite having to wear his robes in a muggy parking garage in 85 degree Florida heat. He started by saying "this usually takes about an hour, but we'll be in an out in 10 minutes". Then he said the oath and we all mumbled agreement through our masks.Everybody took turns for a picture 6 feet away from the judge, then we got our naturalization certificates, then we got our naturalization certificates and that was it. This ceremony was a bit underwhelming, but I'm happy that this journey is over!
  14. I know lol, I was surprised too! I guess Jacksonville office is just nice like that!
