    Here`s how we did it:
    1) apply for an SSN in your maiden name.
    2) get married (we got married before I even had my ssn card in the mail)
    3) now you can open a joint bank account if you wish to do so.
    4) before your I-94 expires, change your last name on your Social security card to your married name. If you`re too late, that`s fine, you can still change it when you have your GC in hand. We were too late so I still haven`t changed that.
    5) in some states, now you can apply for a drivers license. No GC needed. I believe some states require a GC though.
    6) less than 180 days after your I-94 expires, apply for Adjustment of Status (AoS) I-485, this will cost you 1070 dollars.
    7) if you need an EAD, I-765 (Employment Authorization document) do it at the same time you are filing for AoS, send it in one package to get your fee waived
    8) Might as well apply for AP I-131 as well, Advance Parole gives you permission to leave the country even if you don`t have your greencard yet. Even if you don`t have anything planned, it is good to have it on hand in case of a family emergency. File for this, again, in the same package as the AoS, so your fee for AP will get waived.
    Good luck!!!

I-485 has a filing fee of $1070. It's I-131 & I-765 that are free when filed together with the I-485. You should file the I-131 & I-765 WITH your I-485 so in the same packet.

The visa "dies" upon entry in the USA, legal status is dictated by the I-94 (for the 90 days), print a copy of the I-94 out from the CBP website after arrival.
SS card can be applied for any time after arrival up until a couple weeks before the I-94 expires. Doesn't really matter if you get it before or after marriage.
    Get married
    Then start AOS https://www.uscis.gov/i-485
You can apply for the I-765 (authorization to work) at the same time as the I-485 FREE. Usually receive this 2-4 months after filing.
You can file for the I-131 (travel authorization - for outside the USA, more so an emergency card) FREE also.

The reason why many people choose to get the SSN before marriage is because the SSA will be able to see that your fiancee is here based on their maiden name. Many people have had issues after marriage and end up getting the SSN when the EAD comes in and the US government finally has that married name on file.
So the choice is yours, but I suggest SSN in maiden name then change it afterward with the marriage certificate or EAD.
Most states require some sort of legal presence document for a DL or state ID so generally it's best to wait for the EAD. That gives you at least a year before it expires anyhow if your state is one that bases it off of the length of the legal presence document.
File the I-765 and I-131 with the rest of the AOS forms. EAD allows her to work, and get a driver's license, and the AP allows for travel outside of the USA. Lots of people have not gotten AP and later regretted it.

When you get an SSN right away, after marriage you can do a joint bank account, add to health insurance (marriage is a qualifying event), add to car insurance, etc... all things that are great to send with the AOS as evidence of a bona fide relationship.

Hey there, first of all, congratulations!
Just a few things I learned as part of the process that I wanted to share.
    - There might be another cost - medical exam/vaccination sheet filled in by a civil surgeon. It is something we were not initially calculating with, and there was a lot of confusing information about it everywhere on the internet. If your fiance received a full medical exam as part of the K1 procedure, and got all the required vaccines, USCIS should have her records on file, as she will hand them over to the immigration officer at the PoE. If you have a copy of the vaccination sheet from her overseas medical, you can send that with your AoS application. Otherwise, you might need a transcript from a civil surgeon in your area. The cost of it depends on where you live and what the civil surgeon charges, where we live they were insisting on redoing the full medical for 400 dollars. So in the end we sent in our AoS without a vaccination sheet, hoping USCIS will look for the records from my overseas medical and not send an RFE, and it seems to have worked Later on when you are dealing with the AoS forms, this will make more sense.
    - I only applied for SSN after getting married, and got it issued to my married name right away. It seemed more practical this way, and I have not had any issues because of it, just saved us another trip to the SSN office.
    - We were only able to open a joint bank account once I had a DL

staffnurse reacted to Happytobe in I think my friend is falling victim to marriage fraud. Advice?
    Just a few talking points:
    - it can take between 3-6 weeks to marry in Morocco if one is not prepared.
    - the Consulate does not like to see that things have been kept secret from friends and family. If they suspect fraud, they won't approve. (I've been there and done that with my ex, thankfully they denied him)
    - the nicer hotels won't rent one room, typically, without papers.
    - the process takes, as others have said, upwards of 1 year after initial filing. A lot can happeluckiln in 1 year.
    - do fraudsters get through the Consulate? sure, they can't protect everyone all the time; some people are better than others at manipulations
    - do legitimate couples get denied? sure, happens all the time
    - my scammer ex and I met online - luckily, the Consulate smelled something fishy
    - my husband and I met online, and we are happy as can be. My family loves him, and his loves me
    - could he be scamming her? sure. Could he be legit? Sure. She's going to do what makes her happy now. Love does crazy things to people. She's got to experience this herself. The more people that told me my ex was trouble, the more I wanted to prove them wrong. You asked if people get through being scammed.... Yes, we do, but having a friend there who had my back, no matter what, really helped. If things don't work out for her, don't do the whole "I told you so" and if things do work out for her, be happy for her. My husband and I used to Skype everyday, multiple times. We even Skyped with each others families. We really did get to know each other well. Have there been people who got fooled, even with modern day technology? You bet!
I wish her the best, and I hope you can continue to be a good friend for her,
